Reading Critically From The Archives: James Merrill Linn’S Diary As A Gateway To The Past, Carrie M. Pirmann, Courtney Paddick

Faculty Contributions to Books

Archival research and reading from the archives have long been embraced as a scholarly research practice in humanities disciplines. While scholars may spend weeks or months poring over hidden treasures found in archives, undergraduate students are often not exposed to these materials in a hands-on way. However, college and university libraries often have archival collections tucked away that can facilitate learning when used in thoughtfully crafted assignments. In this chapter, we discuss how we used Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and archival materials to provide students with an opportunity to engage in a close and critical reading of excerpts from the …

The Managing Information Services Outcomes (MISO) Survey was originally developed in 2005 at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, USA by staff from a consortium of higher education institutions to assess library and technology services using a single instrument. Since then, the survey has grown and changed under the collaborative management of an all-volunteer team of library and IT professionals from various participating institutions throughout the United States. The survey has been implemented at 171 institutions. This chapter reviews the guiding principles, ongoing partnerships, and the value of working across departments, across campuses, and across cohorts of participating institutions to leverage …

Bridging Communities Of Practice: Cross-Institutional Collaboration For Undergraduate Digital Scholars, Carrie M. Pirmann, R.C. Miessler, Clinton Baugess, Kevin Moore, Courtney Paddick

Faculty Contributions to Books

At Bucknell University and Gettysburg College, an increasing focus on supporting creative undergraduate research as intensive, high-impact experiences has resulted in both institutions implementing library-led digital scholarship fellowships for their students. Gettysburg’s Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship began in 2016, and Bucknell’s Digital Scholarship Summer Research Fellowship in 2017. While academic libraries have emerged as leaders on college campuses for digital humanities (DH) services, the programs at Gettysburg and Bucknell are distinctive in their structured curricula, a focus on independent student research, and the development of a local community of practice. In this chapter, we explore the development of cross-institutional communities …

Write That Down! The Importance Of Internal Documentation During Project Development, Chris Deems Oct 2019

Write That Down! The Importance Of Internal Documentation During Project Development, Chris Deems

Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference

When creativity sparks and the outpouring of ideas begins, information can be lost amongst the initial excitement. Documentation of these sparks can serve as not only a timeline of project development, but also as a knowledge base and roadmap for the future of the project. This lightening talk will focus on the retrospective importance and value of having documented ideas during the development of a new institutional repository at a small private university. Attendees will learn how the documentation was developed, how it was used to create a workshop for the university's liaison librarians, and the important role that consistent …

A Critical Look At The Digital Scholarship Corpus: How Access Influences The Questions We (Can) Ask, Gesina A. Phillips Oct 2018

A Critical Look At The Digital Scholarship Corpus: How Access Influences The Questions We (Can) Ask, Gesina A. Phillips

Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference

Access to research materials is an issue that cuts across disciplines and impacts most researchers as they gather information. For a digital scholar in need of a textual corpus, however, these challenges may be particularly acute. Those studying mid-to-late 20th century works may find themselves in uncertain territory with regard to copyright and licensing. Those studying historically marginalized populations may have trouble finding a pre-compiled corpus, or finding texts at all. Researchers at smaller institutions or in underfunded departments may find that existing datasets are not available to them due to cost, or that they run into copyright and licensing …

Increasing Diversity Representation In An Institutional Repository, Kim Myers, Mary Jo Orzech Oct 2018

Increasing Diversity Representation In An Institutional Repository, Kim Myers, Mary Jo Orzech

Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference

Since its inception six years ago, our institutional repository has provided a number of opportunities to increase campus diversity awareness and representation. Examples begin with use as the registration/schedule platform for our annual Diversity Conference and as a repository for keynotes and other conference sessions. The repository also houses student journals such as 'Dissenting Voices', and we have built online exhibits related to artifacts from other parts of the world (e.g., New Guinea). A new e-book imprint has enabled us to publish books in Spanish and about other times and cultures, e.g., 'Gilgamesh'. The repository has allowed us to look …

And There Was Ds For All: Extending Access Throughout The Library For A Sustainable Service Model, Kimberly D. Hoffman, Eileen Daly-Boas, Kristen Totleben, Emily Sherwood

Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference

In order to create a sustainable service model for Digital Scholarship (DS), River Campus Libraries recognized the need to expand staff expertise and advocacy beyond the Digital Scholarship Lab (DSL). The challenge: Training everyone in a way that is both timely and fiscally responsible. The solution: Leveraging costly, intensive professional development opportunities to re-create a modified peer-to-peer learning experience. By increasing staff access to foundational DS theories, concepts, methodologies, and tools, libraries can foster a community of experts toward advocating for and working collaboratively to facilitate DS projects.

In this interactive workshop, presenters will share benefits resulting from collaborative professional …

Presenting complex data to an audience which is unfamiliar with the intricacies of data acquisition and management is a challenge for many professionals. Education faculty and staff are no different. Staff at Bucknell University library were approached in 2015 by a faculty member from the economics department for assistance with a class on economic history. The syllabus called for the class to analyze and map the development of the 2016 presidential campaign. Through the course of this project data was gathered from multiple sources, including the American Community Survey. Tools such as ArcGIS, R, and the American FactFinder were integrated …
