The Theological Research Exchange Network (TREN) provides a gold-mine of information for theological libraries but has previously made this information primarily available in microfiche format. Librarians and computer personnel at Crown College in Minnesota worked together with TREN to make this information available in full-text electronic format through the library online catalog. This article explains the process so other interested librarians can work with TREN to do the same.
Toward A Code Of Ethics For Cataloging, Sheila A. Bair
Toward A Code Of Ethics For Cataloging, Sheila A. Bair
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Cataloging is the foundation of librarianship, and catalogers are professionals with special skills that set them apart from the profession in general and give them unique ethical responsibilities. They have power to help or harm on an increasingly global scale, yet very little has been written about the ethical issues faced by catalogers. This paper explores the ethics of cataloging, including encoding, subject analysis, authority control, and copy-cataloging, and examines descriptive and normative aspects in view of James Moor’s just-consequentialist theory and J.J. Britz’s ideas on ethical issues relating to intellectual freedom. A code of ethics for cataloging is offered.
Cataloging The Congressional Serial Set, Aimée C. Quinn
Cataloging The Congressional Serial Set, Aimée C. Quinn
Library Scholarship
Many librarians question the usefulness of the traditional cataloging of difficult historic sets in a time when more and more information moves either to the Internet or is digitized outright. One of the most challenging sets to catalog is the United States Congressional Serial Set, a 14,000+ (and growing) mega serial comprised of five monographic sub-series. The Congressional Serial Set is an anomaly since it is both monographic and serial in nature. This article examines the intricacies in cataloging government publications in an electronic atmosphere using one House document in the Serial Set as a guide and examines the two …

Thermal-Transfer Printing: A Better Way To Print Library Labels, Cheryl D. Walters
Thermal-Transfer Printing: A Better Way To Print Library Labels, Cheryl D. Walters
Cheryl D. Walters
Thermal-transfer printing, a technology borrowed from the manufacturing sector, offers libraries a flexible method for printing durable, accurate, legible, and attractive labels that reliably adhere to most book surfaces. When guided by an electronic program customized to meet a library’s particular needs, a thermal-transfer printing system offers virtually limitless variations in font, format, and functionality. It can print labels directly from the online catalog, thereby guaranteeing that call numbers on labels match what patrons see in the catalog. This article explains thermal-transfer printing and how it compares with other printing technologies, briefly explores applications in both the manufacturing and library …

On Good Authority: Naco Participation At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Kathleen L. Wells
The Southeastern Librarian
The prospect of contributing to an authority file used by libraries throughout the United States and beyond may be somewhat daunting in itself. However, participation in the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) may be within your library’s reach. Since joining the program in November 2001, catalogers at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Libraries have found that many rewards and few drawbacks come with NACO membership.

The Subcommittee on Authority Tools designed this list to bring together, in one place, descriptions of information sources that are useful when developing authorized headings to support audiovisual and music catalog records. Work began on this project in 1999, and the list was released in 2001. It became a historical OLAC document in 2020. Please note that links in this document were active in 2001 and may no longer exist currently.

Catalog Design, Catalog Maintenance, Catalog Governance, Mary K. Bolin
Catalog Design, Catalog Maintenance, Catalog Governance, Mary K. Bolin
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
The design of library catalogs and the maintenance of their contents equals catalog governance, that is, professional responsibility for the catalog. The design of library catalogs and their contents are an example of the standards that are the hallmark of modern librarianship. Although design and maintenance standards have always had an array of participants, in recent years the participants in catalog design and maintenance have become more numerous and varied, and therefore its governance has become more diffuse. Although the card catalog had a standard form in which design and maintenance were linked, that is not true of today’s OPAC …

Bliss: The Man And The Classification, John A. Drobnicki
Publications and Research
This paper discusses the career of Henry Evelyn Bliss, founder of the Bibliographic Classification, which is currently being revised. Dissatisfied with the current classification systems, Bliss devised his own, which was based on a main class order that provided for collocation of related classes. Although not currently used in the United States, the Bibliographic Classification continues to be utilized by approximately 50 libraries in the United Kingdom. Advantages and criticisms are presented for Bliss's system, which is often praised in library science textbooks, yet seldom used as the trend in libraries has been to either the Dewey Decimal or the …

Cataloging Medieval And Renaissance Manuscripts: A Review Article, Richard W. Clement
Cataloging Medieval And Renaissance Manuscripts: A Review Article, Richard W. Clement
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Until recently it could have been argued with much justification that the cataloging of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the United States began and ended with Seymour De Ricci's Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States and Canada (New York: H. W. Wilson, 1935-40) and Supplement (New York: Bibliographical Society of America, 1962). Of course, many excellent catalogs were produced before the Census and have been produced since (although most are of a specialized nature), yet the Census and its Supplement must be regarded as the one great landmark in cataloging in this country. It was the …

Cataloging Of Audio-Visual Equipment, Tanna Murry
Honors Theses
For my Honors Special Study, I decided to catalog the audio-visual equipment that belongs to the Educational Department. I feel this project was a benefit not only to me but also to the Department. While I gained some much needed experience in cataloging equipment, the Educational department gained two complete records of its audio-visual equipment--one for the Media Lab and one for the Curriculum Lab. The cards contain the serial numbers of the audio-visual equipment to serve as a means of identification. Also both instructors and students of education will now be able to tell at a glance what equipment …

"Laboratory Work" In Library Science, Marty Rayfield
"Laboratory Work" In Library Science, Marty Rayfield
Honors Theses
This special studies was the practical application (in a "laboratory") of what has been learned in several library science courses. The laboratory consisted of shelf after shelf of unclassified books arranged in no order and covering fields from physical education to American literature. The collection had to be evaluated, generally organized, classified, lettered and reshelved. Later, author, title, and shelf-list cards will be made. From a hodge-podge of books with limited value because of lack of organization, this collection has become a useful library. No longer will one have to search for a book through every shelf only to find …
