John Milton & Seventeenth Century Culture, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

This catalog outlined the exhibit that included twenty-three 17th-century Milton editions, most notably the first editions of Milton’s first prose work (1641), of his great defense of a free press Areopagitica (1644), of his first collection of poetry (1645), and of several political works of the 1650s. The exhibit included all four editions of Paradise Lost published during Milton’s lifetime. Complementing the books on display were engravings of English and Italian cities where Milton lived, studied and visited.

This brochure describes a Department of Rare Books & Special Collections exhibit of collection materials about camellias. The collection was formed by Mrs. Sheffield Phelps (Claudia Lea). The Phelps Memorial Collection of Garden Books was donated to the University by Miss Phelps in 1959 on her mother’s death, with additional donations in the 1970s after the dispersal of the Phelps home. The exhibition tells the story of how camellias were brought in the early 1700s from the Far East to Europe, and then to America, how they were identified and named, and how the major varieties were developed by 19th-century …

This brochure accompanied an exhibit mounted to mark the donation to the University of South Carolina by the People’s Republic of China of an extensive collection of Chinese-language books and reference works, totaling more than 200 volumes. Most of the books displayed were drawn from the library of the original South Carolina College, chartered in 1801. Also displayed were books about China from the personal library of Charles Pinckney (1757-1827), governor of South Carolina, and author of the “Pinckney draft” of the U.S. federal constitution.

This catalog accompanied the exhibit of writings by and about the Scottish poet James Macpherson. In addition to its outstanding holdings of Robert Burns and Burnsiana, the Library's G. This exhibit provides a good opportunity to showcase the Roy Collection's extraordinary depth of material on a once widely-influential writer who deserves renewed critical attention. The Augusta Baker Collection of African-American Children's Literature and Folklore totals over 1600 volumes that highlight a wide range of subjects, genres, and formats of multicultural books for children, together with papers and illustrative material reflecting Baker's pivotal role in the field of children's librarianship. The collection is strong in reflecting the changes in subject matter of children's literature during the late twentieth century, as racial and ethnic folktales and legends were told and retold in numerous illustrated editions for new audiences. Latino/Latina materials, Native American, and Asian American literature and folktales for young people are well-represented.

This catalog accompanied the exhibit of portions of a gift of Ford material recently made to the University. Paul Leicester Ford (1865-1902) was the consummate bookman of the late nineteenth century. During his life, he successfully contributed to the world of letters through printing, bibliography, editing, scholarship and fiction. The collection contains almost forty books and pamphlets pertaining to Ford, including inscriptions, photos, and letters, as well as additional material by Noah Webster, Ford's great-grandfather, and other family members.

The exhibit accompanied by this catalog was mounted to display books belonging to Angelica Singleton Van Buren (1816-1877) which were recently donated to the University. Mrs. Van Buren, the South Carolina-born daughter-in-law of President Martin Van Buren, lived with her husband in the White House during the latter part of Van Buren's term and served as Van Buren's hostess during this time. The books displayed are among a larger group of books from the Barnwell and Singleton families, all of which were donated by Mr. and Mrs. David Phillips of Florence, SC.

This catalog accompanied the 1996 University Libraries’ exhibition of material related to Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century British Women Writers. The exhibition covers a full chronological spectrum, and many of the "collector’s high points" of literature by women are displayed, including first editions of Wollstonecraft’s Vindication, Shelley’s Frankenstein, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, and Rossetti’s Goblin Market, as well as first editions by Austen, Charlotte and Anne Bronte, George Eliot and other well-known names.

This exhibition contained works by and about Robert Burns, and showed selected highlights from the G. Ross Roy Collection of Burns, Burnsiana and Scottish Poetry. The collection, acquired from USC Professor Roy in 1989, is widely recognized as among the best Burns collections anywhere in North America. The items chosen for the University's Robert Burns bicentenary exhibit have been selected from over 4,000 items in the Roy Collection on Burns alone. This exhibit marks the bicentenary of the Victorian writer Thomas Carlyle and showcases the University of South Carolina's outstanding collection of Carlyle's works, formed by Professor Rodger L. Tarr. Along with a full array of first and collected editions, nearly all in original bindings, the Tarr collection also includes important manuscript and illustrative material. This exhibition, James Dickey at 70: A Tribute, was mounted by the University of South Carolina Libraries' Division of Special Collections in recognition of James Dickey's seventieth birthday, of his 25 years at the University, and of the publication of his third novel, To the White Sea, and was an aspect of the larger September 1993 celebration. The exhibition was designed to complement the celebration's activities and to provide a sense of the development of the artist's oeuvre and contained examples of Dickey's fiction, poetry, essays and interviews, and children's books.

With the addition in 1989 of the G. Ross Roy Collection, the University of South Carolina's Thomas Cooper Library became a major international center for research across the broad range of Scottish literature. The core of the Roy Collection is (in the words of a recent visitor) "the best Burns collection in North America." Around that core are holdings in depth for many other major (and minor) Scottish writers, from the Renaissance to the present day, supported by the resources of a nationally-ranked research library.

This serves as the catalogue to "John James Audubon and the South Carolina Connection," a commemorative exhibit at the University of South Carolina on the 200th anniversary of Audubon's birth. The exhibit, November 15, 1985 - January 26, 1986, co-sponsored by the McKissick Museum and the Thomas Cooper Library, emphasizes the work which Audubon did in South Carolina. Equally honored is the role played by South Carolinians in helping Audubon complete his ambitious project of drawing all the birds in America in life size.

In some ways, this catalog will supplement Jacob Blank’s Bibliography of American Literature , III, 262-269, but in no sense is it mean to serve as a complete bibliography of Fuller’s writings; rather, it is a group of significant items, including many unrecorded by the BAL, from the curator’s own collection-in-progress.
