Undergraduate biology students at St. John Fisher College have several opportunities to engage with the concept of Scholarly Publishing and consequently three different frames from the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education; Information Creation as a Process, Information Has Value, and Scholarship as Conversation. This is accomplished at three different points in the biology undergraduate curriculum. First, all students enrolled in general biology complete an exercise on open access, article processing charges, submission styles and other author instructions for several different publications. At Le Moyne College, Information Literacy (IL) is one of the learning goals for the Department of Biological Sciences. This presentation will discuss how the Science Librarian worked with Biology faculty to identify five measurable learning outcomes that meet Biology’s broader IL learning goal. Additionally, I will discuss the collaboration with faculty to scaffold the teaching approach for these five learning outcomes. The presentation will conclude with a description of how the Biology department and Science Librarian assess student's progress towards meeting these five learning outcomes.

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger

The focus of this presentation is to report findings from growing partnerships between faculty whose primary focus is classroom teaching and faculty librarians, revealing connections between our disciplines and co-designing curricula that recognize the commonalities in pedagogy, theories, and professional practice. Information literacy and scholarly communication are combined in teaching and learning lessons, materials, and shared terminology. The presenter will encourage participants to reflect on why and how librarians invite students into the disciplines and to investigate ways of assessing student learning.

Social media can be an effective tool in promoting critical thinking and collaboration in library instruction. Whether it is simple polls or a much more collaborative event, these methods engage students and allow them to interact with material, professors, and other students in an organized fashion that might not be feasible without the use of technology. Albertsons Library has successfully leveraged the use mobile devices for helping students learn research skills. Librarians are now going to classrooms and teaching two instruction sessions — 1) finding information and 2) evaluating information. The library sessions provide hands-on, active learning opportunities for student teams, built around the use of iPads to explore library resources. In fall 2012, this included instruction to seventy-four classes in Boise State's "University Foundations 100" course, the first course in our general education program. Ten classes of junior level transfer students received an additional session — 3) advanced searching techniques. The instruction curriculum is purposefully …

Most research instruction sessions do very little in the way of inspiring creativity among students. The great majority of these sessions engage students only at the lower levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy (Remembering and Understanding). This often occurs by necessity- someone has to teach students research basics before they can ever hope to use research as part of a creative process.
