An Examination Of Research Data Sharing And Re-Use: Implications For Data Citation Practice, Hyoungjoo Park, Dietmar Wolfram
School of Information Studies Faculty Articles
This study examines characteristics of data sharing and data re-use in Genetics and Heredity, where data citation is most common. This study applies an exploratory method because data citation is a relatively new area. The Data Citation Index (DCI) on the Web of Science was selected because DCI provides a single access point to over 500 data repositories worldwide and to over two million data studies and datasets across multiple disciplines and monitors quality research data through a peer review process. We explore data citations for Genetics and Heredity, as a case study by examining formal citations recorded in the …

University Of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries Archives And Special Collections Organizational Analysis, Carol Pitts Diedrichs
UNL Libraries: White Papers
Libraries everywhere are undergoing tremendous transformation in staffing, services, and collections. Archives and special collections are growing in importance and are moving quickly from the perimeter to the center of library activities and services. The University of Nebraska Lincoln Libraries invited me to conduct and facilitate a 1.5 day workshop/retreat on trends and strategic goals/initiatives for archives and special collections including review of the current organizational structure, staffing and services. The workshop/retreat focused on the following goals:
To hone strategic goals for UNL Archives and Special Collections over the next 3-5 years including evaluation of related staffing needs;
To identify …

Data Curation And The Arts: How Do Musicians Curate Their Data?, Amy S. Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Professional musicians were surveyed to determine how personal, amateur recordings of performances are shared with students and colleagues. Sharing files on social media is common, with Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo used most frequently. Although these are popular social media platforms, they do not have enhanced format support and robust metadata. Additionally, licensing terms for each platform differ, and may be not in the best interest of the musician. Although recordings are not traditionally considered data, data curation principles can be applied to these types of files, and the library is positioned to become an active participant in this process.

This is my capstone project for completion of a Post MA certificate in Historic Preservation and Regionalism. I received the degree in Spring, 2019. The project involves recovering the legacy of a historic colonial church site in Belén, New Mexico. The work involves the descendant community’s sense of place and the continuity of memory and sacredness of Belen’s first church and original plaza.

The library-press relationship explored in P2L allows for transformative approaches in support and dissemination of scholarship. Effective exploitation of these partnerships is in the early stages and there is an opportunity to influence the outcomes to ensure they are as broadly applicable and scalable as possible. As Cliff Lynch (CNI) noted in his summary of the day’s conversation, we must do more exploration of both intra-institutional (library and press) and cross-institutional collaborations. He provided several compelling suggestions for partnerships, including new ways to promote and leverage library special collections as well as ideas for increasing discoverability of press content. (See …

This report is a response to the following charge from project sponsor DeeAnn Allison: Develop a working definition of the purpose and scope for a discovery tool that includes a description of what it should accomplish. How will it help scholars connect with information? The charge included a request to answer seven questions:
1. What content should be included and why?
2. What functions or search capabilities should be included?
3. What social media enhancements should be included?
4. How can it be structured to help both novice and advanced researchers?
5. Can you identify a “perfect” tool? If not, …

Building relationships between university libraries The umbrella affiliation agreement between the University of Vermont and PUCP, in effect since 2010, initially focused on the subject areas of biomedical technology and instrumentation. However, as relationships on the two campuses were built and strengthened, other collaborative opportunities beyond the original focus emerged, including with Engineering, Public Administration, and the Libraries. Kathia Hanza, director of PUCP Libraries, expressed interest in facilitating our return in March 2016, to focus on development of library research guides as a mechanism to present library resources in contextually meaningful ways. When we did return in March, it was …
The Future Of Web Citation Practices, Robin Camille Davis
The Future Of Web Citation Practices, Robin Camille Davis
Publications and Research
Citing webpages has been a common practice in scholarly publications for nearly two decades as the Web evolved into a major information source. But over the years, more and more bibliographies have suffered from “reference rot”: cited URLs are broken links or point to a page that no longer contains the content the author originally cited. In this column, I look at several studies showing how reference rot has affected different academic disciplines. I also examine citation styles’ approach to citing web sources. I then turn to emerging web citation practices: Perma, a “freemium” web archiving service specifically for citation; …

What opportunities do digital technologies present scholars? How do developments in digital media support scholarship and teaching, and how can academics apply them to further social justice activism? The authors, a sociologist and a librarian, examine scholarly practice in the digital era to explore how academics, journalists, and activists can combine efforts to support social justice issues. With scholarly communication undergoing rapid change, and with digital innovation applied in higher education for many reasons, authors outline what scholars can do to channel their work to benefit the public good.

What do smaller academic institutions need to know about institutional repositories and open access? Student and faculty authors enjoy many benefits from making their work open, and the hosting institution receives international visibility. A repository can be a DIY publishing platform. Learn how Gettysburg College got started and hear about the wide range of materials that are being shared. Gettysburg’s repository, The Cupola, currently includes over 5,000 works that have been downloaded 420,000 times... and counting.

Archives in Action: What Kind of Animal is It
The opportunities to strengthen our relevance and center our value to our campus communities has never been stronger. The rise of digital publishing and scholarly communication as issues in academic librarianship and university life are both lively and multifaceted. There are many faculty and students on our campuses who are publishing in the digital environment, either through the mechanisms of traditional peer-reviewed journals, web publication, and even paper and ink. These university publications, until recently, have existed in most part as fragmented and disconnected coalitions, but with the rise of digital …

Small But Mighty: Launching A Successful Scholarly Communications Initiative With Limited Resources, Michael Pujals
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Many small schools worry that they don’t have the resources to launch and run a successful institutional repository initiative. It might come as a surprise that their very smallness comes with sizable advantages. At Dominican University of California, Michael Pujals, Scholarly Communications Librarian, has identified and successfully drawn on these advantages to build a thriving initiative in a short amount of time, including offering services for conference and journal hosting, thesis and capstone publication, and individual scholar pages for faculty members.
