Data narratives or data stories have emerged as a new form of the scholarly communication focused on data. In this paper, we explore the potential value of data narratives and the requirements for data stories to enhance scholarly communication. We examine three types of data stories that form a continuum from the less to the more structured: the DataONE data stories, the Data Curation Profiles, and the Data Descriptors from the journal Scientific Data. Over the past few years, an increasing number of academic libraries have been adding or supplementing research data management support and services to their offerings. In an effort to support different stakeholders (e.g. students, library faculty and librarians, and disciplinary faculty), Purdue Libraries faculty and staff have developed several different tools and resources specifically designed for librarians and liaisons in supporting research data management. As more researchers look to publish and cite research data, it will be important to link the published data sets to the corresponding articles and technical reports. This lightening talk will discuss the developing collaborations between the Purdue University Libraries, including the Purdue University Press, and the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP), a collaboration between Purdue University and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Since 2006, the Libraries has been working with JTRP researchers in the production, dissemination, and stewardship of technical reports.
