In an effort to address ever-shifting staffing levels and evolving service demands, staff in the Research & Instructional Services department of The D.B. Weldon Library at Western University developed and implemented a new and strategic approach to structuring their work. The ‘Portfolio Model’ provides a framework for organizing the primary functions of the department - collections, instruction and reference - while at the same time preserving liaison at its core. New academic librarian takes on formal classroom role, as adjunct assistant professor, due to shortage of library education faculty in a library media program. Describes development of an undergraduate children’s literature course. Discusses incorporation of web course software, online readings, and evaluative assignments for undergraduates. Gives examples of pitfalls and successes in developing and teaching a course at the college level for the first time. Offers perspective of the librarian in the formal classroom.
