The ecology metaphor is drawn from the biological sciences and refers to the “scientific study of the distribution, abundance and dynamics of organisms, their interactions with other organisms and with their physical environment” (British Ecological Society, 2016). In recent decades, the metaphor has become useful for tackling the complexity of new information and learning environments, particularly as driven by the increasing quantity of information, the growing number of available media and means of communicating, the extended reach of information technologies, and the new practices arising from these configurations. Beyond The One Shot: Creating A Course For Sustained Adult Learning, Makiba Foster, Kristine Helbling

Avoiding the one-shot instruction standard was the goal when targeting adult learners in our university’s evening degree program. We crafted a semester-long course to help returning adult learners navigate academic research. Attendees learned how we designed our course based in adult learning theory. We also discussed our strategy for persuading reluctant administrators on the importance of information literacy courses. This presentation also included feedback from students regarding their newly gained skills.

The role of school librarians is often overlooked in advancing a respect for cultural diversity among youth, yet librarians are in key positions to champion for social justice reform in educational settings. In this qualitative study, we examine preservice school librarians' experiences with booktalking multicultural literature in a mixed reality simulation environment, as a vehicle to introduce social justice issues. Our purpose was to explore the booktalking experience as a means of developing preservice librarians' understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy, a stance concerned with developing cultural competence and critical consciousness. According to a 2013 survey, about 40% of college students have used tablets for coursework and two-thirds have used a smartphone. Students also report that they would like to use their mobile devices more often in their courses. This session will provide the opportunity to learn about strategies for incorporating the use of mobile devices in the classroom, including WU-texter, an application developed and implemented by Ron in a computer science course.

Seeing The Clouds: Teacher Librarian As Broker In Collaborative Planning With Teachers, Sue Kimmel

Teachers engaged in sustained collaboration with a teacher librarian were interviewed about the meaning of that collaboration. The findings suggest that the teachers recognized important contributions of the librarian to instructional planning and classroom instruction including knowledge, legwork, and support. In particular, they understood her role as a broker both to resources and to ideas for using those resources in instruction. While these resources were essential, they were not sufficient; they required a knowledgeable peer who also understood their application to the curriculum and what students were expected to learn. They required a librarian.

Library patrons are adopting mobile devices for personal and other uses. The ubiquity of mobile devices will lead to changes in how and where learning and education happens. Libraries have wanted to become ubiquitous by making resources and services available anywhere, anytime. Reference librarians can use mobile devices and applications to include services in mobile learning environments. Challenges to libraries include uncertainty about which technologies to adopt in a rapidly changing technology landscape, the cost of technology adoption, staffing for 24–7 facilities, diversity of needs and preferences among library patrons, and the need to offer stable, consistent services. The article discusses the need for active learning in library instruction classes that have Millenial or Generation Y students who have short attention spans and prefer education in entertaining forms. To promote learning, such students reportedly have to be actively engaged with the material for them to do worthwhile research. It is stated that one teacher divided her class into small groups and let the students become the leaders, while she took the role of a student, which allowed her to raise points to direct the flow of the instruction.

The Mortola Library and Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology are working together on a joint pilot project utilizing the technology of interactive white boards (IWBs, also known by the brand name SMART Board). The mobile IWB serves three purposes: improve faculty development and increase integration of Web 2.0 tools into faculty development sessions, improvement of Information Literacy instruction sessions, and increase availability of new technologies for members of the Pace Community, students in particular, to use within the library.

Some students immediately feel at home in today's technology-saturated library, but many others have difficulty navigating the myriad of electronic sources in most academic libraries. It is estimated that as many as one-third of the college students in the United States suffer from technophobia and are anxious about using computers. In addition to coping with computer technology, many first-year college students are intimidated by the size and complexity of academic libraries (Mellon 1986). In short, just when students most need to become competent users of information technology, anxieties can cause them to avoid the library altogether (Warmkessel 1992).
