Maintaining a clinical HIV/AIDS section in an academic library collection that is both current and historically significant for research is essential. This paper reports on a collection management project that was undertaken to weed HIV/AIDS books in targeted clinical areas of an academic library using a timeline model developed by Ondrusek (2001) as a supplement to traditional weeding methods. The combination proved effective for identifying clinical materials that were outdated and needed to be deaccessioned while maintaining historically-relevant materials in these areas.

This webinar is the first session of a 2-part series intended to familiarize attendees with the practical applications of standards and best practices for collection management in an increasingly electronic world. Jointly developed by librarians, system providers, publishers, and other community members, standards and best practices help "grease the wheels" to ensure better interoperability between systems and automate some tedious tasks. Presenters introduce particular standards and describe how they work and their utility in helping libraries manage local and shared collections.

Reducing user frustration over the failure to find a book in the library catalog, eliminating missing titles, and cleaning up other common database errors are tasks facing all libraries. Recently, the staff at Southern Polytechnic State University undertook a collection inventory using Palm Pilot technology. This article describes the one-year project and provides a detailed discussion of the procedures and equipment required to undertake this task.
