To examine how academic law libraries can respond to the call for more practice-oriented legal education, the authors compared trends in collection management decisions regarding secondary sources at academic and law firm libraries. The results of their survey are followed by recommendations about how academic and firm librarians can work together to best provide law students with materials they will need in practice.

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at the University of Dayton Libraries began using Archive-It to capture websites relevant to their collecting policies in 2015. However, the collections were only made available to users from the University of Dayton page on the Archive-It website. Content was isolated in a separate platform and was not promoted to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the web archive collections into the Libraries’ EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) discovery layer. In 2016, the speakers embarked upon a multi-institutional project to compare print and e-book usage across four Southern California institutions (Claremont Colleges Library, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, and University of Southern California). The preliminary results of this comparative usage analysis, presented as a poster session at the Charleston Conference, revealed that print books in certain art and architecture classes and subclasses are used over e-books, suggesting “leanings” in format preferences of users.

In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

Recent studies have shown that despite possible preconceptions, e-books in art and architecture subject areas are actually quite well used. By collaborating across four SCELC-affiliated Southern California institutions (Claremont Colleges Library, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, and the University of Southern California), we engaged in extensive usage analyses to understand more about what might motivate art and architecture researchers to seek out e-books, and compare that usage to print books.

Liaison work is a secondary role for most of the librarians at the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University, and although each librarian takes this responsibility seriously, the task of ordering books is often one that gets put off throughout the busy Fall semester. Lengthy descriptions of research databases can unintentionally cause extraneous cognitive load at a moment when a student researcher is already taxed. Furthermore, publisher descriptions of databases often don’t conform to students’ mental models. To address this problem, librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) combined data from established LibGuides best practices and student vocabulary mined from chat reference transcripts to design a new formula for database descriptions in LibGuides.

Recognizing that online users naturally “skim” websites, the new descriptions are broken down into shorter chunks of information with separate headings for “subjects,” “description,” and “contents.” The subjects are based on the …

The University of the Pacific started an institutional repository, Scholarly Commons, at the end of 2016. Prior to this, theses/dissertations (T/Ds) had been submitted to ProQuest starting in 1960 and prior to that the University collected print copies in the Library starting in 1912. The print collection of T/Ds at Pacific was 3,188 in December 2016.

The goals starting in 2017 were as follows

  1. Duplicate all current ProQuest ETDs in to the IR with restricted access
  2. Set up the ProQuest submission form moving forwards to gain permission from students to upload to the IR

The paper will address two issues present in digital newspaper collections, namely that of long-term storage and access solutions specific to this medium, and takedown requests. The paper will outline the storage and hosting solution in place at Kent State University (KSU) of the student newspaper. The current digital archive contains ninety years of the printed newspaper (1926-2016), both reflecting both digitized and born-digital content. The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of August 2017, 161 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. Many metadata providers are institutional repositories utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform whose metadata is harvested through the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol for repository interoperability. The Caufield & Shook Collection remains a significant primary source for local history and a prime candidate for digitization. Unfortunately, on its receipt non-archivists processed the collection with little documentation of original order or organizational decision making. Additionally, workflow choices were determined largely by the desire to maximize student labor. What happens when library policies and philosophies of the past run counter to user desires of the present?

At Western University (Ontario, Canada) we have an official collections policy to avoid collecting textbooks, as they fall outside of the carefully librarian-driven, research-heavy philosophies that drive our acquisitions process. However, in every survey to students and faculty, we find requests for textbooks on reserve and praise for the books we already have.

Operating from three distinct but interlocking perspectives, this session will cover the lived experiences of three librarians (Black woman archivist, a White woman anti-racist public librarian, and a Black woman academic librarian) navigating collection development and collection development policies in a profession that is 85.2% White. This program will also provide strategies for accomplices and white librarians to support their colleagues and implement anti-racist collection development strategies at their institutions.
