Maine Shared Collections Strategy Advisory Board Update Report, May 2014, Deborah Rollins, Clem Guthro, Barbara Mcdade, Matthew Revitt

Matthew I Revitt

Under this three-year project, funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), libraries will collaborate to make decisions about the storage, retention, and preservation of print materials (both books and journals) as well as look for ways to integrate digital editions into a state-wide catalog. This will help alleviate space concerns while ensuring that users continue to have equal or greater access to the information. The project’s goals are: To develop a strategy for a statewide, multi-type library program for managing, storing and preserving print collections among public and private institutions to achieve greater efficiencies and …

Robots In The Library: Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems, Lowell Walters, Thomas Fesmire, Gregory Smith

Gregory A. Smith

While ASRS (automated storage and retrieval system) installations in libraries are not new, Liberty University’s was distinctive on several fronts: The ASRS vendor had no previous experience in libraries; the library aggressively chose to store some 70% of its main library collection in the ASRS; bins with books were preloaded as construction progressed, allowing for rapid ingestion into the ASRS and subsequent launch of regular retrieval; and the ASRS is a technological showpiece of the new library building. The speakers look at the planning, collection analysis, software development, loading and ingestion, and ILS management.

By examining the current standards and future possibilities that govern these particular libraries, this article seeks to assist acquisitions librarians within these libraries with a way to examine, maintain, and purchase a collection that will take their library forward, prove their value and worth, and stay within their constantly dwindling budgets while remaining true to the library's core mission and obligation of providing services and support to the law …

Aggregated Interdisciplinary Databases And The Needs Of Undergraduate Researchers, Barbara Fister, Amy Fry, Julie Gilbert Oct 2013

Aggregated Interdisciplinary Databases And The Needs Of Undergraduate Researchers, Barbara Fister, Amy Fry, Julie Gilbert

Amy Fry

After seeing growing frustration among inexperienced undergraduate researchers searching a popular aggregated interdisciplinary database, the authors questioned whether the leading interdisciplinary databases are serving undergraduates' needs. As a preliminary exploration of this question, the authors queried vendors, analyzed their marketing materials, surveyed librarians and students, and examined what titles were being downloaded at 14 liberal arts institutions. Although librarians are satisfied with these databases, and vendors intend to continue the trend of adding more content, actual usage patterns suggest that these databases are not serving the purpose one might expect. Librarians should learn more about user experiences in order to …

Distinctive Collections: The Space Between “General” And “Special” Collections And Implications For Collection Development, Daniel Dollar, Gregory Eow, Julie Linden, Melissa Grafe Dec 2011

Distinctive Collections: The Space Between “General” And “Special” Collections And Implications For Collection Development, Daniel Dollar, Gregory Eow, Julie Linden, Melissa Grafe

Julie Linden

Many libraries separate collection development activities into two broad categories, that of “general” collections versus “special” collections. Although this makes for a clean distinction between two areas of library activity (roughly the work of librarians as distinct and separate from that of archivists), in between these two poles lie “distinctive collections”—items that are neither especially rare nor unique (special), but are also not run-of-the-mill monographs or journals. Government documents, numeric datasets, ephemera, area collections, audiovisual media, born-digital materials—these are all recognized subsets of library collections with their own frameworks (more or less developed) for acquisition, cataloging/metadata, preservation, inter-institutional collaboration. Falling …

Digital Preservation In Action: Toward A Campus-Wide Program, Richard Fyffe, Deborah M. Ludwig, Beth F. Warner

Deborah M. Ludwig

This research bulletin is a companion to ECAR bulletin #18, 2005, "Digital Preservation: A Campus-Wide Perspective" by the same authors. The earlier bulletin outlined the stewardship responsibilities of the academy with respect to administrative and scholarly content. This bulletin explores a proposed model for establishing a digital preservation program in colleges and universities—requirements for educating the institutional community, developing roles and policies, and establishing an integrated technical architecture to support the complete life cycle of digital information. The model was developed at the University of Kansas.
