Standing Strong: A History Of The Bowling Green Public Library, Jonathan Jeffrey

Standing Strong is the heroic story of ordinary citizens who believed in and worked for extraordinary results. The Bowling Green Public Library (now Warren County Public Library) began as a Works Progress Administration project in 1938 through the effort of local women who believed the city’s children and adults needed free library service. When these funds were no longer available, the library subsisted for several years on a $50 per month appropriation form the city. To create tax-based funding for the cash strapped organization, the City Commission created the Bowling Green Public Library by municipal order on October 2, 1953. …

When the Department of Special Collections at the Syracuse University Library acquired the papers of Werner Seligmann, an architect and former Dean of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the opportunity presented itself to develop a model storage system that could be applied to the other architectural drawings in the Department. While not large in comparison to these other collections, the Seligmann Papers were sizable enough to give us a better understanding of the storage issues involved if we decided to undertake the task of re-housing our other drawings. In the 1830s, at the dawn of mass-market publishing, J. & J. Harper of New York began publishing several libraries, including Harper’s Family Library and Harper’s School District Library. A “library” in this sense is a series or set of uniformly bound and uniformly priced books issued by the same publisher. A leading publisher and a major force in the broad religious and social reform movements of the period, the Harper brothers helped to shape education in American homes and schools. As Methodists they were advocates of reading for moral improvement. As innovative publishers, they made full use of the …

Librarian stereotypes are akin to those of gays and lesbians. Librarians battling negative professional images are in common cause with gays and lesbians battling similarly slanderous representations. This article proposes relationships between these varieties of maligned people and professionals.
