An Anniversary Opportunity: Digitization Of Student Yearbooks, James Lowrey, Matt Blessing

Library Faculty Research and Publications

Anniversary celebrations provide archivists and librarians with many unique opportunities to build public support for their programs. Archivists, in particular, are expected to be a resource for such events. Handled adroitly, anniversary programming can offset the “dusty shelf” stereotype that frustrates many professionals. Moreover, resource allocators planning an anniversary are likely to look to their archives for ideas and special projects, initiatives that may result in additional financial and staffing resources. Describing the positive public relations value of anniversaries, archivist Tim Ericson has gone so far as to suggest “The Archivist's First Law of Outreach”:

Human beings are unable to …

Archivists And The Usa Patriot Act: Are We Prepared?, Michele Christian

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

On October 26, 2001, only six weeks after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, President George W. Bush signed into law the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (USA PATRIOT Act). The quick response was prompted by a perceived need to provide government officials with the tools they believed were necessary to fight terrorism. With little debate, the Senate and the House of Representatives resoundingly voted in favor of the Act. The reauthorization of the USA PATRIOT Act would not come as quickly. Several sections …

Embracing The Power Of Archives, Randall C. Jimerson Western Washington University

In my dream I am entering a temple. Its ornate facade and tall spires give me hope. I will find enlightenment here. I push open the massive door and enter. The door clangs shut behind me. I am in a dimly lit room with high windows that prevent the sunlight from reaching me. Despite the heat outside it is cool here. A security guard approaches. The temple has become a prison. The guard tells me to surrender my pens and put my briefcase in a locker. I sit at a table. Guards and security cameras watch me constantly to prevent …

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Outreach programs are meant to expand archival audiences beyond “traditional” users. In her 1978 article, “Education Programs: Outreach as an Administrative Function,” Elsie Freeman Freivogel argues that the archivist’s first job “is to recognize that we have many publics . . . that include, among others, teachers at all levels of the educational system; elementary, secondary school, college and university students; genealogists, avocational historians, government employees, publicists, media professionals, and the merely curious.” Because Web-based and digital projects address “many publics” in relevant and familiar ways, they are easily integrated into archival outreach activities. Although user groups have not changed …

When Not All Papers Are Paper: A Case Study In Digital Archivy, Catherine Stollar Peters Jan 2006

When Not All Papers Are Paper: A Case Study In Digital Archivy, Catherine Stollar Peters

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Hypertext poet Deena Larsen is worried about the potential loss of her digital poetry, but she has a plan to save it. In a 2004 article, “The Uncertain Fate of Scholarly Artifacts in a Digital Age,” Larsen revealed her plans for preserving her hypertext work Marble Springs. “Ms. Larsen started collecting old Macintosh computers so people will always be able to read Marble Springsin its original format. She has 100 computers in her two-bedroom apartment.” Although Larsen’s two-bedroom mausoleum of circa 1990s technology is one strategy for saving born-digital hypertext works, it is probably not the best. An …

The Provincial Archive As A Place Of Memory: Confronting Oral And Written Sources On The Role Of Former Slaves In The Cuban War Of Independence (1895-98), Rebecca J. Scott Jan 2006

The Provincial Archive As A Place Of Memory: Confronting Oral And Written Sources On The Role Of Former Slaves In The Cuban War Of Independence (1895-98), Rebecca J. Scott

Book Chapters

Few questions of historical interpretation are more passionately debated than those that have become intertwined with a national narrative and with the definition of how a country came to be what it is imagined to be. For the island nation of Cuba, political independence was forged in a lengthy series of wars against Spanish colonial rule, ending in a direct encounter with U.S. expansionism. Those wars began in 1868 and concluded in 1898 with the departure of Spanish troops, followed by a military occupation of the island by U.S. forces. In 1902 the arst Cuban republic emerged, but it was …

Evidence Of Sanctity: Record-Keeping And Canonization At The Turn Of The 13th Century, Michelle Light Jan 2006

Evidence Of Sanctity: Record-Keeping And Canonization At The Turn Of The 13th Century, Michelle Light

Library Faculty Publications

In 1234, the papacy asserted an exclusive right to canonize saints. To gain control over the canonization process, popes required increasingly specific written evidence from communities about their saints and developed investigative procedures to authenticate the communities’ miraculous evidence. Gathering written testimony for review in Rome was an act of domination over local processes for sanctifying community members. Not only did papal record-keeping remove decision-making from local hands, but it also enabled review of correct belief, structured community responses to the sacred, and provided an effective display of papal rights. During the process of St. Gilbert of Sempringham in 1201–1203, …
