Judicial Incentives: Some Evidence From Urban Trial Courts, Greg A. Caldeira

IUSTITIA

In the following pages, I shall outline the basics of a method for studying the motivations of trial judges - or any public officials, for that matter - that I find particularly interesting and fruitful - "incentive theory". The use of incentive theory is, in my view, a preliminary contribution to an ongoing movement to fill glaring gaps in the literature on judicial motivation and trial judging.

The Effectiveness Of The Sheriff's Department's Juvenile Diversion Projects In Southeast Los Angeles County (Ca), Dale E. Berger, Mark W. Lipsey, Laura B. Dennison, Janet M. Lange

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The major message of this report is that juvenile diversion, as practiced by the three Sheriff's Department Projects in southeast Los Angeles County, appears to be quite successful. The accomplishments of these three projects were assessed with regard to two primary goals: 1. Reduction of the number of juveniles referred further into the juvenile justice system (probation and the courts) by law enforcement. 2. Reduction of the incidence of juvenile delinquency among youthful offenders subsequent to diversion. 1. The pattern of findings reviewed in this report provide convincing evidence that both these goals are being met. The highlights of that …

A Study Testing The Control Theory: Teenage Drinking In Four Nebraska High Schools, Michael T. Eskey

Student Work

The U.S. Congress, through the findings of the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism, holds that alcohol abuse is the nation's greatest drug problem, asserting that it warps nine million lives and costs approximately $28 billion per year. There are 95 million drinkers in the U.S. most of whom drink alcohol without harm, but approximately five percent of adult Americans have serious drinking problems and are the source of much personal grief and huge cost to the nation (New York Times Review, 1973: 71).

A Follow-Up Study Of Children Released From Child Care Centers, Tamsel Tack Cabrera Jan 1977

A Follow-Up Study Of Children Released From Child Care Centers, Tamsel Tack Cabrera

Dissertations and Theses

Concerned by the increase in the average daily populations at Maclaren School for Boys and Hillcrest School for Girls, Children's Services Division has requested research related to children who have been released from child care centers and private institutions.

Child care centers were originally developed as alternatives to the state institutions. As children were diverted to various child care centers, the populations of these two institutions decreased, and plans were made to merge the two schools, thus closing Hillcrest. With the increase in populations at both schools, this is no longer feasible.

As much time and effort is spent in …
