Debris Slides And Related Flood Damage Associated With The September 1, 1951, Cloudburst In The Mt. Le Conte-Sugarland Mountain Area, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Donald Joseph Bogucki

Doctoral Dissertations

Numerous debris slides and considerable flood damage resulted from the September 1, 1951, cloudburst over the Mt. Le Conte-Sugarland Mountain area in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Over 100 individual slide scar heads were found in the study area, 41 of them in the Alum Cave Creek watershed, area of detailed field study.

The movement is thought to have been initiated by sliding at the head of the scar, with the mass of moving rock, soil, forest debris, and water developing flow characteristics downslope. Mt. Le Conte-Sugarland Mountain slide tracks may be divided into three sections: (1) the scar head, …

Special Report On Animal Overpopulation: Breeding Surplus Dogs And Cats Causes Suffering Sep 1970

Special Report On Animal Overpopulation: Breeding Surplus Dogs And Cats Causes Suffering

Special Reports

Overbreeding has created a surplus of nearly 50 million dogs and cats. These animals are unwanted and homeless. Some of them--the lucky ones--will get a quick, merciful death at humane society shelters. Most, however, haven't even the hope of being reached and protected from suffering in the 3,000 or more communities without humane societies. Instead, they roam the country--starving, thirsting, suffering from disease and injury.

This is suffering on a massive scale. Many factors contribute to it. Commercial interests like pet shops, for example, are partly to blame in suggesting there is money in breeding puppies and kittens. Veterinarians who …

The Metropolitan Area Concept And Its Development In Lima, Peru, Jose Luis Mesa Aug 1970

The Metropolitan Area Concept And Its Development In Lima, Peru, Jose Luis Mesa

Masters Theses

Introduction

The paucity of comparative urban research is of course not due to indifference or lack of foresight on the part of social scientists, but to the absence of comparable or standardized information from one country to another and to the technical problems presented by this deficiency. The units of observation themselves, that is "cities" and "towns," have not been standardized, nor have we had information on a representative sample of these for the world as a whole. Furthermore, the structure of urban communities has changed with increasing urbanization, a change that has gone further in some countries than in …

An Analysis Of Geographical Concepts And Characteristics Of Maps In Selected Textbooks, Helen Elizabeth Wittke May 1970

An Analysis Of Geographical Concepts And Characteristics Of Maps In Selected Textbooks, Helen Elizabeth Wittke

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the thesis was to examine the extent to which geography is integrated into history courses. This was done through analyses of the maps in eighth and tenth grade history books. Every map in each book was tabulated according to its purpose, characteristics, and cartographic techniques. The statistics which were gathered from these tabulations were then used as a basis for percentages of the maps devoted to various purposes. In addition to this, twenty-five maps were analyzed in detail, with an examination not only of the map, but of the accompanying text, and the method in which the …

A Comparative Analysis Of Kentucky State Parks, Steven Foster

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study is a survey of the Kentucky State Park system as it exists today. Investigations were directed primarily to factors which influence attendance at Kentucky's parks and to the development of a formula for use in determining possible expansion rates for these parks.

Postwar Industrial Locations In Minneapolis-St. Paul Area, Roger Prestwich Jan 1970

Postwar Industrial Locations In Minneapolis-St. Paul Area, Roger Prestwich

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The spatial and temporal dynamism of manufacturing industry in a metropolitan area is a vital aspect of urban morphology. The Twin City area is analyzed with respect lo changing overall patterns of industrial location over the time period 1946 to 1967. A centralizing tendency strongly emerged in the early years, but a marked decentralization prevailed later. The city boundary proved to be an economic as well as a political and socio-cultural barrier in terms of plant relocation. Decisions were dominated by space considerations, transportation technology and availability, and zoning regulations. The pattern of suburbanization of manufacturing, which occurred somewhat belatedly …

The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf Jan 1970

The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

Several alpine valley systems in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana and Wyoming, have been examined using techniques similar to methods of stream system analysis. The general equation y = a x**b is the most adequate mathematical model for the cross valley profile; b values range between 1.5 and 2.0, indicating a parabolic form. As intensity of erosion increases in the glacial valley system, the b value also increases, indicating relatively deeper and narrower valley cross sections. The law of stream numbers, the law of stream lengths, and the bifurcation ratio, derived from fluvial geomorphology, are also applicable in glacial geomorphology.

A Comparative Study Of Nickel Sulphide Deposits Within The Area Of The Canadian Shield, Robert G. Kreiner Jan 1970

A Comparative Study Of Nickel Sulphide Deposits Within The Area Of The Canadian Shield, Robert G. Kreiner

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In order to plan the future development of the Canadian Shield within a conceptual framework as suggested by the Mid-Canada Corridor concept, both the presently developed and potential, natural resources of this area need to be evaluated for knowledgeable development and management. To this purpose, various areas of nickel sulphide deposits within the area of the Canadian Shield have been studied with the object of determining similar sequences of intrusive events and their spatial relationships.

Within the Sudbury area, Ontario, five periods of intrusive activity have been recognized, each period characterized by an initial intrusion of acidic composition, followed in …

The Spatial Variation Of Voting Behaviour In Canada In 1963, Alex Yin-Cheung Mok Jan 1970

The Spatial Variation Of Voting Behaviour In Canada In 1963, Alex Yin-Cheung Mok

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous studies in different countries have unfolded consequential relationships between a number of socio-economic factors and voting behavior. Ethnicity, religion, trade or profession were among the most useful voter characteristics in explaining party preference. While hypotheses of voting behavior for Canada are also prolific, most of them were based upon local studies. The present study of 53 selected incorporated cities in 1963 general election attempts to test such hypotheses at the national level. The majority of the proposed independent variables were derived from the previous case studies. The hypotheses were tested by means of a computerized multiple regression analysis.
