While the literature supports sports tourism as an effective economic development strategy, small to medium-sized rural communities often do not have the resources to promote mega sports events. This paper presents estimates of the 44th Annual Racer Roundup College Rodeo’s economic impact. In addition to providing a case study of a relatively minor event, the aimed contribution is twofold: it offers solutions to typical challenges faced when estimating smaller-scale events’ economic impacts, and it suggests a simple way to obtain benchmark values for the magnitude of the results. The sustainable management of Blue Growth is an urgent issue for coastal states. Marine industries have rapidly expanded over the last two decades and this is projected to continue with the European Green Deal and post-COVID economic recovery policies. The intensification of Blue Growth could have adverse socio-ecological implications and must, therefore, be managed in terms of sustainability, natural resource boundaries, and coastal community well-being. Managing Blue Growth in a sustainable manner however, is challenging due to the longstanding inefficiencies and inertia of existing marine governance regimes. One of the most effective ways for rural communities to improve the local economy is by exploring opportunities related to tourism. When communities focus their resources on expanding and improving the tourism industry, it leads to additional opportunities for these communities to increase their revenue, provide jobs and revitalize the local economy.
