That Used To Be Us: Through The Eyes Of The Aviation Industry, Kelly A. Whealan-George Jan 2015

That Used To Be Us: Through The Eyes Of The Aviation Industry, Kelly A. Whealan-George

Kelly Whealan George

The U.S. economic success was rooted in an industrial policy which had five pillars of a prosperity formula that served as a catalyst for development and growth: 1) public/private cooperation on education, 2) immigration policy, 3) infrastructure, 4) risk/capital management, and 5) government-funded scientific research. In this paper, the development and growth of the aviation industry is viewed in the framework of such a prosperity formula in order to face the four areas that the entire economy will need to face in the current market in order to be competitive in the global market in the 21st century. Since the …

Green Technology And Optimal Emissions Taxation, Stuart Mcdonald, Joanna Poyago-Theotoky Feb 2014

Green Technology And Optimal Emissions Taxation, Stuart Mcdonald, Joanna Poyago-Theotoky

Joanna Poyago-Theotoky

We examine the impact of an optimal emissions tax on research and development of emission reducing green technology (E-R&D) in the presence of R\&D spillovers. We show that the size and effectiveness of the optimal emissions tax depends on the type of the R&D spillover: input or output spillover. In the case of R&D input spillovers (where only knowledge spillovers are accounted for), the optimal emissions tax required to stimulate R&D is always higher than when there is an R&D output spillover (where abatement and knowledge spillovers exist simultaneously). We also find that optimal emissions taxation and cooperative R&D complement …

La Dolarización De La Economía Mexicana En La Etapa De Apertura Comercial, Vicente German-Soto, Oliver J. Sifuentes Herrera Dec 2012

La Dolarización De La Economía Mexicana En La Etapa De Apertura Comercial, Vicente German-Soto, Oliver J. Sifuentes Herrera

Human Capital Formation And Economic Development In Pakistan: An Empirical Analysis, Muhammad Irfan Chani, Mahboob Ul Hassan, Muhammad Shahid

Muhammad Irfan Chani

This study investigates the casual relationship between economic development and formation of human capital in Pakistan. Based on endogenous growth theory, this study empirically tests the standard growth model consisting of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita as a dependent variable and human capital formation, investment in physical capital and labor force as independent variables. Autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL) bound testing approach to cointegration is used to check the long-run equilibrium relationship between the variables included in the model. For checking the causal relationship between economic development and human capital formation, pair-wise Granger causality test is used for time series …

El Vínculo Inversión Extranjera Directa Y Desigualdad Salarial En Los Estados Mexicanos, Vicente German-Soto, Nohemí Marcela Ríos González

Vicente German-Soto

Using state information we analyze the link among foreign investment and wage inequality in Mexico. We show the existence of an increase of the demand of qualified work, which has had major importance in the states with major reception of foreign direct investment (FDI), since also FDI tends to concentrate itself geographically. The regression results indicate that 1% of increase in the per capita foreign investment has an effect near to 6% of increase of the wage inequality. Meanwhile, when we consider only the set of states with major reception of foreign investment a negative effect of 12% is estimated.

Measurement Of The Agglomeration And The Geographic Concentration Of The Innovation Across Mexican States, Vicente German-Soto, Luis Gutiérrez Flores Aug 2011

Measurement Of The Agglomeration And The Geographic Concentration Of The Innovation Across Mexican States, Vicente German-Soto, Luis Gutiérrez Flores

Vicente German-Soto

Nowadays, the extent of the innovation activities for the productivity and the economic growth is evident in regional economics. A large body of theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that to achieve higher well-being levels of the population it is essential to reinforce the innovation capacity of the economies. In this work we measure the extent of agglomeration and the geographic concentration across Mexican states using an endogenous innovation approach estimated through econometric techniques. The size of the regional economies to assess the importance of the scale effects is also a central concern. Using data from the Mexican states, evidence is …

Determination Of Import Demand In Pakistan: The Role Of Expenditure Components, Muhammad Irfan Chani, Zahid Pervaiz, Amatul R. Chaudhary

Muhammad Irfan Chani

The paper uses imperfect substitution approach to derive the aggregate import demand function on the basis of disaggregated expenditure components. This derived import demand function is then empirically tested for Pakistan by using co-integration and error correction mechanism. The empirical results show that elasticity of import demand with respect to different macro components of final expenditure is different. The import demand in Pakistan is affected positively and significantly by all expenditure components. The relative prices have negative but insignificant relationship with import demand in Pakistan. The findings indicate that use of aggregate expenditure variable in the aggregate import demand function …

Convergencia Y Divergencia En El Sector Industrial De Los Estados Mexicanos: Un Análisis Espacial No Paramétrico, Vicente German-Soto, Jose Luis Escobedo Sagaz, Luis Flores Gallegos

Vicente German-Soto

We investigate the regional income inequality within industrial sector of the Mexican states. Mexican experience in this king of studies only exists for the total economy and it suggests that these differences have been accentuated in recent dates after they have experimented one stage of reductions. The analysis is carry on during the period 1960-1998 and it is supported in spatial econometric techniques. The results indicate that regional growth of the industrial sector has been quite heterogeneous. Techniques identify a rich cluster of states in the North and another cluster of poor states in the South of the country.

Juridische Kaders In De Sociale Economie: Een Rechtseconomische Doorlichting, Astrid Coates, Wim Van Opstal Dec 2009

Juridische Kaders In De Sociale Economie: Een Rechtseconomische Doorlichting, Astrid Coates, Wim Van Opstal

Wim Van Opstal

Muhammad Irfan Chani

Pakistan showed a healthy growth rate of 5.6 percent during the entire history and faced many ups and downs in economic growth due to dramatic changes in political regimes. The literature shows mixed results regarding the impact of autocracy or democracy on economic growth. The aggregate growth of the economy under autocracy remained better as compared to democratic period. Financial indicators show consistent path through out the history of Pakistan. Different trade policies are designed in different regime to run the external sector and the impact of each policy was different.

Selección Empírica Para El Desarrollo Económico Regional, Vicente German-Soto

Vicente German-Soto

This work disscuses aspects linked to identification of the important sectors through the input-output coefficients for the regional levels of the economies. We base our empirical evidence in a technology structure derivated of that sectors pushing of final demand. Results reflect that a unique method method to select important sectors does not exist. An final demand index selects to commercial sector as the most important. Sectors wiht the highest index correspond to activities highly dependent of the government.
