This paper investigates the role of imports in India's impressive economic growth. Annual data ranging from 1970 to 2005 are used to investigate the impact of imports on economic growth that is measured by the real GDP. Johansen's ( 1988) cointegration tests indicate that these two variables are cointegrated. Therefore, a long run relationship between imports and the real GDP exists. A vector error correction (VEC) testing framework is used in a further data analysis. VEC tests indicate that imports have impacted positively India's economic growth in the short run. Therefore, imports may have played an important role in India's …

The U.S. dollar was in the line of fire as leaders from the largest developed and developing countries participated in the G8 meeting on July, 2009. China and other emerging market heavy-weights such as Russia and Brazil are pushing for debate on an eventual shift away from the dollar to a new global reserve currency. These countries are particularly concerned about the heavy debt burden of the United States and fear inflation will further debase the dollar which has lost 33 percent in value against other major currencies since 2002. This article is an empirical investigation of the potential feasibility of an optimum currency area (OCA) in South Asia. Under an OCA, member countries share a common currency (like the Euro), and forego autonomy with respect to monetary policy instruments. Countries are good candidates for forming an OCA if there is a long-run relationship in the trend (permanent) component of output. Our results indicate existence of such a long-run relationship in the trend component of gross domestic product (GDP) among the member countries in South Asia. Hence, the South Asia region has the potential to form an OCA.

This paper investigates the relationship between imports and economic growth in the US in the long run and the short run. Quarterly data ranging from the first quarter of 1970 to the fourth quarter of 2000 are used to investigate this relationship. Cointegration tests using Johansen's (] 988) technique are used to analyze the long run relationship between imports and economic growth (measured by nominal GDP). Test results indicate that imports and economic growth are related in the long run. The short run analysis of the data is conducted within vector error correction (VEC) testing framework. VEC rest results indicate …
