Adjustment In Africa: Lessons From Country Case Studies, Ishrat Husain, Rashid Faruqee

This report provides an assessment of structural adjustment policies undertaken by seven African countries in the mid-1980s. This report is distinct from other studies on this subject. First, it emphasizes the specific economic and social circumstances of each country that led to the adoption of an adjustment program. Second, it measures and analyzes the extent to which the adjustment policies were, in fact, implemented in each case. Finally, the report attempts to assess economic performance in relation to the strength of the implementation of policy reforms.

Employer Recruitment And The Integration Of Industrial Labor Markets, 1870-1914, Joshua L. Rosenbloom

The substantial shifts in the sectoral and geographic location of economic activity that took place in the late nineteenth-century United States required the reallocation of large quantities of labor. This paper examines the response of labor market institutions to the challenges of unbalanced growth. Based on previously unexploited descriptive evidence from the reports of the Immigration Commission it argues that employer recruitment was crucial to the adjustment of labor markets to shifting patterns of supply and demand. In 1994, Nigeria faced economic challenges such as declining GDP growth, inflation, and a weakened external sector due to expansionary fiscal and monetary policies, political unrest, and labor issues. Despite this, the global economy saw stronger recovery in industrialized countries and developing regions like Asia and Latin America. The Nigerian economy struggled with slow growth, manufacturing decline, rising inflation, large budget deficit, and weakened external sector performance. Efforts to stabilize the exchange rate were hindered by differences between official and unofficial market rates. Internationally, there were improvements in the world economy with higher growth rates in developed and developing countries. …
