Social State Definition And The Economic Control Systems Product, David Randall Jenkins Jan 2007

Social State Definition And The Economic Control Systems Product, David Randall Jenkins

David Randall Jenkins

Professor Arrow formulated his social state definition in terms of each individual's consumption versus factors of production. Ancient philosophers understood impossibility-resolved social choice theory derived welfare models involve reflexive economic form hierarchical structures where the individual is implicit. The scripture writers also concluded theory construction and empirical research are not reflexive such that empirical research undertaken in the absence of an essential theoretical nexus is illusionary. Therefore, empirical aggregation surrogates are unable to competently effect Arrovian impossibility end-runs. The scripture writers' reference ethics based aggregation mechanics articulate impossibility-resolved (social welfare function formulation: social state definition) transitivity.

[Introduction To] Teaching The Ethical Foundations Of Economics, Jonathan B. Wight, John S. Morton Jan 2007

[Introduction To] Teaching The Ethical Foundations Of Economics, Jonathan B. Wight, John S. Morton

Bookshelf

Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics contains 10 lessons that reintroduce an ethical dimension to economics in the tradition of Adam Smith, who believed ethical considerations were central to life. Utilizing these innovative instructional materials your students will learn about the important role ethics and character play in a market economy and how, in turn, markets influence ethical behavior.

The lessons do more than illustrate how ethical conduct improves an economy. They actively involve the students through simulations, group decision making, problem solving, classroom demonstrations and role playing. The lessons encourage students to think critically about ethical dilemmas.

What Is Ailing The German Economy? A Critical Analysis Of German Social Market Economics, Robert T. Cheek Jr. Jan 2007

What Is Ailing The German Economy? A Critical Analysis Of German Social Market Economics, Robert T. Cheek Jr.

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper offers a narrative historical description of the German Social Market Economy, from its inception following World War II, up to the recent Agenda 2010 reforms enacted under the administration of Chancellor Gerhard Schroder. It is the purpose of this work to explore why the German Social Market System enjoyed such a high degree of success in its early years, and which flaws might be causing the chronic problems of low growth and high unemployment that have plagued Germany more recently. In particular, the paper argues that a high-cost and highly inflexible labor market resulting from Germany's system of …

Far From The Commonwealth: A Report On Low-Income Asian Americans In Massachusetts, Michael Liu, Thao Tran, Paul Watanabe Jan 2007

Far From The Commonwealth: A Report On Low-Income Asian Americans In Massachusetts, Michael Liu, Thao Tran, Paul Watanabe

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Asian Americans are as diverse in history, language, class, ethnic origin, and demographics as any group in the United States. This complexity is reflected in their economic status. Much attention has focused on the significant economic attainments of many Asian Americans. The fact, however, that a large number of Asian Americans also live in poverty or have low incomes has received much less notice from researchers, foundations, government agencies, and others.

The principal purpose of this report is to bring attention to and shed more light on a significant sector of Asian Americans in Massachusetts, those with low incomes. We …

Jurisprudential Schizophrenia: On Form And Function In Islamic Finance, Haider Ala Hamoudi Jan 2007

Jurisprudential Schizophrenia: On Form And Function In Islamic Finance, Haider Ala Hamoudi

Articles

Despite its explosive growth over the past several decades, Islamic finance continues to have trouble attracting large numbers of otherwise pious Muslims as potential investors. The underlying reason for this is that the means that the practice employs to circumvent some of the central Muslim bans relating to finance (most notably, the ban on interest) are entirely formal in their structure and are equivalent to conventional structures both legally and economically. However, the practice purports to serve functional ends; namely, through offering Muslims alternative means of finance that are intended to further Islamic ideals of fairness and social justice. This …

Deficit Reduction In The U.S. Senate : The Search For Moral Leadership In The Budget Process, David Kendall Roberts Jan 2007

Deficit Reduction In The U.S. Senate : The Search For Moral Leadership In The Budget Process, David Kendall Roberts

Honors Theses

Contemporary deficit reduction and fiscal responsibility are central to the economic wellbeing of future generations as well as their ability to freely decide their own policy priorities. Many scholarly publications and popular commentary on budget policy describe the obstacles to deficit reduction and political leaders' unwillingness to address the nation's long-term fiscal problems. However, current discussions of budget deficits and the national debt have not been informed by a comprehensive empirical analysis of attempts to reduce the deficit. This thesis examines all deficit-affecting floor amendments to budget legislation from 1975 to 2005 in order to assess whether the bleak account …

La Governance Nell'azienda Comune Di Milano Dall'xi Al Xiii Secolo, Paola Saracino

Paola Saracino

Downtown Ladies: Informal Commercial Importers, A Haitian Anthropologist And Self-Making In Jamaica, Gina Ulysse

Gina Athena Ulysse

The Caribbean “market woman” is ingrained in the popular imagination as the archetype of black womanhood in countries throughout the region. Challenging this stereotype and other outdated images of black women, Downtown Ladies offers a more complex picture by documenting the history of independent international traders—known as informal commercial importers, or ICIs—who travel abroad to import and export a vast array of consumer goods sold in the public markets of Kingston, Jamaica. Both by-products of and participants in globalization, ICIs operate on multiple levels and, since their emergence in the 1970s, have made significant contributions to the regional, national, and …

Social Development In The Tibet Autonomous Region: A Contemporary And Historical Analysis, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu Dec 2006

Social Development In The Tibet Autonomous Region: A Contemporary And Historical Analysis, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu

Reza Hasmath

This paper will historically examine social development outcomes in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in respect to poverty eradication, education and employment, health care and social integration. Moreover, it will offer tangible advice for improving future social development work in TAR. The main theoretical approach is a literature and policy review of social development in TAR from 1951 to present. Seemingly Tibet’s social development strategy has been achieved through a strong top-down approach. However, the road ahead for TAR once basic needs are satisfactorily met, is a move towards a participatory approach, whereby Tibetans can directly contribute and have a …
