The Effects Of Bargaining On Market Outcomes: Evidence From Buyer And Seller Specific Estimates, Subal Kumbhakar, Christopher Parmeter Dec 2008

The Effects Of Bargaining On Market Outcomes: Evidence From Buyer And Seller Specific Estimates, Subal Kumbhakar, Christopher Parmeter

Christopher F. Parmeter

In this paper we examine wage dispersion in labor markets across currently employed workers. We argue that differences in the potential productivity of a match (typically assumed to be known in the previous literature) generates a surplus between the minimum wage the worker is willing to accept and the maximum wage the firm is willing to offer for the job. Existence of this surplus leads to wage dispersion due to negotiating over the amounts extracted by each agent. Our objective is to estimate the surplus extracted by each firm-worker pair and the effect of the net extracted surplus on the …

Imposing Economic Constraints On Nonparametric Regression: Survey, Implementation And Extensions, Daniel Henderson, Christopher Parmeter

Christopher F. Parmeter

Economic conditions such as convexity, homogeneity, homotheticity, and monotonicity are all important assumptions or consequences of assumptions of economic functionals to be estimated. Recent research has seen a renewed interest in imposing constraints in nonparametric regression. We survey the available methods in the literature, discuss the challenges that present themselves when empirically implementing these methods, and extend an existing method to handle general nonlinear constraints. A heuristic discussion on the empirical implementation for methods that use sequential quadratic programming is provided for the reader, and simulated and empirical evidence on the distinction between constrained and unconstrained nonparametric regression surfaces is …

Is Financial Innovation A Still Relevant Issue?, Paola Bongini, Luisa Anderloni

Paola Bongini

In this study we investigate the effects of financial innovation on performance and asset growth for a sample of EU large banks. The novel contribution of this study is the use of a unique dataset that identifies banks’ attitude towards innovation across time and the level of information conveyed to market participants in order to understand: a) to what extent, in recent years, banks have focused their attention on financial innovation; b) to what extent an innovating attitude translates into greater asset growth and higher profitability;

Bee Pollination In Agricultural Ecosystems, Tammy Horn Dec 2008

Bee Pollination In Agricultural Ecosystems, Tammy Horn

Tammy Horn

In her endorsement of this landmark study of pollinators’ role in Industrial Agriculture and wildlife management, May Berenbaum writes that this book should be ‘‘required reading for practitioners and policymakers alike.’’ Although at times, the book’s structure feels like a forced march, I concur with Berenbaum for the most part. It is a powerful expression from fifteen of the more important voices shaping discussions ranging from genetically-modified organisms to alfalfaleafcutting bees to biocontrols. To have them collected in one collection is a testament to pollination management being taken seriously as a profession. The writers included in this book are impressive …

Women Head Of The Village Councils And Water Borne Diseases, Ambrish A. Dongre Dec 2008

Women Head Of The Village Councils And Water Borne Diseases, Ambrish A. Dongre

Ambrish A Dongre

This paper examines the relation between prevalence of water- borne diseases and gender of the head of the village councils by exploiting a `natural experiment' in local governance in India. A constitutional amendment in early 1990s ensured that only women could be the head in at least one- third of the village councils selected randomly. Utilizing a unique sample survey, we show that having a woman as the council head seems to have no effect on prevalence of water borne diseases. But if we look into the sub- categories of women council heads, we find that women council heads from …

Group Diversity And Salience: A Natural Experiment From A Television Game Show, Gabriella A. Bucci, Rafael A. Tenorio Dec 2008

Group Diversity And Salience: A Natural Experiment From A Television Game Show, Gabriella A. Bucci, Rafael A. Tenorio

Gabriella A. Bucci

We take advantage of a naturally occurring experiment in a television game show to study the impact of group characteristics on their ability to select salient solutions in a matching game. The Family Feud features families seeking to earn prizes by matching the results of public opinion surveys on various subjects. Our main result is that, controlling for task difficulty, families that are more diverse, as measured by the relatedness of their members, are more successful at matching wider ranges of survey responses. This highlights the importance of member diversity in expanding information and decision frames of reference within a …

Offshoring And Unemployment:The Role Of Search Frictions And Labor Mobility, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan Dec 2008

Offshoring And Unemployment:The Role Of Search Frictions And Labor Mobility, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Priya Ranjan

In a two-sector, general-equilibrium model with labor-market search frictions, we find that wage increases and sectoral unemployment decreases upon offshoring in the presence of perfect intersectoral labor mobility. If, as a result, labor moves to the sector with the lower (or equal) vacancy costs, there is an unambiguous decrease in economywide unemployment. With imperfect intersectoral labor mobility, unemployment in the offshoring sector can rise, with an unambiguous unemployment reduction in the non-offshoring sector. Imperfect labor mobility can result in a mixed equilbrium in which only some firms in the industry offshore, with unemployment in this sector rising.
