E-Journals And The Continuum Of Content: Exponential Expansion Is Near, Gordon C. Tibbitts Jul 2009

E-Journals And The Continuum Of Content: Exponential Expansion Is Near, Gordon C. Tibbitts

Gordon C. Tibbitts III

e-Journals are evolving and will soon contain a massive array of information including data sets, blogs, videos, forums, conferences, interlinked services, chats, and more. They are expanding the comprehensiveness, depth, detail, and breadth of scholarly communication and forming a continuum from the traditional ISI ranked journals and all other forms of scholarship. e-Journals in their new form contain independently discoverable content items which rise in value when attributes of registration, certification, awareness, archiving, and reward are applied as they have been for centuries to traditional journal articles. As these new e-journals expand so will the move to a more immediate …

An Ethnographic Study Of The Media Consumption Habits Of Registered Nurses In The Chicago Designated Market Area (Dma), Sherri L. Ter Molen Jun 2009

An Ethnographic Study Of The Media Consumption Habits Of Registered Nurses In The Chicago Designated Market Area (Dma), Sherri L. Ter Molen

Sherri L. Ter Molen

Because there has been a nursing shortage for the past decade and because the competition between employers for experienced registered nurses is fierce, I utilized archival quantitative data from a syndicated advertising database known as The Media Audit, quantitative data I collected from 100 surveys, qualitative data that I collected from 15 interviews, and qualitative data that I collected during 20 hours of observations in hospital cafeterias and nearby restaurants to discover how RNs use media, whether or not they share these media as an occupational co-culture, & their attitudes toward recruitment advertising in these media. This study draws upon …

Ubiquitäres Computing Im Gesundheitswesen, Michael Friedewald Jun 2009

Ubiquitäres Computing Im Gesundheitswesen, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

Cyberchiefs. Autonomy And Authority In Online Tribes, Mathieu O'Neil Apr 2009

Cyberchiefs. Autonomy And Authority In Online Tribes, Mathieu O'Neil

Mathieu O'Neil

People are inventing new ways of working together on the internet. Decentralized production thrives on weblogs, wikis and free software projects. In Cyberchiefs, Mathieu O'Neil focuses on the regulation of these working relationships. He examines the transformation of leadership and expertise in online networks, and the emergence of innovative forms of participatory politics. What are the costs and benefits of alternatives to hierarchical organization? Using case studies of online projects or "tribes" such as the radical Primitivism archive, the Daily Kos political blog, the Debian free software project and Wikipedia, O’Neil shows that leaders must support maximum autonomy for participants …

Incentivize Me!—How Incumbent Carriers In The United States Attempt To Extract Greater Deregulation And Incentives In Exchange For Making Next Generation Network Investments, Rob M. Frieden Jan 2009

Incentivize Me!—How Incumbent Carriers In The United States Attempt To Extract Greater Deregulation And Incentives In Exchange For Making Next Generation Network Investments, Rob M. Frieden

Rob Frieden

Incumbent carriers often vilify the regulatory process as a drain on efficiency and an unnecessary burden in light of robust marketplace competition. Some claim that regulation creates disincentives for investing in expensive next generation networks (“NGNs”), particularly if regulations mandate unbundling of services into composite parts, with burdensome interconnection and below market pricing of access by competitors. Both incumbents, prospective market entrants and recent market entrants may seek to tilt the competitive playing field to their advantage typically by securing a regulatory sanction that helps them reduce investment costs, delay having to make an investment, or secure a competitive advantage …

Privacy, Trust And Policy-Making: Challenges And Responses, David Wright, Serge Gutwirth, Michael Friedewald, Paul De Hert, Marc Langheinrich, Anna Moscibroda

Michael Friedewald

The authors contend that the emerging ubiquitous Information Society (aka ambient intelligence, pervasive computing, ubiquitous networking and so on) will raise many privacy and trust issues that are context-dependent. These issues will pose many challenges for policy- makers and stakeholders because people’s notions of privacy and trust are different and shifting. People’s attitudes towards privacy and protecting their personal data can vary significantly according to differing circumstances. In addition, notions of privacy and trust are changing over time. The authors provide numerous examples of the challenges facing policy-makers and identify some possible responses, but they see a need for improvements …

(Re)Building Çatalhöyük: Changing Virtual Reality In Archaeology, Colleen L. Morgan Jan 2009

(Re)Building Çatalhöyük: Changing Virtual Reality In Archaeology, Colleen L. Morgan

Colleen L Morgan

Building virtual models of archaeological sites has been seen as a legitimate mode of representing the past, yet these models are too often the end product of a process in which archaeologists have relatively limited engagement. Instead of building static, isolated, uncanny, and authorless reconstructions, I argue for a more active role for archaeologists in virtual reconstruction and address issues of representational accuracy, personal expression in avatars and peopling the virtual past. Interactive virtual worlds such as Second Life provide tools and an environment that archaeologists can use to challenge static modes of representation and increases access to non-expert participants …

Time As Symbolic Currency In Knowledge Work, Dariusz Jemielniak Jan 2009

Time As Symbolic Currency In Knowledge Work, Dariusz Jemielniak

Dariusz Jemielniak

The paper discusses the issue of time slips in software development. Increasing time sacrifices toward work constitutes an important part of modern organizational environment. In fact, the reign over time is a crucial element in controlling the labor process. Yet a lack of cultural studies covering different approaches to this issue remains—particularly those focusing on high-skilled salaried workers. This article is a small attempt to fill this gap, based on an analysis of unstructured qualitative interviews with high-tech professionals from a B2B software company. It focuses on the issue of timing in IT projects, as perceived by software engineers. The …

Knowledge Management: Fad Or Enduring Organizational Concept?, Dariusz Jemielniak, Jerzy Kociatkiewicz

Dariusz Jemielniak

Knowledge management and knowledge-intensive work are two of today’s hot buzzwords, though both already have a history of managerial usage. While some authors claim that knowledge is the most important organizational asset in contemporary society, others retort that much of knowledge management literature and practical solutions are just perfunctory and propagandist and many, if not most, managerial polices rely on manipulation of emotions and identity creation. This chapter aims to capitalize on this fascinating and timely research area. We want to present the current business fad of knowledge-management in terms of excess and forgetful repetition of ideas. We look at …
