Exploring The Relationship Between Facebook, Face-To-Face And Intercultural Communication, Rebecca Schaefer Dec 2011

Exploring The Relationship Between Facebook, Face-To-Face And Intercultural Communication, Rebecca Schaefer

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

My Capstone Experience/Thesis project seeks to explore and examine the effects of Facebook on communication between American and international students. The use of social media as a means to communicate with others is increasing at an amazing rate. Facebook has become my generation’s favorite way to communicate with friends and family and “to Facebook” has unofficially become a verb that many college students will use. While social media, such as Facebook and Linked-In, may encourage American college students to communicate with international students beyond the classroom and campus, it seems that Facebook is on the way to becoming a substitute …

Coping With Distance: An Empirical Study Of Communication On The Jazz Platform, Renuka Sindhgatta, Bikram Sengupta, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Global software development - which is characterized by teams separated by physical distance and/or time-zone differences - has traditionally posed significant communication challenges. Often these have caused delays in completing tasks, or created misalignment across sites leading to re-work. In recent years, however, a new breed of development environments with rich collaboration features have emerged to facilitate cross-site work in distributed projects. In this paper we revisit the question "does distance matter?" in the context of IBM Jazz Platform -- a state-of-the-art collaborative development environment. We study the ecosystem of a large distributed team of around 300 members across 35 …

MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015

As use of the internet has rapidly increased around the globe, it has become vital that municipalities are able to effectively communicate with, provide services to, and engage, constituents using online tools. Trade and academic research and literature has delved into the myriad opportunities these tools present, including increased transparency, open two-way communication between officials, administrators and the public, and increased efficiency and ease of access to services through online transactions.Additionally, transformative tools are able to increase citizen awareness, participation, and engagement. Meta-Communication For Reflective Online Conversations: Models For Distance Education, Ugur -. Demiray, Gulsun -. Kurubacak, T. Volkan Yuzer

Ugur Demiray

One of the ways in which distance education is capable of reaching online learners is the basis and method of meta-communication. Therefore, it is important to understand how to design reflective online conversations and how to implement a diverse milieu for prospective online learners so that they are able to transfer their information, knowledge, and learning from theoretical forms to real life experiences.

Meta-Communication for Reflective Online Conversations: Models for Distance Educations discusses the potential of meta-communication models for building and managing reflective online conversations among distance learners. This book unites models for meta-communication, distance education, and reflective online conversations …

Staff Terminations In The Church: A Beastly Endeavor, James Shoopman Jul 2011

Staff Terminations In The Church: A Beastly Endeavor, James Shoopman

Publications

Excerpt from article: "I suspect I have felt a similar beast on the prowl in Christian congregations more often than any of us should have. Perhaps you too have seen abusive and overly authoritarian pastors dismissed. Predatory church members are sometimes openly "disfellowshiped" or privately "disinvited." However, even such measures on the part of a congregation may sometimes become the use and abuse of power. We do not always recognize the abuse of power when we see it."

A Qualitative Study Examining Tensions In Interdoctor Telephone Consultations, Anupma Wadhwa, Lorelei Lingard Jun 2011

A Qualitative Study Examining Tensions In Interdoctor Telephone Consultations, Anupma Wadhwa, Lorelei Lingard

Lorelei Lingard

OBJECTIVE: Communication skills have gained increasing attention in medical education. Much of the existing literature and medical curricula addresses issues of doctor-patient communication. The critical importance of communication between health professionals, however, is now coming under the spotlight. The interdoctor telephone consultation is a common health care setting in which health professional communication skills are exercised. Breakdowns in this communication commonly occur and, surprisingly, this skill is not formally addressed in medical training. This study sought to clarify the communication issues that can occur during interdoctor telephone consultations in order to inform future educational initiatives in this domain. METHODS: Data …

Towards Safer Interprofessional Communication: Constructing A Model Of "Utility" From Preoperative Team Briefings, Lorelei Lingard, Sarah Whyte, Sherry Espin, G. Baker, Beverley Orser, Diane Doran Jun 2011

Towards Safer Interprofessional Communication: Constructing A Model Of "Utility" From Preoperative Team Briefings, Lorelei Lingard, Sarah Whyte, Sherry Espin, G. Baker, Beverley Orser, Diane Doran

Lorelei Lingard

"Improved team communication" is broadly advocated in the discourse on safety but rarely supported by a precise understanding of the relationship between specific communication practices and concrete improvements in collaborative work processes. We sought to improve such understanding by analyzing the discourse arising from structured preoperative team briefings among surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists prior to general surgery procedures. Analysis of observers' fieldnotes from 302 briefings yielded a two-part model of communicative "utility", defined as the visible impact of communication on team awareness and behavior. "Informational utility" occurred when team awareness or knowledge was improved by provision of new information, explicit …

The Rhetorical 'Turn' In Medical Education: What Have We Learned And Where Are We Going?, Lorelei Lingard

Lorelei Lingard

This paper presents a critical reflection on the contributions and challenges associated with one rhetorical approach to studying teaching and learning communication in health professions education. A rhetorical approach treats language as a social act, and attends to the role of language in establishing professional identities and relationships. The research has produced insights into the use of standard communication formats to teach novices, the nature of socialization on clinical teams, and the relationship between communication patterns and patient safety. Challenges and emerging questions include the problem of accounting for the material dimensions of communication in a rhetorical model, grappling with …

Texting Versus Talking: Age Sex And Extroversion As Predictors Of Frequency And Preference Among An Undergraduate Cohort., Chris J. Labowe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines text messaging behavior of ETSU undergraduates. Data come from a survey of 485 students enrolled during the 2010 fall semester. The current study explores the effects of sex, age, and extroversion on (1) the volume of texts a person sends and (2) preferences for texting or calling. The study also explores the use of cell phones as a means of avoiding others during co-present interaction. Findings reveal that age is the strongest predictor of text messaging, with younger respondents being more likely to text. The study also finds that women prefer texting, while men prefer voice calls. …
