Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese
Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese
Senior Honors Projects
A number of policymakers have attributed America’s defeat in Vietnam, the first “television war,” to a collapse of public support caused by nightly news coverage of combat with associated iconic photographs and moving images. The assumptions underlying this opinion are that photographs and video footage of war have an inherent pacifistic bias, that the emotional impact of visual images can override reason, and that powerful images can drive or overturn foreign policy. This has led subsequent administrations to increase their control over the media’s coverage of war. During the Vietnam War, the press was relatively uncensored. As a response to …
Are They For Real? Activism And Ironic Identities, Amber Day
Are They For Real? Activism And Ironic Identities, Amber Day
English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles
A new breed of political activist has begun to appear on the streets and in the news. They are no longer trying to out-shout their opponents, but are agreeing with them instead, enthusiastically taking their adversary’s position to exaggerated extremes. It is a practice here termed “identity-nabbing,” in which participants pretend to be someone they are not, appearing in public as exaggerated caricatures of their opponents or ambiguously co-opting some of their power. This paper focuses on three groups in particular: The Billionaires for Bush, Reverend Billy, and the Yes Men. Each group stages elaborate, ironically humorous stunts as a …
Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Communication, Psychology, and Sociology are three leading academic disciplines engaged in the social scientific study of prayer, the spiritual communication between a believer(s) and God, but rarely do these disciplines collaborate in interdisciplinary prayer scholarship. Possibilities for interdisciplinary prayer research in a health context are explored through a review of the literature and academic interviews. Interdisciplinary linkages in the prayer-health context are organized in an integral "all-quadrant" theoretical model, and an assessment of the viability of interdisciplinary prayer-health research is considered.
China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam
China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam
Allen Gnanam
China- Tibet tensions are continually growing, as Tibetans are protesting for total independence from China, despite condemnation from their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who is only seeking a sense of autonomy for Tibet (Sinder, 2008). As Tibetan protests are becoming violent and aggressive, the Dalai Lama has also threatened to resign as Tibet’s government in exile (Sinder, 2008), however, his rhetoric is not being exposed to the Tibetan people, due to government censorship in China. Therefore the Dalai Lama, an exiled institutional entrepreneur, has to find new methods that will enable his influential message, to be received by the …

Beyond 'Hot Lips' And 'Big Nurse': Creative Writing And Nursing, Sandra Young
Beyond 'Hot Lips' And 'Big Nurse': Creative Writing And Nursing, Sandra Young
English Faculty Publications
This essay describes a special topics creative writing course designed for nursing students, and argues that creative writing strategies work to improve nurses' compositional skills. Also discussed are other potential benefits from creatively writing patients' lives, notably, the blending of arts and sciences, and the ways in which medical schools are encouraging their students to study the humanities, especially literature and creative writing. The essay includes student creative writing samples.
The essay also discusses the depiction of nurses in popular culture. M*A*S*H*, Richard Hooker’s black comedy about the antics of doctors and nurses during the Korean War, gave us “Hot …

Mothers In The Media: Blamed And Celebrated -- An Examination Of Drug Abuse And Multiple Births., Sonya Charles, Tricha Shivas
Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications
The media has always had a profound interest in mothers and birth stories. This study examined the difference between media portrayal of 'good' mothers and 'bad' mothers. Did the media cover potential harm to fetuses and would-be children in the same way for two groups of mothers: (a) pregnant women addicted to illicit drugs and (b) women who chose to continue a high-order, multiple birth pregnancy? Two searches were conducted on Lexis-Nexis, one with keywords 'McCaughey and birth' and another with the keywords 'pregnancy and illegal drugs.' A total of 210 articles were coded for the McCaughey search, and 90 …

Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler
Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Nationwide statistical polling during the past 40 years have indicated that prayer is a frequent and important activity for a majority of Americans. Yet communication scholars have yet to theoretically consider the relationship between prayer and communication. This investigation compared and contrasted a particular type of prayer, Interpersonal Christ¦·n Prayer (ICP), with a particular type of communication context, Interpersonal Communication (IC). Results suggested that ICP and IC share common ground in their dyadic nature, intentionality, and in specific communication processes, and that they differ in the nature of the relational being one is communicating with, the locus of initial intent …
A Communication Audit Of The Catholic Diocese Of Wheeling-Charleston, Larry W. Dorsch
A Communication Audit Of The Catholic Diocese Of Wheeling-Charleston, Larry W. Dorsch
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the principal existential task of the Church. "Communicating" and "the Gospel" both are terms loaded with philosophical underpinnings and practical implications that constantly challenge the church to examine its established patterns of ministry and behavior, as well as its priorities and budgets.
The strides in communication practice and technology of the twentieth century have shaken the church's modus operandi in ways that are unparalleled in the previous nineteen centuries of Christian faith. While to be sure the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century sparked major shifts and realignments in the …

Radio propaganda was one of the chief weapons of psychological warfare used by the Nazis. When Hitler came to power, one of the aims of Nazi propaganda was to make his new order acceptable to the powers abroad, before preparing the ground for his expansionist moves. The new ruler of Germany regarded propaganda, rather then diplomacy, as the more suitable instrument to attain the desired end.
As a result of this new weapon in propaganda, there came many problems for the home front. How could they maintain the faith and morale of the people being submitted to this constant barrage? …

An Analysis Of Level Of Activity As It Relates To Information Source And Two-Step Flow Of Communication In A Formal Organization, Carma Lois Wadley
Theses and Dissertations
There is a model of political communication which was developed by Elihu Katz and Paul F. Lazarsfeld, termed the two-step flow of communications theory, which this writer believes applies to the communication process of formal organizations. It is also the opinion of this writer that the two-step flow has a definite relation to the activity level of the members of the organization.
It will be the purpose of this study to look deeper into this problem. The specific formal organization discussed will be the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.
A study of this nature will have significance …
