Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In 1987, the Center for Archaeological Research entered into a contract with the San Antonio Metropolitan Transit Authority to provide consultant services for the downtown San Antonio Tri-Party Improvements project. Preliminary research was provided prior to initiation of construction, and monitoring was conducted during the three years of modifications to the downtown area. The archaeological resources exposed during the project were researched and documented, and recommendations were made throughout the construction period.

In June of 1988 and 1989, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an archaeological field school at the northern end of the plaza in front of the Alamo in downtown San Antonio. The Center for Archaeological Research cooperated with the university in organizing and staffing this field school. Excavations were limited to specific areas related to the fortifications around the main entrance to the Alamo constructed in 1835 and demolished and backfilled less than a year afterward. During the months of October and November, 1990, staff members and volunteers of the Center of Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), conducted surface survey, mapping, subsurface testing and private collection research at 41 BX 901 and surrounding areas. 41 BX 901 is an extensive prehistoric chert stone quarry in northeastern Bexar county, Texas. The site had been selected for construction of a new middle school by the Northeast Independent School District (NEISD). In October 1990, pursuant to a contract with the National Park Service, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, initiated test investigations in the southeast interior corner of the Mission Espada compound. The study focused on examining structural foundations and determining the depth of Mexican and Spanish colonial ground surfaces in the area.

Colonial period foundations were discovered under the south wall, as well as the probable original construction period surface and footing trench. 'IWentieth-century foundations were found in the unit excavated under the east wall. These likely continue south to the north wall of …

During early 1991, an archaeologist from The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), monitored the expansion of the Casa Rio Restaurant in downtown San Antonio. The expansion exposed, but did not damage, the foundation of the first Beckmann home constructed in 1859. Research for the property also revealed that the basement and support structures for the second Beckmann home probably exist within the parking lot immediately to the south of the expanded facility. No further historical work is required for this project but any future modifIcation to the area must address the critical …

In December 1990, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted limited test excavations at Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepcion de Acuna (41 BX 12) for the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The purpose of the excavations was to locate wall footings in the courtyard area, to increase the accuracy of maps from previous investigations so that future drainage and landscape work can proceed with greater confidence about where cultural material is located below the surface. A tract of land in northern San Antonio was briefly examined by the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Several prehistoric archaeological sites had previously been recorded and test excavated within or near the property. Remnants of two of those sites (41 EX 47 and 41 EX 231) within the study area were rediscovered and subjected to limited subsurface testing. At 41 EX 231, what are apparently well-preserved prehistoric cultural deposits were identified. Thus, it is recommended that additional intensive excavations be performed prior to any future disturbances at that site, or that …

On May 2, 1990, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archaeological investigation to locate the north wall of the compound of Mission Concepcion for the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain information in order to be able to project the north wall line and the west wall line and locate the original northwest comer which has been eliminated by street and utility construction.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) conducted archeological significance testing at Sites 41MU54, 41MU55, and 41MU57, which are within the right-of-way of proposed road FM 677 between Illinois Bend, a community in Montague County, Texas, and a proposed bridge crossing the Red River at a location south of Courtney, a community in Love County, Oklahoma.

As the construction will connect with a bridge that will be built with partial federal funding, the testing was undertaken under the guidelines of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and its implementing regulations, 36CFR, Part 800, and the National Environmental Policy Act.

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Excavations conducted at several sites in Antwerpen, a principal city and seaport on the Schelde River in northern Belgium, have uncovered a small but significant collection of glass beads. These range from a decorated specimen of the Roman period to tubular square- and star-sectioned beads of the 16th-17th centuries. The Post-Medieval specimens, found in the cesspits of merchants' homes, give us an idea of what Antwerpen was exporting during the early part of this period.

During the mid-19th century, some scholars believed that the chevron beads found in early Indian graves had been brought to North America by globe-trotting Phoenicians or representatives of some other higher European civilization. A paper on the subject published in 1862 by one of the theory's proponents is reproduced here, along with contemporary descriptions and illustrations of the beads under discussion.

Glass beads have long played an important role in the art and culture of Cameroon, a country situated on the east side of the Gulf of Guinea in West Central Africa. This article reviews the different kinds of drawn and wound glass beads that have found broad acceptance in west-central Cameroon and discusses their diverse applications. Beads of other materials, as well as cowries and buttons, are also dealt with.

A wide variety of glass beads poured into Central East Africa during the second half of the 19th century as explorers, missionaries and others made their way into the uncharted interior. Each kind had a name and value that, much to the chagrin of the travelers and present-day researchers, varied from one region to another. This article synthesizes what historical documentation reveals about some of the more significant beads in the trade with an eye to identifying the actual beads that are represented.

Natural history in Iowa prior to the 20th Century can be conveniently arranged into 4 phases: Native American, before the Louisiana Purchase, between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, and after 1850. Native American natural history was extensive and had a distinctly spiritual character. Natural history was a component of European exploration up to the time of the Louisiana Purchase, but was not treated as a separate endeavor; the evidence from this period comes from the journals and diaries of early exploreres, fur traders and the like. Specific surface area is a property used by earth scientists to estimate the proportion of expandable clay minerals in soils. In this study, specific surface area method is shown to compare favorably with standard clay mineralogical techniques in determining gross differences in expandable clay mineral content in tills. The results of over 100 measurements on till samples from Iowa indicate undifferentiated pre-Illinoian tills from southern and southwestern Iowa have the highest specific surface area values of Iowa tills (ranging from nearly 100 to greater than 150 m²/g) and Wisconsinan Dows Formation tills have the lowest average specific surface …

ExB ion traps, such as Fourier transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance mass spectrometers (FY:ICR), mass analyze sample ions based on differences in their cyclotron frequencies in a homogeneous magnetic field. The high resolution mass measurements of FT-ICR are based on the relationship between the frequency of the cyclotron orbit and the mass-to-charge (m/q) ratio of an ion. Both the orbit and the frequency/mass relationship result from the radial forces on the ion. Ions trapped by inhomogeneous electric fields experience different magnitudes of the radial electric fields at different positions resulting in a positionally dependent frequency. The vascular flora of Page County, Iowa, was studied from 1987 through 1991. Seven hundred forty two species and four hybrids of vascular plants were found. A quarter of the flora consists of non-native species. Taxa not previously reported in Iowa include: Amsinckia intermedia, Brassica kaber, Cardaria chalapensis, Callirhoe bushii, Carex mesochorea, Eleocharis xyridiformis, Euphorbia prostrata, Lactuca saligna, Leontodon autumnalis, Scirpus mucronatus, Sclerochloa dura, and Vernonia arkansana.

The Distribution Of Amphipods In Southeastern Minnesota And Their Relation To Water Quality And Land Use, James A. Muck, Raymond M. Newman

The distribution of the amphipods Gammarus pseudolimnaeus and Hyalella azteca was determined from 97 designated trout streams in Minnesota, along with temperature, conductivity, and nitrate levels. Streams were classified into 4 land use/geology groups. G. pseudolimnaeus was found in 11 counties and at 123 of 168 sites in 83 of the 97 streams sampled. Hyalella azteca was found in 7 counties at 26 sites m 21 streams. Spearman rank correlations showed a high degree of correlation between nitrate (range: 0-11 mg N/L), conductivity (range: 325-870 μS/cm), and geology. The relative abundance of G. pseudolimnaeus was negatively correlated with nitrate, geology …

Fens are peatlands which are dependent on groundwater discharge to provide nutrient enrichment. Fens are found in a variety of landscape positions and in most Iowa landform regions. This paper presents a classification system for Iowa fens based on landscape position, stratigraphy, and hydrologic factors. Iowa fens can be separated into six categories: 1) fens along valley wall slopes; the groundwater source for these fens is sand and gravel buried between glacial tills (inter-till); 2) fens in hummocky topography on the northwestern margin of the Des Moines Lobe landform region; the water source is sand and gravel buried within glacial …
