Completing The Missing Link: The Economic Impact Of I-495 On Southeastern Massachusetts, Glenn Miller
Completing The Missing Link: The Economic Impact Of I-495 On Southeastern Massachusetts, Glenn Miller
Bridgewater Review
The long-anticipated final link of Boston’s outer beltway, I-495, was opened in southeastern Massachusetts in November of 1982. South Shore residents who watched enviously as Rt. 128 and the North Shore experienced rapid economic growth and all the benefits (and possible drawbacks) of “high-tech” development, can now anticipate some of those changes in the area between Brockton and New Bedford. The catalyst, according to a wide range of indicators, is the completion of Rt. I-495.
It is generally accepted that access to a major highway provides the impetus for economic development and population growth. The full impact of circumferential beltways, …

Hsus Exposes Livestock Transportation Cruelty
Hsus Exposes Livestock Transportation Cruelty
Close Up Reports
After a massive investigation covering nine months, twenty states, and more than 20,000 miles, The HSUS has documented that every day and every night, thousands of cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, and other animals are being crowded, beaten, electrically shocked, trampled--or even killed--during miserable journeys that ultimately end at the slaughterhouses of this country.
Animals are injured during loading, then forced to negotiate dark truck interiors, steep ramps, narrow doorways, sharp turns, and slippery flooring. They are loaded so hurriedly that they knock down or climb onto those animals ahead of them and are crowded so tightly that they injure or …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Travel time used by the homemaker and spouse in 210 Utah families was analyzed according to the purpose of the travel, day of the week, geographic location, season of the year, age of children, educational level of homemaker and spouse, family income, and number of motor vehicles owned by the family for transportation purposes. Evaluation Of Metro Area Carpooling In Omaha, Ne, Michael Eskey
Evaluation Of Metro Area Carpooling In Omaha, Ne, Michael Eskey

The rising cost of transportation has become a major concern to Americans at every level of the economic ladder. Indeed, recent price hikes in gasoline have affected practically all other products. An optimistic America has watched the per-gallon price of gasoline rise by 400 percent in the last decade and now helplessly looks to the future $2.00 per-gallon fuel. The facts speak for themselves. We cannot stop the rising cost of transportation; we must cope with the rising cost of transportation.

Interim Analysis Of The Free-Fair Transit Experiments, A. Studenmund, S. Swan, D. Connor
Interim Analysis Of The Free-Fair Transit Experiments, A. Studenmund, S. Swan, D. Connor
A. H. Studenmund
This paper summarizes the early results of the two systemwide off-peak free-fare transit experiments being conducted in Trenton, New Jersey, and Denver, Colorado. These experiments, which are sponsored by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) under its Service and Methods Demonstration Program, are the first free-fare programs of such size and comprehensiveness. The demonstrations have already provided a number of interesting, if still tentative, conclusions. The first major conclusion is that, while free fare induces large and sustainable ridership gains (19 percent in Trenton and 34 percent in Denver), the general aggregate behavior of the population in making their modal …

Transportation And Public Service Costs For Rural Communities Of Various Sizes, Thomas L. Williams
Transportation And Public Service Costs For Rural Communities Of Various Sizes, Thomas L. Williams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lower real incomes in the agricultural sector compared with other sectors of the economy have led to continued migration of rural people to urban areas. Despite this movement of surplus people from farm areas, incomes in the rural sector have failed to keep pace with those in urban areas. Fewer social amenities and other conveniences have also contributed to rural-urban migration.
This reduction in rural population and the consequent reduction in the economic bases of many rural communities has raised some interesting questions about city and rural government consolidation. What sizes of cities should be encouraged in the rural areas, …

Green River Steamboating A Cultural History, 1828-1931, Helen Bartter Crocker
Green River Steamboating A Cultural History, 1828-1931, Helen Bartter Crocker
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In recent years, historians have displayed a growing interest in the cultural development of certain well-defined regions. Often a river valley inspired such a study, for example, R.E. Banta’s The Ohio, Thomas Clark’s The Kentucky and Harriette Arnow’s Seedtime on the Cumberland. These and many other river histories dealt less with the river itself than with its tendency to define and alter an area’s culture
This thesis, dealing with the culture of Green River’s steamboat era, is less about the steamboat or Green River than it is about their effect on river people. It searches the area’s homes, schools, business …
