Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas Apr 2019

Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas

Honors College Theses

Competition from imported seafood, low product prices, increasing operation costs, and other socio-economic factors are negatively affecting coastal Georgia’s commercial fishing industry. Fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) is extensive and gives them unique perspectives into the problems the industry is facing. Their perspectives differ from those of biologists or policymakers, making them useful for implementing good management policies that not only consider the scientific knowledge of a fishery, but the human aspect as well. This thesis used conducted semi-structured and card-sorting interviews with commercial Georgia fishermen in two fishing communities to learn about the problems they face and their unique …

Three Ways To Fix The Problems Caused By Rezoning Inner-City Industrial Land For Mixed-Use Apartments, Carl Grodach, Christopher R. Gibson, Justin O'Connor Jan 2019

Three Ways To Fix The Problems Caused By Rezoning Inner-City Industrial Land For Mixed-Use Apartments, Carl Grodach, Christopher R. Gibson, Justin O'Connor

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Since 2000, planning authorities in Australia have overseen a massive rezoning of inner-city industrial land to make way for mixed-use residential development. They claim central industrial space is obsolete in a post-industrial economy driven by knowledge, finance, and real estate. And rezoning offers opportunities to house people near jobs and services, thereby slowing urban sprawl. While industrial rezonings have contributed to the densification of Australian cities, they also open the door to real estate speculation and accelerate gentrification. This has forced many people to move outward in search of affordable shelter. Rather than fostering walkable 20-minute neighbourhoods, "ghost shops" haunt …

Increasing Parenting Knowledge: A Pilot Study, Kandice Olson Apr 2017

Increasing Parenting Knowledge: A Pilot Study, Kandice Olson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Research shows that parenting interventions make a significant difference in the lives of children with behavioral and emotional problems (de Graaf et al., 2008a; de Graaf et al., 2008b; Phaneuf & McIntyre, 2011; Roberts et al., 2006; Whittingham, Sofronoff, Sheffield, & Sanders, 2009). However, not all parents need intensive interventions. There is little research that has evaluated the effectiveness of a brief parenting handout intervention on parenting knowledge. The goal of this study was to determine if a brief informational handout about parenting increased parenting knowledge in college students. Students were asked to complete the pre-intervention survey that measured their …

The Next 50 Years Of Forensics: Acknowledging Problems, Preparing Solutions, Christopher P. Outzen, Lucas J. Youngvorst, Daniel Cronn-Mills

Daniel Cronn-Mills, Ph.D.

In previous decades, forensics was a well-respected co-curricular activity, with students becoming involved as early as middle school and moving into colleges across the country. The activity provides a multitude of meanings for individuals, teams, and colleges across the nation conjuring feelings of friendship, community, education, leadership, and competition. Many within the forensic community know the reputation of this activity can be attributed to influential individuals such as Grace Walsh, L. E. Norton, and Larry Schnoor, among others. Despite the great past and present of this activity, the future is looming with potential pitfalls that could damage the activity. We …

On The Classical Solvability Of Near Field Reflector Problems, Jiakun Liu, Neil Trudinger

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper we prove the existence of classical solutions to near field reflector problems, both for a point light source and for a parrallel light source, with planar recievers. These problems involve monge-Ampere type equations, subject to nonlinear oblique boundary conditions. Our approach builds on earlier work in the optimal transportation case by Trudinger and Wang and makes use of a recent extension of degree theory to oblique boundary conditioins by Li, Liu and Nguyen.

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: Molly is one form of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) that is touted to be more pure and potentially less harmful than other forms, such as ecstasy. Media reports and case studies suggest that this drug is popular among college students and is related to adverse health problems. The current study sought to address the knowledge gaps about Molly by examining whether users differ in substance use outcomes and sensation seeking than nonusers. Specifically, this study tested whether Molly users engaged in heavier use of other substances and experienced more substance-related harms in general than nonusers. Further, the current study investigated whether …

Para-Expertise, Tacit Knowledge, And Writing Problems, Jenny Rice Nov 2015

Para-Expertise, Tacit Knowledge, And Writing Problems, Jenny Rice

Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies Faculty Publications

My office is on the thirteenth floor of an eighteen-story concrete tower that sits in the heart of campus. The building is so massively disproportionate to other buildings that it looms over the entire campus. Inside, the hallways are long and narrow, with no windows or natural light. A bank of six large elevators takes up the center space of each floor. Perhaps it is not surprising that this office tower has become the source of campus lore and legends among students and faculty. During my first semester on campus, a student asked if I knew the history of my …

Few distressed young people seek professional psychological help for either personal-emotional problems or suicidal ideation. This paper describes two studies that have examined help-seeking patterns in two contrasting high school populations. Two hundred and sixty four Il1awarra public high school students and 307 Queensland private high school students completed a questionnaire measuring intentions to seek help from a variety of fonnal and informal sources, in addition to no-one for personal-emotional and suicidal problems. Students in both samples indicated they would seek help from different sources of help for different problem types, but friends were rated as the most likely source …

Social Marketing Ethical Dilemmas: Pursuing Practical Solutions For Pressing Problems, Lynne Eagle, Stephan Dahl, Stacy M. Carter, David Low Jan 2015

Social Marketing Ethical Dilemmas: Pursuing Practical Solutions For Pressing Problems, Lynne Eagle, Stephan Dahl, Stacy M. Carter, David Low

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

We discuss calls, and apparent support, for ethical resources to support social marketing practitioners, in the light of research findings from a study of actual ethical dilemmas encountered by social marketing practitioners and resources used to resolve them. We highlight nine key ethical challenges facing social marketers, and highlight the prominence of social marketers' concerns about funders' influence on social marketing activity. The low use of existing general resources indicates the need for social marketing- focussed resources, the need to ensure that any resources developed offer practical decision-making support rather than broad general principles, and the need to advocate for …

Flourishing, Languishing And Moderate Mental Health: Prevalence And Change In Mental Health During Recovery From Drug And Alcohol Problems, Breanna Mcgaffin, Frank P. Deane, Peter James Kelly, Joseph Ciarrochi

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

The aim was to explore the utility of Keyes' concept of mental health in a substance addiction context. Mental health is considered the presence of emotional wellbeing in conjunction with high levels of social and psychological functioning. Using Keyes' measure, the frequency of languishing and flourishing is compared between clients who became abstinent and those continuing to use substances following treatment. It was hypothesised that there would be a significant interaction between substance use and levels of mental health over time. Participants were 794 individuals (79.5% male) attending residential substance abuse treatment provided by The Australian Salvation Army. The current …

On The Uniqueness Of Lp-Minkowski Problems: The Constant P-Curvature Case In R^3, Yong Huang, Jiakun Liu, Lu Xu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We study the C4 smooth convex bodies K ⊂Rn+1 satisfying K(x) =u(x)1−p, where x ∈Sn, K is the Gauss curvature of ∂K, u is the support function of K, and p is a constant. In the case of n =2, either when p ∈[−1, 0] or when p ∈(0, 1) in addition to a pinching condition, we show that K must be the unit ball. This partially answers a conjecture of Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang about the uniqueness of the Lp-Minkowski problem in R3. Moreover, we give an explicit pinching constant depending only on p when p ∈(0, 1).

Copyright 2014, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 2014. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), lists concealment as one of the symptoms of a gambling disorder. However, some transactions are more likely to leave permanent records of gambling transactions (credit, consumer loyalty schemes) than others (cash, Internet cash, Internet cafes, prepaid phones). An online survey of 815 participants recruited through newspaper and online sites elicited consumer preferences for a variety of transactions and communication media. Hierarchical multiple regression accounted for age, gender, housing status, and involvement in gambling before considering relationships between consumer preferences and scores on …

'Do More, Smoke Less!' Harm Reduction In Action For Smokers With Mental Health/Substance Use Problems Who Cannot Or Will Not Quit, Amanda Baker, Robin Callister, Peter Kelly, Kypros Kypri

Peter Kelly

Although smoking rates among mental health/substance abusing populations are very high, the focus of treatment and research has tended to be on substances other than tobacco.A range of harm-reduction strategies is needed, including long-term nicotine maintenance, smokeless tobacco and ‘clean’ nicotine products. For those who cannot or will not quit, assistance in reducing smoking should be given. Interventions for smoking among people with mental health/substance use problems may best be delivered by addressing multiple health-risk behaviours, especially physical activity, around the same time.
