Oil And Iranian Development, Alireza Emami May 1980

Oil And Iranian Development, Alireza Emami

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The main concern of this study was two-fold: (a) to compute the Iranian economy's long-run growth potential consistent with full-capacity utilization of the output and stocks with the existing current and capital account matrices; and (b) to simulate the impacts that changing petroleum export levels have on capital formation, employment, and income distribution.

The analysis proceeded by developing a closed dynamic interindustry model in order to compute the "turnpike" growth rate. The uniform or "turnpike" growth rate computed for the base current and capital account matrices was 1.7 percent per annum. This describes the long-run growth potential for Iran. Given …

We present in this issue of The Cairo Papers a broad spectrum of articles dealing with the children of Egypt and their families; each article has a research base in the real world of childhood and each in its own way suggests trends for further work in both research and applied areas in child development. Ciaccio's paper consists of an integrated set of recommendations based on action-oriented research sponsored by UNICEF- it is clear from a reading of his paper that the International Year of The Child is not simply another 'UN year' but rather a point of departure from …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Impacts Of Oil Shale Development On The Economy Of The Uintah Basin, David Zachary Kaufman May 1978

An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Impacts Of Oil Shale Development On The Economy Of The Uintah Basin, David Zachary Kaufman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The development of oil shale resources will have a significant impact on the Uintah Basin in Utah. To analyze this impact, this study used a regionalized imput-output model. The input-output table for the State of Utah was revised to fit the Uintah Basin, using the RAS technique.

The scarcity of water in the Basin may cause a shift of water use from irrigated agriculture to oil shale. This reduction in agricultural production was estimated, using demand curves for water in agriculture and an intergen programming model which generated minimum water requirements for shale developments from 25,000 barrels per day to …

Longitudinal Patterns Of Centralization And Development: Testing Theories Of Governmental Organization, Dale Krane Apr 1978

Longitudinal Patterns Of Centralization And Development: Testing Theories Of Governmental Organization, Dale Krane

Public Administration Faculty Publications

In attempting to cope with the challenges of modernization, government officials are urged by specialists in development and comparative administration to manipulate the organization of public activity. Prescriptions for altering the public sector usually advocate one of two simple but contradictory options: centralization or decentralization. Adopting one or the other of these administrative arrangements reputedly yields important benefits which have system-wide impact on the course of development.1 Unfortunately, no a priori principle exists to guide the choice between these sharply divergent alternatives. The present study was designed to compare the consequences of these organizational strategies in order to evaluate …

The seminar from which these papers flow was the product of many minds, multiple energies and much co-operation during the many months prior to its final implementation. The idea of a women's seminar oriented to the issues and concerns of contemporary Egyptian society was initially put forth in the fal I of 1974 to coincide with efforts that were developing on a national level in Egypt to commemorate 1975 as International Women's Year. It is with deepest gratitude that I extend special appreciation to Mrs. Marlene Michel Anawati, then a Post Master's Fellow in the Department of SociologyAnthropology and Psychology. …

Courts, Church-State Relationships, Water And Timber Development, And Land Policies: Major Sources Of Conflict In Utah's Territorial Years, James Wayne Mecham

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the settlement of the West, the Mormon response was unique. since their methods, techniques, and institutions differed from other settlers of the West, the Mormons were repeatedly censured by outsiders. Although the institution of polygamy elicited considerable emotionalism and aroused determined opposition, there were other institutions which actually contributed just as much to the conflagration.

As the Utah War [1857-58] became an embarrassment to the United States government, congress demanded of President Buchanan the grounds upon which the decision for war was based. President Buchanan thereupon presented several letters, the first of which was written on October 3, 1856, …

Comparative Regional Integration And Development: A Substantive And Methodological Inquiry, Andrew Nelson White Jan 1972

Comparative Regional Integration And Development: A Substantive And Methodological Inquiry, Andrew Nelson White

Honors Papers

The analysis of communities as optimum sub-societal aggregates, and their distribution and organization in terms of regional groupings is the focus of this paper and of the research undertaken. Developing nations have constantly to cope with nature and effective implementation of their development plans as they strive to add a measure of productivity and progress to their names while trying to overcome the chronic internal problems of overpopulation, underutilization of resources, unemployment, hunger and poor health and education. It is argued here that only by considering the most regular and common units of differentiated yet organized living, that communities represent, …

Development And Control Of Licking Behavior In The Guinea Pig (Cavia Porcellus), Jack R. Alvord

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Four non-licking guinea pigs were reinforced with water for successive approximations to licking an operandum feeder. Once all subjects had obtained their total liquid intake for a three-week period by licking, an optimum deprivation schedule was determined.

Fixed ratio and variable interval schedules were found to affect licking behavior of the guinea pig in a similar way as with the rat, mean lick rate of guinea pigs being slightly lower than that of the rat. Precise control over the onset and offset of licking was demonstrated through discrimination training.

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research and development (R&D) play an increasingly important role in the economy of the United States. Total expenditures for R&D during the decade of the 1950's were greater than in the entire history of the United States previous to that time. As a percent of gross national product, R&D has grown from 0.2 percent in 1921, to 0.4 to 0.6 percent in the 1930's and 1940's, and is now more than 3 percent.1

Much has been said of the impact that the growth of R&D has on the general economy. R&D had also had a significant economic and sociocultural …

Chinese agriculture differs from the Western agriculture in the development and utilization of agricultural science on the fields. China has always been an agricultural country, but she failed to improve in techniques of cultivation as the time passed by. The land, prior to the Communist take-over, was owned and cultivated by individuals and the produce was sold in a free-market. Unfortunately, the Chinese government, prior to 1949, failed to bring about adequate agricultural reforms and implement economic development measures.

As a result an overwhelming proportion of the population of China is occupied on the land, the supply of which is …

Some Effects Of Modern Weapons Systems Development On The American Economy, Maurice Braginsky May 1964

Some Effects Of Modern Weapons Systems Development On The American Economy, Maurice Braginsky

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Cold War goes on! And the use of military strength by the United States as a backdrop to other forms of persuation--political, ideological, diplomatic, and economic--continues. The use of a military backdrop as an instrument of national policy will probably continue indefinitely because it is unlikely that the Soviet Union or Communist China will change their objectives of expansionism; it is too much an integral part of their ideology. The easing of tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union since the Cuban crisis in 1962 is perhaps an indication of a change in tactics and diplomacy, but …
