Proposed Charlotte To Atlanta High-Speed Passenger Rail Line: An Economic, Infrastructural, And Developmental Analysis In The Upstate Of South Carolina, Ian C. Macurda, Kimberly Whitehead
SC Upstate Research Symposium
This research paper is an in-depth analysis of the high-speed passenger rail line proposed between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA and its impact on the economy, infrastructure, and future development of the Upstate of South Carolina. Currently, passenger rail service between Charlotte and Atlanta is offered on Amtrak at late hours throughout the night on its long-distance passenger rail line The Crescent from New York City, NY to New Orleans, LA. The train is often delayed and is operating at a deficit for Amtrak, like most of their long-distance routes. Traffic on Interstate 85 through the Upstate is another issue …
Whither India’S Development: Toward Being A Super Power Or A Super Civilization?, Pradip Khandwalla
Whither India’S Development: Toward Being A Super Power Or A Super Civilization?, Pradip Khandwalla
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This commentary was triggered by my reading a lecture delivered by Saurabh Kumar, a former student of mine at Indian Institute of Management, who later served as India’s ambassador in various countries and international bodies. He bemoaned that China had much greater status in global affairs than India. Many others in India hanker for a super power status for India. I find this concern to be somewhat misguided. India should be aiming to be a great civilization, rather than a domineering superpower. The record of all the superpowers till now has been quite spotty in humane terms. My vision for …

Doing Business And Contributing To Conflict Prevention And Development In Ghana, Abdul Karim Issifu, Musa Essuman, Felix Dade
Doing Business And Contributing To Conflict Prevention And Development In Ghana, Abdul Karim Issifu, Musa Essuman, Felix Dade
Journal of Global Business Insights
While some scholars argue that companies implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) for altruistic reasons, to gain an advantage over rivals in the industry, to enhance corporate reputation, and to be seen as ethical for addressing environmental and socio-economic difficulties, other scholars view CSR as unnecessary. These scholars argue that CSR initiatives adversely affect corporate profits. The understanding of this phenomenon remains incomplete, especially with the lack of empirical understanding about why corporate bodies execute CSR in spite of their primary goal of maximizing profits. To better understand this gap in knowledge, this case study of the Newmont Ghana Gold Limited …
The Production Of Docility In Professional Ice Hockey, Andre Michael Andrijiw, Luke Jones
The Production Of Docility In Professional Ice Hockey, Andre Michael Andrijiw, Luke Jones
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
The social relations and practices that imbue the sport of ice hockey have prompted several limiting and problematic outcomes for athletes. Concerned by such outcomes, and informed by the anatomo-politics of French poststructuralist philosopher Michel Foucault (1991), an examination into the relations of power that govern North American professional ice hockey was undertaken. The examination revealed that athletes were routinely subject to disciplinary power and a commonplace set of practices that closely resemble Foucault’s (1991) ‘means of correct training’: managers, in partnership with coaches under their remit, choreographed and engaged in constant supervision (e.g., scouting and monitoring), organized highly ritualized …

The Effect Of Mental Exercises To Develop Some Mental Abilities Among Students Of The Third Stage Of Football Law, Saadah Hasanain Abdulmunem, Saba Mohamed Hamid, Mohamed Ashour Abbas
Journal of STEPS for Humanities and Social Sciences
The problem of the research was manifested through research, observation and field experiment, because the researchers are academic judges and specialists. It was found that the errors that occur during lectures when explaining the football law are related to (mental) variables, so the study aimed to influence the use of specialized mental exercises to develop some mental abilities of the third stage students in The football subject, in addition to knowing its effect on the study variables, while the researchers hypothesized that mental exercises positively affect the development of some mental abilities for third-year students in the subject of football. …
Marketing, Development, And The Question Of Meaning, Dominique Bouchet
Marketing, Development, And The Question Of Meaning, Dominique Bouchet
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Originally developed as a sales technique, marketing ended up playing an economic and political role globally. With the advent of globalization and sustainability issues, the importance given to the techniques of marketing in both analyses and in communication limits the possibility of mutual understanding and of social creativity. A profound understanding of what is at stake for society and culture is not what matters when the focus is on the ways to maintain the superficial link to the instrument of power.
The market plays a central role within the fields of marketing, economics and politics. Yet, questions of what the …

Wellness Practices’ Contribution To Social Sustainability: A Review Of The Literature, Zeina Mazloum
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
Despite being emphasized as one of the main pillars of global sustainable development, social sustainability has been vastly neglected in research, and its importance has been undervalued. This paper aims to highlight the important role that wellness practices play in enhancing social sustainability by uplifting individuals and progressing communities. In turn, social sustainability strengthens the circular economy, resulting in global sustainable development. The paper also raises questions about future sustainable communities, quality of life, and wellness programs, which open up new avenues for future research and implications.

Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John
Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Canadian banks have been important components of an imperialist system since at least the 19th century. However, their long and rich history of operating as purely exploitative entities in the English-speaking Caribbean region is often overlooked— leading to many incomplete and conflicting narratives about Canada’s role within the global system. I argue that Canada is an imperial actor that exerts agency in supporting a Canadian banking oligopoly both within Canada and in the English-speaking Caribbean. Insufficient attention is given to these Canadian banks, especially considering the power they have wielded in the Caribbean over the centuries. By analyzing the …

Impact Of Electricity On Industrial Output In Nigeria: A Systems Perspective, Chidi Vincent Ike
Impact Of Electricity On Industrial Output In Nigeria: A Systems Perspective, Chidi Vincent Ike
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lack of access to electricity, both in quantity and quality, has been a recurring problem in Nigeria. Scholars have investigated the relationship between electricity consumption and economic development with diverse outcomes, but they have not considered the subsystems that constitute the electricity delivery system. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between monthly industrial output in Nigeria and available monthly power generation capacity, available monthly power transmission capacity, and monthly power distribution capability. Systems theory was the theoretical framework for this study. Data were collected on the monthly industrial output and operational data on electric …

Overcoming The Systemic Challenges Of Wealth Inequality In The U.S., David Peter Stroh
Overcoming The Systemic Challenges Of Wealth Inequality In The U.S., David Peter Stroh
The Foundation Review
The galvanizing public murder of George Floyd and the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black and Hispanic people have put structural racism and its influence on wealth inequality in the U.S. into stark relief. As multiracial groups express outrage at these visible disparities, we risk missing the other side of the coin: that wealth inequality in turn fans structural racism. Moreover, as they reinforce each other, these two factors erode the social, economic, and political viability of our democracy. Understanding and then breaking this vicious cycle are essential to realizing our renewed commitment to a country that works everyone.

Assessment Centers, Tara Myers, Megan Paul
Assessment Centers, Tara Myers, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
What are assessment centers? Assessment centers measure knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics by assessing participants’ responses to job-related simulations. Assessment centers can be used for hiring, placement, and career and skill development (Gaugler, Rosenthal, Thornton, and Bentson, 1987). Typically, participants complete a combination of in-basket, leaderless group discussion, role play, case analysis, and oral presentation exercises (Hoffman, Kennedy, LoPilato, Monahan, and Lance, 2015). Within each exercise, participants review job-relevant information and complete tasks. For the in-basket, participants are presented with documents (e.g., emails, memos, reports, requests—things that might be in an inbox) to which they provide responses and about …
