Databases A To Free: Open Access Databases' Presence On The Databases A To Z Page, Vickie Montigaud-Green, Taylor Baugher

Presentations

Starting with the premise that most academic libraries have a Libguides Database A-Z, our poster explains the metacognitive exercise in evaluating our Database A-Z list and adding open-source/ government databases. We realized that after graduation, our students would no longer have access to expensive journals and databases; and, our goal was to provide students with free academic standard options that they would continue to use in their post-graduation lives.

‘Theses’ Going To Be Good!: A How To Guide On Dealing With Large Complex Cataloging Projects, Paul Daybell, Becky Skeen, Liz Woolcott, Melanie Shaw, Seth Westernburg

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Utah State University Libraries undertook a complete barcoding and cataloging of their Theses and Dissertations. Due to irregular cataloging policies, only 1/3 of the collection had been cataloged. Using a workflow-driven approach, the cataloging team of student technicians and catalogers used a combination of automations, batch processing, and a relational database to pull existing record information and build new, improved records. Presenters will discuss the process developed, the tools that were used, and the outcomes of the project.

Have you ever wished you could limit your Connexion batch search results to the one OCLC record with the most holdings? Or hoped for a way to confidently match those search results to existing metadata from your ILS without handling each record one by one? These tasks and more are all possible by working directly with the Microsoft Access database underlying Connexion's local save file. In this presentation, I will share how our library used this functionality in a workflow for efficiently cataloging a gift collection of jazz LPs. I will describe features of the local save file database, highlighting …

Improving The Prioritization Process Of Uxo Lao, Hayashi Ontoku Akihito Jan 2020

Improving The Prioritization Process Of Uxo Lao, Hayashi Ontoku Akihito

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Prioritization of clearance activities continues to be a central issue in the unexploded ordnance (UXO) sector in Laos. Although the government set a policy on prioritization, it has not functioned well as a guide for operators to prioritize their tasks. The majority of operators tended to prioritize their operations based on their past experiences. This has resulted in uncertainty about how to prioritize clearance operations and has led to a strong demand from stakeholders for greater transparency. UXO Lao, the national clearance operator, has implemented a trial to introduce a clear planning and prioritization process for operations in order to …

English Semantic Feature Production Norms: An Extended Database Of 4436 Concepts, Erin M. Buchanan, K.D. Valentine, Nicholas P. Maxwell

Student Publications

A limiting factor in understanding memory and language is often the availability of large numbers of stimuli to use and explore in experimental studies. In this study, we expand on three previous databases of concepts to over 4000 words including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and other parts of speech. Participants in the study were asked to provide lists of features for each concept presented (a semantic feature production task), which were combined with previous research in this area. These feature lists for each concept were then coded into their root word form and affixes (i.e., cat and s for cats) …

Regional Textile Production: Mapping The Pacific Northwest Fiber Network, Caroline Vogl

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Inspired by the slow food movement, more people have started to question the source of their clothing and textiles due to the environmental and human rights abuses in the current global fashion industry. The Pacific Northwest in particular is a place where questions about textile production and sourcing have been raised and where many textile farmers, retailers and makers already exist. Currently there are many gaps in production and a lack of connection between the various players in this regional economy. The first step in creating a stronger regionally-based fiber economy is to connect the participants in this economy. To …

Large Expert-Curated Database For Benchmarking Document Similarity Detection In Biomedical Literature Search, Peter Brown, Relish Consortium, Yaoqi Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were …

Making Armenian Politically Exposed Persons’ Money Public: A Data-Driven Journalism Project That Aims To Create A Database Of Armenian Mps’ Assets, Ani Hovhannisyan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This data-driven journalism project tackles an age-old problem that seems common in virtually every government around the world: governmental officials hiding assets. By applying the theory of social responsibility, this paper uses data-journalism methods to trace the full financial assets of Armenian members of parliament and eventually making those assets and income declarations available via an interactive website to the Armenian public as well as other journalists throughout the country and region.
