James Mellick, a retired Cedarville University Professor of Studio Art, recently won a $200,000 grand prize for his art exhibition “Wounded Warrior Dogs” at ArtPrize, an international art competition, held annually in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

More than 1,450 artists from 44 different countries attended ArtPrize, but Mellick’s exhibit captured the attention of thousands of visitors. Mellick, of Milford Center, Ohio, won “People’s Choice Best in Show” and “Best in 3D” categories.

High school students who want to get an early start on college—and save money in the process—are participating in the Ohio Department of Education’s College Credit Plus (CCP) program. For colleges, like Cedarville University, partnering with CCP helps bring high-academic students to campus after their high school graduation.

Cedarville University has been participating with the College Credit Plus program since 2015. An estimated 45 percent of high school students taking Cedarville course enroll after they complete their high school requirements. And, statewide, more than 52,000 Ohio high school students participated in the program, saving $110 million on college tuition.

Cedarville University’s solar boat racing team, which has won nine world solar splash titles, hopes to build its next boat so that it will “fly on water.”

Leading this effort for Cedarville are former solar boat team members Elijah Thompson and Caleb Jacobson, both 2016 mechanical engineering graduates. They and four other engineering students submitted a 20-page technical article introducing their recent breakthrough in hydrofoil design to the International Hydrofoil Society. Cedarville University’s human biology students are excelling nationally. Last year, Cindy Wingert, assistant professor of biology, administered the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society’s (HAPS) exam for her Human Structure and Function class. Wingert’s class achieved such a high average score that they ranked at the 99 percentile nationally.

The HAPS comprehensive exam was established in June of 1993 as a standardized assessment form for two semester undergraduate anatomy and physiology courses.
