Xenia Students Benefit From New Education Approach, Mark D. Weinstein

Through a new collaborative educational partnership with the Xenia community, Cedarville University is changing the way it prepares future teachers. And the immediate benefactor is Xenia City Schools.
The new teacher education program places teacher candidates and university professors in Xenia classrooms at the same time, allowing students to deepen their teaching skills, while also taking college courses. The program also assigns student teachers to elementary, middle and high schools for their field experience, while receiving college instruction at the same time.

Cedarville University students are mentoring young people who need a second chance in life. Through a connection forged by Cedarville University’s Global Outreach office, college students are spending 90 minutes a week interacting and mentoring youth in the Greene County Juvenile Detention and Treatment Center in Xenia, Ohio.

Five Cedarville University professors will be recognized in the December issue of the "Ohio Magazine" as “Excellence in Education” honorees. Each December, the publication recognizes faculty members across the state for their outstanding achievements in higher education.
The honorees include Rebecca Gryka, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences; Marc Clauson, Ph.D., professor of history and law; Mark Gathany, Ph.D., associate professor of biology; Tim Norman, Ph.D., professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering; and Michelle Wood, Ph.D., associate professor of English.

Cedarville University’s Schools of Pharmacy and Nursing have joined forces to serve the veteran population in the Miami Valley. Students from both schools have formed an organization, the Veterans Outreach Committee, to treat and educate local veterans. The organization will hold its inaugural event on Nov. 14 from 6-8p.m. at the Veteran’s Day Summit in Xenia.

Starting a new ministry takes a significant amount of work, but for Cedarville University students Adrienne Krater and Claire Hoyt, taking part in a worldwide relief effort that brings hope and Christmas gifts to children makes all of the effort worthwhile. This fall, the two sophomores formed a new global outreach ministry on campus to support the work of Operation Christmas Child.
