Negotiating Transportation Insecurity: Local Responses And Coping Strategies In San José, Ca, Andrew Ng, Melissa Beresford

People rely on transportation every day to access food, work, and social activities. Transportation insecurity—the lack of regular access to adequate transportation—can therefore cause significant disruptions to livelihoods. Understanding how people experience transportation insecurity in metropolitan areas may contribute to building better transportation systems and help formulate ways to alleviate persistent and underlying transportation issues. In this study, the researchers interviewed San José residents who experience transportation insecurity to better understand their experiences and identify the major ways that they cope with lack of adequate transportation. From classrooms to museums, and even private collections, 3D digital models of artifacts can pave the way for a more inclusive and accessible future for archaeology. This thesis looks specifically at how photogrammetry and digital modeling can increase the accessibility and utility of artifact collections housed at the Rollins College Archaeology Lab. It focuses on how we can best preserve these collections while also increasing access to academics, researchers, and the general public alike. By digitizing over 50 models, I created an online repository for these artifacts on Sketchfab (https://sketchfab.com/rollins_archaeology), as well as a step-by-step guide to photogrammetry. Unlike the exploitative supply chains that exist under neoliberal globalization, where the social conditions of their supply chain are largely hidden; fair trade attempts to reveal the conditions of their supply chains through transparent marketing practices. Transparency is often presented in the form of storytelling wherein fair trade organizations (FTOs) reveal intimate details of the artisans they partner with to educate consumers on the interrelations of their product supply chains. This article reflects on the roles anthropologists have played in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, and identifies the challenges – from the methodological to the political – they faced in fulfilling these roles. Drawing on the author's personal and professional experiences in the country, as well as on interviews with other anthropologists, this article identifies three major roles for anthropologists: conducting ethnographic research; bearing witness to the pandemic through first-person accounts; and engaging various publics.
