Interest-Major Fit And Satisfaction: Extending Theories Of Occupational Fit To Predict Academic Outcomes, Sneha Kamath Apr 2023

Interest-Major Fit And Satisfaction: Extending Theories Of Occupational Fit To Predict Academic Outcomes, Sneha Kamath

Honors Projects

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2008), only 58% of students enrolled in a four-year bachelor’s degree program between 1995 and 1996 had successfully completed their degree by 2001 (Allen & Robbins, 2010). Some studies examining the frequency with which students change their major during their undergraduate education also offer insight into the potential reasons underlying the delayed graduation rates observed in Allen and Robbins’ (2010) study; for instance, a study by the U.S. Department of Education (2017) found that within three years of enrollment, about 30% of students pursuing a bachelor’s or associate’s degree had changed their …

An Autoethnographic Reflection From Two Black Women Ph.D.’S And Their White Woman Advisor On The Use And Impact Of Sista Circle Methodology In The Dissertation Process, B. Nathan, Rashida Love, Laurie A. Carlson Jan 2023

An Autoethnographic Reflection From Two Black Women Ph.D.’S And Their White Woman Advisor On The Use And Impact Of Sista Circle Methodology In The Dissertation Process, B. Nathan, Rashida Love, Laurie A. Carlson

The Qualitative Report

Black Women doctoral students experience the journey as “outsiders within” (Collins, 1986), navigating how to excel and thrive while being on the margins (hooks, 1991). The authors of this manuscript reflect upon the impact of adopting a culturally relevant methodology and method, integrating various forms of Black Women’s art, and challenging tenets of traditional western research. An auto-ethnographic exercise illuminated the critical need for Nathan and Love to insert their Black Womanhood into their dissertation research process using Sista Circle Methodology, an active decision to decolonize research. Carlson provided a critical link to ensuring Nathan and Love graduated and provides …

Code-Switching And Advising In Multilingual African Situations: An Analysis Of Radio Phone-In Programmes In Kenya And Cameroon, Billian Khalayi Otundo, Susanne Mühleisen Jan 2022

Code-Switching And Advising In Multilingual African Situations: An Analysis Of Radio Phone-In Programmes In Kenya And Cameroon, Billian Khalayi Otundo, Susanne Mühleisen

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

Radio phone-in programmes are relevant for linguistic analysis in multilingual contexts, like Kenya and Cameroon, because they provide relatively natural data in expert-user and user-user contexts in an often emotional interactive environment. Any topic on relationships is an emotive undertaking in any society given the varied cultural disparities. In radio phone-in programmes, speech activities such as advice-giving and advice-receiving are also performed symmetrically or asymmetrically. In this media format, code-switching is a highly important phenomenon that is an expected and unconscious part of the linguistic behaviour of multilingual speakers. Switches between languages are highly relevant since they provide evidence for …

Toward A Student-Ready Cybersecurity Program: Findings From A Survey Of Stem-Students, Lora Pitman, Brian K. Payne, Tancy Vandecar-Burdin, Lenora Thorbjornsen

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

As the number of available cybersecurity jobs continues to grow, colleges strive to offer to their cybersecurity students an environment which will make them sufficiently prepared to enter the workforce after graduation. This paper explores the academic and professional needs of STEM-students in various higher education institutions across Virginia and how cybersecurity programs can cater to these needs. It also seeks to propose an evidence-based approach for improving the existing cybersecurity programs so that they can become more inclusive and student-ready. A survey of 251 college students in four higher-education institutions in Virginia showed that while there are common patterns …

Assessment Of Strengths-Based Interventions On First-Year Medical Students, Linnette C. G. White May 2021

Assessment Of Strengths-Based Interventions On First-Year Medical Students, Linnette C. G. White

Ed.D. Dissertations

In the quest for a doctoral degree many candidates fail to meet their milestone accomplishment. It is estimated that approximately 30% of individuals who pursue a doctoral degree will not finish. Medical school has been found to be a very intensive program to pursue for many who begin the journey. Despite its difficulty, 81.6% to 84.1% of medical students achieve the status of medical practitioner, within a three-to-four year program. Despite the seemingly high completion rate, the achievement gap has further implications on physician shortages. The researcher conducted a quantitative study to determine the impact training first-year medical students using …

Group Development For Transformational Change: Co-Creating And Co-Developing An Efficient Peer Advisor Team At San Diego State University Using The Group Analysis System Bart And Feminist Leadership, Delia Contreras

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

Current leadership development programs often neglect the development of group leadership, especially when working with a culturally diverse group. The purpose of this study was to enhance my ability to lead a group of student advisors currently enrolled in the Counseling and Social Change Program at San Diego State University. The data gathering process included surveys, a review of documents, a formal peer advisor training, and a reflective focus group. Through this process and grounded in feminist and group relations theory I worked both with the student advisors and the director of the program to develop a successful team dynamic. …

Reaping The Benefits Of Mentors And Trusted Advisors, Carol A. Watson, Kristina L. Hiedringhaus, Caroline Osborne

Caroline L. Osborne

This program delved into the benefits you can gain from cultivating a network of mentors and trusted advisors. Participants learned how to find their own mentor or advisor, how to build that relationship, why more than one mentor or advisor may be helpful, and why you are never too old (or experienced) to need a mentor. Participants had a hands-on opportunity to create their own mentorship plan by defining what they need from a mentor, how to find someone who can fulfill those needs, and how to begin developing that relationship.

Students’ Relationships With First-Year Advisors And The Transition To Faculty Advisors: A Qualitative Study Of Appreciative Advising And Its Effects On College Students., Robert Mclean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study investigated questions that were created to (a) help improve the quality of academic advising within professional advising and faculty advising at a public university in the Midwest as well as (b) provide additional support to the importance of Appreciative Advising in the advising role and in student services. The theoretical framework for this thesis was Appreciative Education also known as Appreciative Inquiry and Appreciative Advising (Bloom, Hutson, He & Konkle, 2013). Student testimonials were gauged through face-to-face, one-on-one interviews to analyze students’ interactions with their professional and faculty academic advisors and to determine which connections with their …

Ethicality Of Advisor Motives In Academic Advising: Faculty, Staff, And Student Perspectives, Xiafei Xue Dec 2016

Ethicality Of Advisor Motives In Academic Advising: Faculty, Staff, And Student Perspectives, Xiafei Xue

MSU Graduate Theses

Advising is an important aspect in academic settings. While the literature has emphasized better academic advising, including the personal qualities of good advisors, there has been little emphasis on ethical issues and ethical concerns related to advisors' roles or positions. The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) provides a set of core values to guide ethical behavior. The current study examined (in an experimental design) faculty, staff, and student perspectives regarding advisors' more ethical, neutral, or less ethical behaviors. Results indicated that there were no significant differences between faculty and staff. All groups could differentiate between ethical and unethical extremes, but …

Rethinking Advising: Developing A Proactive Culture To Improve Retention, Amber Settle, John Glatz Oct 2011

Rethinking Advising: Developing A Proactive Culture To Improve Retention, Amber Settle, John Glatz

Amber Settle

In 2009 DePaul University’s College of Computing and Digital Media (DePaul CDM) discovered a significant lag in undergraduate retention rates as well as four, five and six-year graduation rates as compared to other major colleges at the university. DePaul CDM’s investment in online student service resources had over time caused the unintentional reinvention of the college advising office into one that supported a very limited number of students, focusing primarily on students either in academic distress or students nearing graduation.
In an effort to modify the advising culture at DePaul CDM into a more proactive one, a strategic student service …

The Spectre Of Class: Educating And Advising For Self-Efficacy, Mikaila Arthur Dec 2009

The Spectre Of Class: Educating And Advising For Self-Efficacy, Mikaila Arthur

Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur

In her essay “The Spectre of Class: Educating and Advising for Self-Efficacy” Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur discusses the importance of building student self-efficacy. However, as Arthur points out, creating an environment where students believe in their capabilities to learn and perform at a particular level is deeply influenced by one’s class background. As Arthur states, “These students have grown up in a culture that values individualism and places responsibility for success and blame for failure squarely on the shoulders of each person.” Arthur speaks more generally about creating self-efficacy and offers insight in how to maneuver around and transcend the …

Engaging Students In Writing Labs: An Empirical Study Of Reading And Commenting On Student Papers, Joyce Adams

Faculty Publications

Writing Center literature fails to come to a consensus on whether students or tutors should read student papers during tutorials. This empirical study sought to discover whether the choice of reader and the timing of the tutors’ comments affected the engagement of the student in the tutorial. The study explored six patterns of reading and commenting styles with 30 trials of each. Both students and tutors completed evaluation forms following each tutorial; the results include a summary of the quantitative outcome, as well as insightful comments that were included on the evaluation forms. Both students and tutors believe that it …

The Road To Tenure: Obstacles For The Media Adviser, Jeffrey M. Demas Jan 2006

The Road To Tenure: Obstacles For The Media Adviser, Jeffrey M. Demas

Communications Faculty Scholarship

Tenure has been the topic of various journal articles, but few have examined the process from within specific disciplines. This study surveyed 136 advisers of campus radio and television stations to ascertain what obstacles to tenure were associated with this position. Respondents reported that 1) advising a media outlet takes time from teaching and research; 2) advising the station and producing programming is not highly valued by tenure committees; 3) tenure is essential to job security because students tend to push the envelope in on-air activities, and; 4) tenure is an archaic concept and they have no interest in pursuing …

A Status Study Of The Counseling Services Programs In The University Of Kentucky Community College System, Jan L. Ireland

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The study involved analyzing the counseling services programs in the University of Kentucky Community College System. In addition to this, the study analyzed the academic and professional background of the counselors, determined the present duties and responsibilities of the counselors, and determined the counselors’ perceived ideal duties and responsibilities. The reason for the study was to provide information which can be helpful to different groups concerned with community colleges. Some of the information may be useful to graduate programs concerned with the preparation of counselors who intend to work in community college counseling as a profession, may find that some …
