Sankofa: Preserving Your Cultural Heritage Through The Art Of Narratives And Story-Telling, Theressa N Cooper

Black Issues Conference

As research has struggled to identify and define the Black experience (Du Bois, 1903; Bell, 2002), Obidah (2003) suggests that one of the lasting theoretical frameworks that resonates for the social science community and for Black people themselves is Dubois’ (1903) notion of double consciousness. Dubois (1903) found that as African Americans, we live two lives – one that is full of pride for its African-ness and all that it encompasses; and a the second life in which we have to assimilate into the American (White) culture. Therein lies the struggle, where the African American is seeking to find a …

Vote Or Die: The Power Of The Black Vote, Stephen J. Smith, Harlin Miller

Black Issues Conference

The progress of Blacks in America can, in many ways, be attributed to the advancements made by gaining the right to participate in the political process. From establishing equal opportunities in housing to leveling the playing field in the workplace, the quality of life we as African-Americans enjoy today would not be possible if those before us did not fight for the right to vote. However, today’s Black America exhibits great apathy when it comes to voting on all levels. Most, when asked about their political views and/or affiliation, cannot clearly articulate the differences between Conservative and Liberal, Democrat or …

#Trending Now: Why Black Folk Need To Be In Psychotherapy, Samantha Lynn Gray

Black Issues Conference

Despite evidence that mental health problems (ranging from very mild to severe) affect all people, the rates of minorities engaged in personal psychotherapy have remained low throughout the past few decades. Historically, minorities have tended to devalue the importance of mental health, and stigmatize therapeutic interventions. This session will focus on why we need to shed the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and detail where we’ve been, where we are, and where we need to head in term of opening ourselves to self-exploration within the realm of psychotherapy. Also learn about how our physical health is intertwined with our mental …

Readers' Copyright, Jessica Litman Oct 2011

Readers' Copyright, Jessica Litman

Open Access Week

An open lecture on reclaiming copyright for readers, listeners, and viewers, given by University of Michigan Law professor Jessica Litman.

A system of copyright protection makes little sense unless it is designed to encourage the use and enjoyment of the works it induces authors to create and publishers to disseminate. Litman argues that a clear-eyed examination of copyright's history reveals that solicitude for readers and members of the audience is, in fact, deeply encoded in copyright's DNA. Recently, readers' interests have faded in apparent importance in the copyright scheme in ways that have unbalanced the copyright system, and undermined public …

Concurrent Session, Understanding The Transitional Needs Of Transfer Students: A Mixed Methods Study, Kelly Gray, Kait Nagi

New England Conference for Student Success

"Transition to college is challenging for many students. New Student Orientations, First-Year Seminars,

Living-Learning Communities and other initiatives are designed to support students during this time but

sometimes transfer students are left out of the process. This session will review findings from a recent

mixed-methods study designed to better understand how transfer students perceived their academic

transition into a new institution. Intended audience: those with a novice to intermediate understanding of

the transfer student experience. Takeaways: ideas and resources to create programming on other

campuses."
