Environmental Enrichment And Prior Experience Of Live Prey Improve Foraging Behaviour In Hatchery-Reared Atlantic Salmon, C. Brown, T. Davidson, K. Laland Dec 2003

Environmental Enrichment And Prior Experience Of Live Prey Improve Foraging Behaviour In Hatchery-Reared Atlantic Salmon, C. Brown, T. Davidson, K. Laland

Aquaculture Collection

Atlantic salmon salmo salar L. parr were reared for 3 months under standard hatchery conditions or in a structurally enriched tank (containing plants, rocks and novel objects). Half of each of these fish had prior exposure to live prey in the form of live bloodworm while the other half were fed hatchery-pellets. After 12 days all fish were tested on a novel live prey item (brine shrimp). A significant interaction between the two factors (prior exposure to live prey and rearing condition) revealed that foraging performance was only enhanced in fish that had been reared in a complex environment and …

The Bold And The Shy: Individual Differences In Rainbow Trout, L. U. Sneddon Apr 2003

The Bold And The Shy: Individual Differences In Rainbow Trout, L. U. Sneddon

Aquaculture Collection

Boldness and shyness were investigated as ‘personality’ traits in hatchery-reared rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Bold fish spent more time in an open area and were more active than shy fish and these behaviours could be used as indicators of boldness and shyness. These differences were related to learning ability in a simple conditioning task. Bold fish learned the task more quickly than shy fish.

What Are Four-Year-Olds Doing At School?:Reconciling Current Knowledge About Learning In Young Children With Early Educational Pedagogy, Noirin Hayes Jan 2003

What Are Four-Year-Olds Doing At School?:Reconciling Current Knowledge About Learning In Young Children With Early Educational Pedagogy, Noirin Hayes

Other resources

The title of the thesis is ‘What are four-year-olds doing at school? Reconciling current knowledge about learning in young children with early educational pedagogy.’ The study addresses the question of four-year-olds at school on two levels. On the one hand, the study describes what four-year-olds are doing at school. Using data from the IEA Preprimary Project1 the thesis provides information on parental and teacher expectations for 203 four-year-olds and presents details of the observed behaviour of the children and their teachers in school. Some of this data has been reported elsewhere (Hayes, O’Flaherty and Kernan, 1997). Additional analysis has been …

Image Retrieval With Svm Active Learning Embedding Euclidean Search, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Yap Peng Tan Jan 2003

Image Retrieval With Svm Active Learning Embedding Euclidean Search, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Yap Peng Tan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Image retrieval with relevance feedback suffers from the small sample problem. Recently, SVM active learning has been proposed to tackle this problem, showing promising results. However, a small but sufficient number of initially labelled samples are still required to ensure the subsequent active learning efficient and good retrieval performance. In the existing method, the user is asked to label more images before active learning starts. In this paper, a method of embedding Euclidean search into SVM active learning is proposed. With the help of Euclidean search, not only the adverse effect on retrieval performance due to lack of initially labelled …

Bootstrapping Svm Active Learning By Incorporating Unlabelled Images For Image Retrieval, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Zhihua Zhang Jan 2003

Bootstrapping Svm Active Learning By Incorporating Unlabelled Images For Image Retrieval, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Zhihua Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The performance of image retrieval with SVM active learning is known to be poor when started with few labelled images only. In this paper, the problem is solved by incorporating the unlabelled images into the bootstrapping of the learning process. In this work, the initial SVM classifier is trained with the few labelled images and the unlabelled images randomly selected from the image database. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that by incorporating unlabelled images in the bootstrapping, the efficiency of SVM active learning can be improved, and thus improves the overall retrieval performance.

A Multifaceted Approach To Distributed Communities Of Learning And Practice, Helen Hasan, Kate Crawford Jan 2003

A Multifaceted Approach To Distributed Communities Of Learning And Practice, Helen Hasan, Kate Crawford

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In the electronic age, locally-driven regeneration of the concept of community could be enabled by a flexible, multifaceted model where new information and communication technologies are the catalyst. However technology, no matter how advanced, is far from providing the complete answer and it is essential to take an integrated socio-technical approach to this issue. This paper reports on two cases that are part of ongoing research into distributed communities, framing them as phases of an activity system in expansive learning cycles in the context of a program of innoyatiye learning. This research d!monstrates that such communities are viable. with a …
