Order And Organization As Problems Of Developing Political Systems: Ghana And Nigeria, Hugh Michael Stevenson Jul 1966

Order And Organization As Problems Of Developing Political Systems: Ghana And Nigeria, Hugh Michael Stevenson

Masters Theses

Introduction

The study of political development has come to dominate that branch of the discipline of political science concerned with comparative politics. There is, however, a terminological and methodological confusion in the literature that is in need of clarification.

The Hallucinogens Of Meso-American: An Ethnohistorical Survey, Rosemary B. Mudd Jun 1966

The Hallucinogens Of Meso-American: An Ethnohistorical Survey, Rosemary B. Mudd

Anthropology ETDs

This study describes and analyzes the patterns of usage associated with the hallucinogenic plants of Meso-America prior to the conquest and during the colonial period. Although distinctive features of the utilization of specific hallucinogens are noted, primary emphasis is placed on the use of the plants in general. Both continuities and changes from the pre-conquest and colonial periods to the present are indicated by the study. Separate descriptions of each hallucinogen or group of hallucinogens based principally on data in colonial sources are presented as essential to the analysis. The specific plants discussed include the hallucinogenic mushrooms, peyote, the Daturas, …

Stimulus Coding Ability And Stimulus Predifferentiation, Larry E. Homan Jun 1966

Stimulus Coding Ability And Stimulus Predifferentiation, Larry E. Homan

Psychology ETDs

Many recent studies of the effects of past-experience variables on perception have organized in the effort to provide tests of the enrichment and differentiation accounts of these effects. The enrichment position. Usually stated in terms of acquired distinctiveness of cues (Goss, 1955; Miller and Dollard, 1941), holds that learning a distinctive responses to a stimulus will result in the addition to that stimulus of a distinctive response-produced cue. In turn, the newly “enriched” stimulus is less similar to related stimuli than before such learning occurred. Moreover, this reduction in similarity is conceptualized as a reduction in generalization among the list …

A Revision Of The Morgan Test Of Logical Reasoning, Fred K. Mccoy Jun 1966

A Revision Of The Morgan Test Of Logical Reasoning, Fred K. Mccoy

Master's Theses

Do we learn to reason logically just as we learn grammar or estimating distances? Philosophers usually say we do and have taught logic as a discipline for thousands of years. They are generally not content to teach "about" logic, or in the history of it; they generally state their intent is to teach "logic for everyday thinking". Appendix VI is a personal communication to the author from a philosopher stating this clearly and comparing the skill of logical reasoning with the skill of using grammar.

Or is logical reasoning a relatively inherent trait, as intelligence is generally assumed to be? …

The Relationship Of The Detection Of Unpredictable Visual Binary Sequences And Selected Personality Measures, Currell L. Pattie Jun 1966

The Relationship Of The Detection Of Unpredictable Visual Binary Sequences And Selected Personality Measures, Currell L. Pattie

Master's Theses

To a certain extent the everyday incidents of life occur in a chaotic and orderless fashion. But in such an unpredictable world people must predict such events even if they present themselves at random. This suggestion by Restle (1961) is especially relevant to an experiment by Pattie (1964a) in the area of human binary prediction. This study seemed to indicate that individuals search for and believe in orderly, predictable solutions in apparently orderless, random situations. Ss were given a randomized deck of 200 index cards, of which 75% displayed an easily discriminable symbol with the remaining 25% bearing another symbol. …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Wisc And School Success Of Emotionally Disturbed Children, Paul Daniel Shearer Jun 1966

A Study Of The Relationship Between Wisc And School Success Of Emotionally Disturbed Children, Paul Daniel Shearer

Master's Theses

Since the publishing of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children in 1949, the majority of the validation don procedures have been correlations of the WISC with other intelligence teats or with achievement tests. As Littell (1960) indicated in his review of the research, both methods have yielded high correlations and are responsible in part for the wide acceptance of the WISC. While research has well established the ability of the WISC and other intelligence teats to predict school achievement in a normal population, the generalization of these findings to a population of emotionally disturbed children is in question for several …

An Inquiry Into The Kuder Preference Record Vocational Verification Scale And The Guilford Zimmerman Temperament Survey Falsification Scale, Ann Denton Ryder Jun 1966

An Inquiry Into The Kuder Preference Record Vocational Verification Scale And The Guilford Zimmerman Temperament Survey Falsification Scale, Ann Denton Ryder

Master's Theses

This study investigated the variables measured by the verification scale of the Kuder Preference Record-Voca tiona l and the falsification scale of the GuilfordZimmerman Temperament Survey. Responses of an experimental group of Protestant seminary students were compared with those of a control group of general psychology students. These groups were shown to be different in self-perceived values and attitudes, as defined by results on the Allport Vernon Lindzey Study of Values and the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey, with the experimental group presenting the more altruistic outlook. This was taken to indicate that this group would not be falsifying in giving positive …

A Study Of Child Rearing Attitudes Among Negro Mothers Residing In A Low Status Neighborhood, Curtis J. Jones Jun 1966

A Study Of Child Rearing Attitudes Among Negro Mothers Residing In A Low Status Neighborhood, Curtis J. Jones

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Problem

The problem in this investigation is to determine the characteristics of lower status Negro mothers and their families and to determine whether specific characteristics are associated with the utilization or acceptance of traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes. More specifically, this investigation will attempt to determine what cognate relationships prevail in the various segments of lower status Negro mothers with respect to their exhibiting traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes and their relative social status position, family composition, and mother's social contact frequency.

It appears that in order to make more reliable generalizations about the Negro families …

A Comparison Of The Illinois Test Of Psycholinguistic Abilities And The Parsons Language Sample In Assessing The Linguistic Functioning Of Institutionalized Mentally Retarded Children, Ralph Donald Lee Horner Jun 1966

A Comparison Of The Illinois Test Of Psycholinguistic Abilities And The Parsons Language Sample In Assessing The Linguistic Functioning Of Institutionalized Mentally Retarded Children, Ralph Donald Lee Horner

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to compare the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities and the Parsons Language Sample in assessing the linguistic functioning of institutionalized mentally retarded children. A stratified sample of mentally retarded children was administered both the ITPA and PLS in counterbalanced order. The results were correlated through the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and the correlation matrix analyzed through a principle-components factor analysis. The ITPA, PLS comparison produced high correlation coefficients with the exception of the Intraverbal Gesture sub-test of the PLS. The factor analysis of the correlation matrix revealed one or more sub-tests had high loadings …

An Anthropometric Study Of The Face And Dentition Of The Pima Indian Population At The Stewart Indian School, Carson City, Nevada, Wilmonte Lee Penner Jun 1966

An Anthropometric Study Of The Face And Dentition Of The Pima Indian Population At The Stewart Indian School, Carson City, Nevada, Wilmonte Lee Penner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Study casts and cephalograms were obtained on 18 female and 21 male Pima Indian students from the Stewart Indian Boarding School, Carson City, Nevada. Dentitional characteristics were assessed both clinically and by study casts. Cranio-facial analyses were performed by utilizing the skeletal and denture pattern variables suggested by the Downs and Riedel cephalometric analyses.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the extent to which the Pima conforms to the Mongoloid master pattern, and (2) to test whether or not significant differences exist between the Pima and other Mongoloid groups which would allow discrimination.

The results of …

The United States Balance Of Payments Disequilibrium And The 1949 World Currency Devaluations., William J. Carroll May 1966

The United States Balance Of Payments Disequilibrium And The 1949 World Currency Devaluations., William J. Carroll

Economics ETDs

The fundamental idea that this study attempts to convey is that the devaluation of foreign currencies against the United States dollar and gold in 1949 are in large part responsible for the deficit which the United States has experimented since the early 1950’s in its international balance of payments. In other words, it is felt by this writer that the 1949 devaluations set a price for the dollar and gold which was too high to insure that in subsequent years the Untied States would be able to balance its international payments and receipts over a period of time sufficient to …

Tension And Rationality Of Decision Making In The International System., Preston G. Mccrossen May 1966

Tension And Rationality Of Decision Making In The International System., Preston G. Mccrossen

Political Science ETDs

"Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed." This first sentence in the Preamble of the Constitution of the United Nation's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a concise statement of the motivation of the psychologists now involved in the study of international relations. The end of World War Two and the beginning of the nuclear arms race held special significance for these scholars. Other disciplines had shown their inability to adequately understand the nature of the international system, while at the same time demonstrating …

Constructing A Tool For Measuring Common Social Work Activities, Patricia M. Armstrong, James A. Brown, Robert L. Roy, Edward R. Walker, Donald G. Welch

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is one in a series of studies concerned with the interrelationship of General Systems Theory and social work knowledge. The purpose of this particular study was to develop a questionnaire to test the generic quality of the actions performed among the three traditional specialties of social work -- casework, group work and community organization.

The universe from which the sample of concepts was obtained were the acts performed by people in behalf of others. Specifically, the 421 concepts in the sample were obtained from literature in the fields of social work, sociology, psychology, and counseling and guidance. These …

Concept Of Unity Among Indian Tribes Of Maine, New Hampshire And New Brunswick, Andrea Jeanne Bear May 1966

Concept Of Unity Among Indian Tribes Of Maine, New Hampshire And New Brunswick, Andrea Jeanne Bear

Senior Scholar Papers

The purpose in writing this ethnohistory was not to prove that the tribes in Maine, New Hampshire and New Brunswick were unified, but rather, to illustrate the extent to which they were unified. With this general end in mind, my research therefore could not follow only one line of inquiry. It had to be divided into various sub-topics to cover my various orientations to the problem. One of my first orientations was that of validating my belief in a former unity through fieldwork among the Indians involved. This orientation provided the basis for my first chapter, which was considerably augmented …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Over the years, Utah has enjoyed the advantage of having natural agricultural resources that favor the production of livestock. Sheep and beef cattle do well on the desert and high mountain ranges that cover much of the state, Dairy cattle and wintering beef cattle use the alfalfa and native hay along with some corn silage that is grown in the irrigated valleys. Feed grains are grown in rotation with forage crops on irrigated land and also on dry land. Before 1950, the quantities of feed grains produced had been sufficient to meet the needs of dairy, range livestock and poultry. …

The Preschool Child's Concept Of God, Linda Thompson Saxton May 1966

The Preschool Child's Concept Of God, Linda Thompson Saxton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The setting is a cheerful nursery school room bustling with activity and lively three and four year old children. Sally, Tom, and Dick are building with blocks and are busily engaged in conversation regarding who is "boss" of the project.

"I'm the boss," states Sally emphatically.

''No, I'm the boss." retorts Dick with just as much enthusiasm.

"Did you know that God is boss of the whole world?" questions Tom thoughtfully. So we see one more example of the tremendous task of reaching for and of gathering in facts and experiences in the environment in order to create some semblance …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Adapt -- “to make suitable to requirements; adjust or modify fittingly." Adaptability is a trait which has been attributed to Navajo Indians by anthropologists, educators, novelists, psychologists, artists -- in fact, by almost everyone who has had dealings with them over a period of time. Yet, to identify specific examples of their adaptability and the attempt to measure the effect upon interpersonal relations of evidences of adaptation has proved to be no easy task.

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson May 1966

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Children afflicted with speech disorders represent the largest single group of exceptional children. The numbers of speech defectives reach between 2 and 2½ million or about 5% of the population (Johnson et al., 1956). Newman (1961) has disputed this claim and has stressed the difference to be made between speech differences and handicapping conditions:

It can be confidently stated that 5% of the population categorized speech handicapped, have speech differences of such a nature that the differences can be pointed out, recorded, classified, or quantified in some reliable manner. But that does not necessarily make the conditions handicapping or impairing. …

The Dynamics Of Duopoly, Gordon E. Johnson May 1966

The Dynamics Of Duopoly, Gordon E. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A monopolist, knowing the demand curve for his product, can in a given period produce the quantity of this product which will maximize his profit. Any larger or smaller quantity will result in less profit. When another manufacturer starts producing the same or similar product, a duopoly result. The new manufacturer, in order to maximize his profit, according to Cournot, will choose a quantity that is derived on the assumption that the original manufacturer's quantity will remain fixed.

Selecting Optimum Conversion Practices In The Pinyon-Juniper Type, Richard J. Marasco May 1966

Selecting Optimum Conversion Practices In The Pinyon-Juniper Type, Richard J. Marasco

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A profit criterion which will make possible the selection of optimum conversion practices in the Pinyon-Juniper woodlands can be made operational if: (a) it is possible to predict eradication costs and resulting total costs (eradication costs, seed costs, and seed application costs), and (b) it is possible to determine for age production resulting from initial eradication, as well as when it reaches absolute minimum allowable limit due to tree re-growth. Knowledge of the above relationships makes it possible to determine the optimum practice.

A Study Of The Writings Of Walter Rauschenbusch As Reflected In His Books On The Social Gospel, Natille Pierce Lindsey May 1966

A Study Of The Writings Of Walter Rauschenbusch As Reflected In His Books On The Social Gospel, Natille Pierce Lindsey

OBU Graduate Theses

Using primarily his five books on the social gospel movement, this study of Walter Rauschenbusch centered on the man as a writer and literary figure. A background investigation had revealed that there had been extensive studies of Rauschenbusch as a man, a preacher, a social critic, and a theological professor but not of his career or ability as a writer.

Since Rauschenbusch and his writings were so inextricably interwoven that one cannot be explained satisfactorily apart from the other, the social gospel movement of which he is sometimes called the father, was first examined in some detail. This study revealed …

A Historical Survey Of The Economic Development Of Mainland China, 1949-1962, Mandhatasinh A. Chauhan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chinese agriculture differs from the Western agriculture in the development and utilization of agricultural science on the fields. China has always been an agricultural country, but she failed to improve in techniques of cultivation as the time passed by. The land, prior to the Communist take-over, was owned and cultivated by individuals and the produce was sold in a free-market. Unfortunately, the Chinese government, prior to 1949, failed to bring about adequate agricultural reforms and implement economic development measures.

As a result an overwhelming proportion of the population of China is occupied on the land, the supply of which is …

Estimating Forage Production Following Pinyon-Juniper Control: A Probabilistic Approach, Terrence F. Glover May 1966

Estimating Forage Production Following Pinyon-Juniper Control: A Probabilistic Approach, Terrence F. Glover

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An important management practice within the 60-80 million acres of Pinyon-Juniper woodlands is to convert these woodlands to open rangelands. The success or failure of seedling adapted grasses in place of trees is contingent upon the revegetation techniques employed and upon fortuitous weather patterns. In order to formulate policy for Pinyon-Juniper control decisions, persons responsible for such policies need to know the risks of introducing range grasses into given areas. This thesis is essentially a hypothesis concerning the magnitude of such risks.
