This paper traces the collaboration between the librarians in my special library and two academic departments in my university. Our initial discussions led to a deeper understanding of our mutual goals: helping students acquire the research and writing skills they would need to write their master's theses, and their continued engagement in scholarship as future professionals, as consumers, and as producers of new knowledge in their field. Andy Huse, Barbara Lewis, Lily Todorinova, and Matt Torrence participated in a panel presentation for RUSA MARS Hot Topics. Their presentation titled "Informed Desk Staffing Through Quantified Reference Statistics” discussed the data collection, data analysis, and decision-making aspects of the Re-envisioning Reference project at the USF Libraries. This project examined the implementation and effectiveness of online data collection tools and the use of their data to inform managerial decisions as to scheduling of desk hours and staffing levels. Declining reference statistics, diminishing human resources, and the desire to be more proactive and embedded in academic depart- ments, prompted the University of South Florida Library to create a taskforce for re-envisioning reference services. The taskforce was charged with examining the staffing patterns at the desk and developing recommendations to give librarians greater flexibility and to better respond to the information-seeking needs of users. These recommendations were based on statistics of desk usage, collected with the newly adapted online tool Desk Tracker, and structured interviews with library administrators. In 2010 the Interlibrary Loan department of the University of South Florida, Tampa, moved to unify its ILLiad sign on practices and align with the University wide objective toward a single sign-on environment. Initial plans to implement authentication with CAS evolved in response to obstacles and system failures and resulted in an ILLiad, Shibboleth, and CAS combination. This article reviews the migration project and its culmination in a successful, and unique, authentication assembly.

Writing and researching are highly interrelated processes and there is much overlap between the goals and responsibilities of writing center staff and librarians. There is little evidence, however, that partnership between writing centers and libraries has been instituted as standard practice in academic institutions. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to explore the current state of the relationship between the writing center and the library. A telephone survey was administered to librarians in a sample of 268 academic institutions. The results indicated that only 26.7% of libraries actively collaborate which their university’s writing center. A strong majority of the …

A recent Print Serials Review was conducted at the University of South Florida Tampa Library with the intention of replacing low-use print titles with high-demand print or electronic resources. Two concepts motivated this project. 1) Journals have long been an important resource for an academic institution, but the format in which these resources are primarily used has changed with increased electronic availability. 2) Collection development librarians at USF wish to deliver high-demand resources to their faculty and students. The connection between weather-related disasters and mental health is bound up in treatment, both acute and long-term, of suddenly vulnerable populations, whether they are in-place survivors, displaced persons, or refugees. The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) Research Library/ University of South Florida Library System has undertaken a collection focus on disaster mental health. Undergraduates can make significant contributions as members of multimedia production teams for academic libraries. In this case, at USF Tampa Library, an undergraduate “YouTube video blogger” worked with library faculty and graduate students to create an information literacy video, “Databases!” The video was used as part of the USF instruction program during the fall 2006 semester. In addition to an information literacy video, the video team also created a humorous rap video that included an anti-anti-plagiarism theme and highlighted USF library services. Participatory action research [PAR] combines systematic research with the development of a practical intervention. PAR methodology draws on the knowledge of the user population to identify problems, to tailor treatments, and to disseminate the results, in combination with professional guidance and project oversight. This exploratory study was designed to gain an understanding of the expectations of the various stakeholders in the system of care for children with mental health challenges: providers of services, researchers, evaluators, youth who had used services, administrators, policy-makers, family, and advocates.
