The Silent Suffering Of Survivors: The Covid-19 Pandemic's Impact On Domestic Violence Resources, Osoniya I. Wodi Feb 2023

The Silent Suffering Of Survivors: The Covid-19 Pandemic's Impact On Domestic Violence Resources, Osoniya I. Wodi

XULAneXUS

Increased reports of domestic violence has coincided with the eruptions and growth of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous research has shown a positive correlation between domestic violence and the occurrence of humanitarian crises. Recently published research about domestic violence police reports in the COVID-19 pandemic has also supported this correlation. We used data from the National Network To End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) to analyze the number of survivors served by domestic violence programs in the United States, type of resources available, and unmet request from 2019-2021, one year pre-pandemic and the first two years of the pandemic. Findings from this study …

A Supply Chain Model For Library Quality And Service Improvement, Nancy Kress, Joel Wisner Jan 2021

A Supply Chain Model For Library Quality And Service Improvement, Nancy Kress, Joel Wisner

LEAN Management Initiative

The key to a library’s success is its ability to effectively and economically deliver services and information that users value. Additionally, the objective of supply chain management is to coordinate the focal firm’s processes and activities with those of its suppliers and customers, such that the firm’s delivered products and services meet or exceed customer requirements. It thus seemed appropriate to analyze a library from a supply chain perspective to assess and improve its ability to serve its users. Consequently, the authors employed an action research methodology to work with library personnel from two departments, User Services and Technical Services, …

Religious Views And Coping In The Black Community, Tresaundra Roberson, Elizabeth Yost Hammer Dec 2020

Religious Views And Coping In The Black Community, Tresaundra Roberson, Elizabeth Yost Hammer

XULAneXUS

Abstract

The topic of mental illness is taboo in the Black Community. This experiment sought to explore the relationship between the religious views African Americans hold and how they deal with mental illness stigma. I considered the factors of religiosity and coping, as a predictor of what type of coping mechanism the individual would choose to use. Undergraduates were given two surveys using Likert-Scales followed by a demographic section, the first measured how religious an individual was using the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS), while the second measured how often an individual used certain coping mechanisms derived from the COPE …

The Link Between Social Media Usage And Natural Hair Discrimination, Alia Wells Dec 2020

The Link Between Social Media Usage And Natural Hair Discrimination, Alia Wells

XULAneXUS

Since slavery, African Americans have been negatively impacted by Eurocentric beauty standards in America which favors the White majority. This has caused for natural hair to be discriminated against for centuries. As time has passed, African Americans have learned to appreciate their culture, beauty, and hair. The Natural Hair Movement on social media has improved society’s view on natural hair, but Eurocentric beauty standards are still very much present on all media platforms. I hypothesize that a lot of time spent on social media negatively influences views on natural hair compared to non-natural hair on African American women. Participants are …

Best Practices: The Relationship Between School Counselors' Self-Efficacy And Conducting Suicide Risk Assessments, Maisha Roneal Davis Dec 2020

Best Practices: The Relationship Between School Counselors' Self-Efficacy And Conducting Suicide Risk Assessments, Maisha Roneal Davis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental cross-sectional study is to investigate the self-efficacy of middle and high school counselors in the state of Louisiana as it relates to their ability to conduct youth suicide risk assessments. Broadly, the study compares the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP). CACREP accredited and non-accredited school counselors to determine if CACREP accreditation equips school counselors with higher self-efficacy. To this end, the study employs the Counselor Suicide Assessment Efficacy Survey (CSAES) scale to analyze degrees of self-efficacy in conjunction with a demographic survey of sample characteristics associated with educational preparation, …

The digital conversion and creation of accessible records from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (SBS) Oral History Collection includes recorded and transcribed interviews with the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who, in 1915, founded Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) and continue to serve today. This article reflects on the beginnings of XULA and its unique place in Southern black history as the only Roman Catholic historically black college or university (HBCU) in the United States. It examines the necessity of archival oral history preservation at an African-American institution of higher education and the work archivists at Xavier University of …

Student-Centered Outreach Initiatives In University Archives: Promoting Alternatives To Top-Down Outreach Approaches, Jasmine S. Malone Sep 2020

Student-Centered Outreach Initiatives In University Archives: Promoting Alternatives To Top-Down Outreach Approaches, Jasmine S. Malone

Student Conference Oral Presentations

The university archive holds memorabilia of campus history that is often overlooked by undergraduate students. Some university archivists have emphasized the importance of increased, intentional outreach to undergraduate students with the goals of educating students about the value of archives, providing instruction for the use of primary source materials, and presenting archival services to potential post-graduate patrons. These efforts, though student focused, do not center the perspectives or contributions of the target audience. University archivists and special collections librarians must engage in student-centered outreach that builds relationships with undergraduate students by assisting in campus life documentation, providing resources for student-led …

The impact that the systemic invisibility of indigenous people in the national narrative has on addiction and the recovery process cannot be overstated. An exploration of the nature of how this invisibility has evolved and is currently maintained may facilitate a deeper understanding of the issues. Understanding the importance of indigenous storytelling and identity can help us more effectively meet those working toward recovery. Anchoring such work, inalienability of indigenous identity and the wisdom of indigenous storytelling will be examined as it relates to a recovery process.

Black Identity, Representation, And Identification In Comic Book Movies, Ayo Mckinney Jul 2020

Black Identity, Representation, And Identification In Comic Book Movies, Ayo Mckinney

XULAneXUS

The study of Black representation in comic book movies involving the variables representation, Black identity, and identification has never been done before. Black representation in comic book movies is a significant topic of study due to the prevalence of comic book movies in popular culture, because of the increasingly diverse casts of such films, and the impacts representation can have psychologically, socially, and historically. The researcher hypothesized that Xavier University of Louisiana students would identify more with comic book movie characters of the same race, and that stronger Black identity would be related to higher dissatisfaction with current Black representation …

The Impact Of Racial Salience On The Perception Of Natural Hair, Chance S. Carter Jun 2020

The Impact Of Racial Salience On The Perception Of Natural Hair, Chance S. Carter

XULAneXUS

The purpose of this experimental study investigates whether racial salience in Black populations determines one’s liking of Black women’s natural hair through a sample of 33 male and female college students. Racial salience is a predictor of racial identification. Furthermore, racial identity in ethnic minorities is positively correlated with self-esteem. Because racial identity is associated with self-esteem, individuals who do not have adequate self-esteem are less likely to reject imposed Eurocentric beauty standards and will therefore struggle to embrace Afrocentric phenotypes such as natural hair. For these reasons, I hypothesize participants exposed to a Black racial identity stimulus will report …
