Student-Centered Outreach Initiatives In University Archives: Promoting Alternatives To Top-Down Outreach Approaches, Jasmine S. Malone

Student Conference Oral Presentations

The university archive holds memorabilia of campus history that is often overlooked by undergraduate students. Some university archivists have emphasized the importance of increased, intentional outreach to undergraduate students with the goals of educating students about the value of archives, providing instruction for the use of primary source materials, and presenting archival services to potential post-graduate patrons. These efforts, though student focused, do not center the perspectives or contributions of the target audience. University archivists and special collections librarians must engage in student-centered outreach that builds relationships with undergraduate students by assisting in campus life documentation, providing resources for student-led …

The impact that the systemic invisibility of indigenous people in the national narrative has on addiction and the recovery process cannot be overstated. An exploration of the nature of how this invisibility has evolved and is currently maintained may facilitate a deeper understanding of the issues. Understanding the importance of indigenous storytelling and identity can help us more effectively meet those working toward recovery. Anchoring such work, inalienability of indigenous identity and the wisdom of indigenous storytelling will be examined as it relates to a recovery process.

Documenting Student Life: Using Omeka To Connect Students To The University Archives, Kayla Siddell Jan 2018

Documenting Student Life: Using Omeka To Connect Students To The University Archives, Kayla Siddell

Faculty and Staff Publications

Many institutional archives struggle to gain and maintain student participation in documenting the student experience. The history, images, and records of students and their various organizations are fundamental to the narrative of the university. Capturing the experiences of students and campus life is a difficult task as students create organizations, plan and attend events, and maintain a social media presence, all of which are rarely documented in university archives. At this institution, the Special Collections department wanted to increase students’ use of services and resources, and increase student donations to the archives to grow student-centered collections.

To address these concerns, Special Collections staff have created a website utilizing the Omeka platform called STATE-IT to engage students with the University Archives. This site houses digital archival materials, digital exhibits, and oral histories. STATE-IT also provides a quick …

Influenced by studies in traditional Ashkenazi and Sephardi scripts. The typeface had been designed for the printing of the Koren Tanakh, a first edition printed Jewish Bible processed through an all-Jewish collaboration for the first time in centuries. Koren’s project was inspired by the revival of Hebrew initiated by Haskalah writers in the 18th century. Haskalah writers utilized the language and scripts of written and printed literary texts. Influenced by philosophical and political ideologies of the European Enlightenment, the Haskalah explored Jewish identity through language by defining the secular context through traditional Jewish symbolism and narratives. The Zionist movement of …

Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum

Faculty and Staff Publications

A linguistic landscape signifies language used within a physical or virtual public space, in which communication is presented in typographic form, portraying a message to an audience. Within the state of Israel, the linguistic landscape presents a unique situation in which it is common to view municipal and commercial multilingual signs that are designed using Hebrew, English, and Arabic letterforms. By studying the diverse linguistic landscape within Israeli urban environments, the article offers perspectives on the use of multilingual visual language, based on discussions with five Israeli designers in the summer of 2015.

A Library Of Design: Electronic Collections Inspire Modern Research Spaces, Nancy Hampton

Faculty and Staff Publications

The Xavier University of Louisiana Library Resource Center was built in 1993. After Hurricane Katrina filled the library with 18 inches of water in 2005, its first floor was re-carpeted, its bookshelves refurbished and the reference room was returned to its original state. In 2013, the Xavier Library began acquiring electronic resources to replace the majority of its print reference and print journal collections. As more virtual resources were purchased, less shelving space was needed, inspiring Xavier librarians to seize this opportunity to create a more inviting library that students could use for research, gathering, and studying. This article describes …
