Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are associated with inappropriate protein deposition and ordered amyloid fibril assembly. Molecular chaperones, including αBcrystallin, play a role in the prevention of protein deposition. A series of site-directed mutants of the human molecular chaperone, αB-crystallin, were constructed which focused on the flexible C-terminal extension of the protein. Two 500g retail samples of thirteen beef, eleven lamb, four veal and two mutton cuts were purchased from 10 retail outlets (butchers and supermarkets) in different socio-economic areas of Sydney and Melbourne in 2002. One sample of each was cooked using standard low fat methods, and the lean and separable fat components of each raw and cooked sample were analysed by the National Measurement Institute in Melbourne for macronutrients, cholesterol, vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, and beta-carotene as well as sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. The aim of this study was to describe the nutrients provided to Australian children and adolescents by the breakfast meal and compare the food and nutrient intakes and health of regular breakfast eaters (those who ate breakfast five or more days a week) and skippers (who are breakfast rarely or never). Background & aims: This study aimed to determine the amounts of energy and protein required, ordered and consumed daily by long stay rehabilitation inpatients. Methods: A quantitative, weighed plate waste study. Thirty inpatients (16 females, 14 males; mean age 79.2 years; mean length of stay 52 days) from three rehabilitation hospitals in the Illawarra region of Australia. Data were collected over two days, including nutrition assessment details and weighed plate waste. Daily energy and protein requirements, amounts ordered and consumed were the outcome measures. Statistical analyses included paired t-tests, Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests and Spearman correlations. Results: Although adequate amounts of energy and protein were provided, significantly less was consumed than was required or ordered (p<0.05). Fifty-seven percent of the supplements were wasted, although they contributed 21.5% of energy and 20.6% of protein to the intakes of those who were prescribed them. Conclusions: Promising areas for interventions to improve intakes include the use of targeted supplement usage, food fortification, designated ward feeding assistants and ongoing nutrition surveillance.

Sponsorship of sporting events by the alcohol industry is a common practice in Australia and there is currently much debate about the appropriateness of inexorably linking sport with alcohol advertising and promotion. The aim of this paper is to provide some illustrative examples of current alcohol sponsorships in Australian cricket. Australian adolescents are consistently found to exhibit low levels of adherence to sun protection guidelines, resulting in high levels of skin cancer incidence in later life. Given the importance of image, appearance, and peer approval factors in adolescent sun protection, this study sought to examine adolescents’ perceptions of the “sun protection brand,” its competing brands, and possible complementary brands. A series of 14 focus groups were conducted with adolescents in Years 9 and 10 (junior high school), and the results are examined in the context of potential branding-related marketing strategies to overcome some of the barriers to sun protection.

The Advertising Standards Board passes judgments on complaints each year against what is referred to as prevailing community standards. There is however, no explicit definition of what these prevailing community standards are. The sun protection practices of Australian adolescents are not only inadequate, but continue to decline. This is despite adequate knowledge levels, and numerous previous educational and mass media campaigns/interventions. A more comprehensive understanding of adolescent attitudes to sun protection, and potentially a social marketing intervention, is thus required. We conducted a series of focus groups to address sun protection product usage and attitudes, and identified a number of Brand Loyalty segmentation groups. This finding demonstrates that attitudes and behaviours amongst adolescents are not homogenous, but that there are specific groups with differing and unique perspectives, requiring tailored intervention strategies.

Results indicate that older adults are unaware of the prevalence and severity of asthma, have limited understanding of symptoms and treatments, and tend to associate the condition with children. This paper investigates the influence of EEG electrode caps on specific absorption rate (SAR) in the head from a GSM900 mobile phone (217-Hz modulation, peak power output 2 W). SAR measurements were recorded in an anthropomorphic phantom using a precision robotic system. Peak 10 g average SAR in the whole head and in just the temporal region was compared for three phantom arrangements; no cap, 64-electrode "Electro-Cap," and 64-electrode "Quick-Cap". Methods: Television advertising data was collected from Sydney commercial television channels from 14-20 May 2006. Extrapolating from these data, the patterns of food advertising under four regulatory scenarios were examined, including arrangements restricting the content, volume and timing of advertisements. The recent viewpoint by Kamien1 and letter by Gunasekera2 rightly highlight the benefits of folate fortification and the unlikely occurrence of masking pernicious anaemia. Food Standards Australia New Zealand recently submitted a proposal supporting the mandatory fortification of bread-making flour to increase folate intakes in women of child-bearing age, with the aim of reducing the risk of children being born with neural tube defects.3 This proposal has had extensive public comment and will be considered by the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council. There has been much recent debate about how to combat Australia’s childhood obesity epidemic and, in particular, considerable controversy about regulations relating to food advertising to children on television. Three separate research studies on food advertising in Australia, conducted in 2002,1 20052 and 2006,3 including those by the authors, describe the frequency and proportion of television advertisements for fruit and vegetables, as well as for high-fat/high-sugar foods.
