Perceptions Of Education As An Avenue To Life Course Success: A Study Of Millennials, Patrick Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For more than a half a century the role of education and its influence on social mobility and status attainment has been a subject of research. Further more, education has been shown to be an important contributor for success over the life course. Much of the research surrounding status attainment and higher education has dealt with the Baby Boomer cohort. The purpose of the study is to examine education from a perspective that is less talked about to this point. This study uses data gathered by the Pew Research Center and examines a specific age group, current 18-30 year olds …
'Til Death Do I Wait: Experiences Of Food Insecurity Among Elders On The Meals On Wheels Waiting List, Marie Gualtieri
'Til Death Do I Wait: Experiences Of Food Insecurity Among Elders On The Meals On Wheels Waiting List, Marie Gualtieri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food insecurity is not a new phenomenon experienced by elderly persons living in the United States. In a recent report by Feeding America, approximately 4.8 million Americans over the age of 60 are food insecure, which has doubled since 2001, and is 50% higher than in 2007. Due to lack of funding to the program, Meals on Wheels by Seniors First is unable to give meals to seniors in the Central Florida area who are food insecure. Through structured face-to-face interviews, this study examines elders on the program's waiting list and explores how this population obtains food if they are …
Privatization Of Florida Juvenile Residential Facilities, Katherine Hancock
Privatization Of Florida Juvenile Residential Facilities, Katherine Hancock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Privatization of juvenile facilities and services has been the norm since the inception of the juvenile justice system. However, little research has been performed examining the impact of privatization on juvenile justice, despite the possible repercussions of this policy for the juveniles served. Prior research on privatization in other fields has tended to find a connection between privatization and outcomes; however, very little research has examined how privatization impacts operations, how operations impact recidivism, and how privatization and operations interact to produce juvenile justice outcomes. This exploratory study, informed by cybernetic systems theory and principal-agent theory, examined the mechanism by …
Pinning Motherhood: The Construction Of Mothering Identities On Pinterest, Kate Griffin
Pinning Motherhood: The Construction Of Mothering Identities On Pinterest, Kate Griffin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the new social media site, Pinterest, to uncover the processes through which mothers construct self- and public-identities. Despite being valued at over $3.8 billion dollars (Perez 2013), having an impressive user retention rate (Moore 2014), and having a highly gendered user base (Tekobbe 2013), Pinterest has been the site of limited sociological inquiry. Seventeen semi-structured qualitative interviews on mothering and Pinterest use were conducted with central Florida mothers who have a Pinterest account and at least one child between 6 months and 10 years old. Through analysis based in a grounded theory approach, three central themes emerged …
