Empowering Young People Through Participatory Film: A Postmethodological Approach, Antonia Canosa, Erica Wilson, Anne Graham

Professor Anne Graham

Children and young people’s voices have often been neglected in tourism research, and this is particularly the case when exploring tourism from the host community’s perspective. The lack of children and young people in tourism research has been attributed to the slow engagement and adoption of alternative and critical methodologies which open up new and fresh ways of interpreting reality. The paper aims to explore the potential for participatory film to uncover the perspectives of marginalised members of the community such as children and young people. We also discuss the use of participatory film as an epistemic philosophy, and as …

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Negotiating The Complexities Of Role-Identity Conflict, Jan Backhouse, Anne Graham Sep 2011

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Negotiating The Complexities Of Role-Identity Conflict, Jan Backhouse, Anne Graham

Professor Anne Graham

The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the experience of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren in NSW, Australia. In-depth interviews were conducted with 34 grandparents and their narratives transcribed and studied using paradigmatic analysis (Polkinghorne 1995) to reveal common themes among the stories told. Identity theory further informed the discussion of these findings. Woven throughout the grandparent narratives is a story of paradox – of experience simultaneously made up of pain/pleasure, myth/reality, inclusion/exclusion, being deserving/undeserving, visible/invisible and voiced/silenced. The findings signal a significant role-identity conflict for grandparents who are parenting grandchildren. This study points to the …

Progressing Participation: Taming The Space Between Rhetoric And Reality, Anne Graham, Jenni Whelan, Robyn Margaret Fitzgerald

Professor Anne Graham

Participation, as a social and political movement, continues to gain momentum, and the legal and sociological frameworks supporting the rights of children and young people to participate in various aspects of social life are now well established. Yet, there are gaps and silences behind the rhetoric of participation that beg closer scrutiny. Such analysis is important in ensuring “participation” is not un-problematically adopted by policy makers and practitioners without regard to the complex and competing agendas at work in its implementation or any clear evidence of the significance or outcomes for the young people involved. This paper explores some of …

Supporting Children's Social And Emotional Well-Being: Does 'Having A Say' Matter?, Anne Graham, Robyn Margaret Fitzgerald

Professor Anne Graham

This article argues the importance of ensuring initiatives aimed at improving children’s social and emotional well-being are based on sound participatory principles. The discussion posits links between the recognition of children, dialogic approaches to participation, changing conceptualisations of children and childhood, and children’s well-being. It explores these links in light of one particular initiative, Seasons for Growth (Graham, 1996, 2002, Seasons for Growth; Loss and Grief Education Program. MacKillop Foundation), an education programme built around emerging evidence that giving children a voice assists them to adapt to family change. The paper concludes with insights into what is involved when we …

This report presents the results from a survey developed and conducted by the Childwatch International Research Network’s Children and the Law Study Group. The survey was distributed, in May 2009, to all organisations currently involved with the Childwatch International Research Network. To date, completed surveys have been received from 13 institutions, representing 30% of the 44 organisations and 37% of the 35 countries involved.
