Background: In 2018 our library migrated to Ex Libris’s Alma and its discovery service Primo. Alma allows content from OAI-PMH compliant archives to be loaded to Primo for discovery. Our library has a Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) system and librarians were eager to explore including IR content in Primo. Post-migration a feed was established between the IR and Primo, but there were issues with adding all IR content and the feed was removed. Consequently, we wanted to explore alternatives that would allow for the integration of more selective IR content.

Objective

Controlled vocabularies are necessary for clinical research and clinical practice. When medical librarians use the same language to describe the same phenomena, scientific knowledge advances and best practices can be developed. MeSH is never objective. These headings always reflect some ways of understanding the world and exclude others. This project attempts to understand how bias is embedded in the controlled terms that structure medical knowledge and implications for medical librarians.

At the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, librarians conduct instruction sessions on various aspects of evidencebased medicine for first- and second-year medical students. One of these sessions, the Chest Pain Formative Observed Simulated Clinical Experience (FOSCE), introduces the Framingham Study, later cohort studies, and the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) Risk Calculator to first-year medical students. This calculator includes race as an input and over or underestimates risk for certain groups. Highlighting Faculty Research: The Researcher Profile Audit Service From The Himmelfarb Library At The George Washington University, Sara Hoover, Tom Harrod

Researcher profile systems are web-based tools which attempt to capture the scholarly output of a researcher. Some tools such as Google Scholar profiles and ORCiDs are opt-in systems that researchers must actively create and cultivate. Others such as the Scopus author profile are algorithmically generated and must be claimed by an author and checked for accuracy.

These profiles continue to grow in importance as a way for fellow researchers, potential employers, and possible collaborators to learn about a researcher’s scholarship. Therefore, it’s important for researchers to maintain these profiles and to ensure that they are accurate and complete.

How can medical librarians utilize emerging technologies to promote readership of Covid-19 related research from their institution?

This poster shows how librarians and staff at the Himmelfarb Library at George Washington University (GW) used the Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) platform to develop a subject-specific collection designed to collocate and promote COVID-19-related faculty research. In June 2020, we established a collection entitled “COVID-19 Publications by GW Authors” and since that time we have archived citations to over 100 publications. The George Washington University (GW) has held annual Research Days highlighting research done by students and residents. During spring 2017, GW’s Himmelfarb Library proposed a video series capturing students’ research experience and participating in GW’s Research Days.

The primary goal of the video series was to promote GW research achievements on both a school and individual level. The short video interviews provided participants with a new method to share their work, discuss their experiences and highlight the research conducted at their school.

: Inquiries about new informatics instructional opportunities in the curriculum led to a suggestion that the librarians submit an elective proposal. Despite knowing nothing about the approval process or the responsibilities of being a course director, several librarians accepted the challenge as a learning experience. Developing the proposal included writing the proposal, formally presenting it to two curriculum committees for approval, and then creating the specific lesson plans, identifying associated readings, creating a grading rubric and syllabus, and teaching the specific elective sessions. The 2014 launch of the revised medical school curriculum provided new opportunities for librarians to collaborate with faculty. Due to past informatics instruction in the first year curriculum, we were invited to expand this content as part of a new formative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (FOSCE) initiative. This poster will describe the development and implementation of the FOSCE informatics curriculum.

In FOSCEs, small groups of students rotated through simulated patient encounters in order to demonstrate their clinical knowledge and skills.
