An increase in electronic resources, modification in both usersʼ and staffʼs working space, and an internal initiative to create a single Service Desk, all resulted in the redesign of the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library's first floor. In 2004, a community health outreach partnership, funded by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), was launched. HIPS, Health Information Partners, promoted health literacy and health advocacy for residents of Washington, D.C., who frequented the area community health centers. A cooperative project between two urban academic medical libraries, the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library (George Washington University Medical Center) and the Dahlgren Medical Library (Georgetown Medical Center), was designed to relocate all pre-1980 bound journal volumes to a remote-storage facility. This poster explores the goals, process, and results, both financially and physically, of the collaborative initiative.

The migration of traditional anatomy and pathology wet labs to a digital format requires significant planning and collaboration amongst key faculty, administrative, and technology personnel. In addition to conversion of course materials, the changed format necessitated the renovation of a traditional bench lab to a state-of-the art digital classroom, significant IT investment, and ongoing coordination by library, classroom and computer resources personnel. Standardized policies and procedures were developed to guide additional requests for software to support new educational initiatives.

As an academic health sciences library in an urban area, the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library is challenged to provide outreach services to a diverse user population and to the surrounding community. To respond to this challenge the librarians provide outreach services and programs to accomplish the following goals: Provide additional education to user groups within the medical center; Provide focused services at the point of need within the curricula and the hospital; Reach out to the surrounding health care community, offering medical information and consumer education; Promote consumer resources to underserved populations.

This poster reports on a project initiated to establish a framework for evaluating our serials collection in order to preserve the collection from a flat budget and ever increasing serial costs and to meet patron demand for expanded access to electronic resources. An additional outcome was the development of a combined print and electronic serials collection development policy. A Journals Committee was formed to assess the value and most appropriate format(s) of individual journal titles. This poster represents the culmination of a year’s work by the Journals@Himmelfarb committee. This intra-library committee was formed to discuss the critical issues surrounding transitioning print journal subscriptions to electronic access only. In response to these discussions, collection development policies were created to reflect both print and electronic resources, a model electronic license was created, and faculty department heads were surveyed as to the usefulness and format preference for titles in their subject area. This resulted in improved understanding of the existing collection and assisted in developing the first steps for migrating from a print to an electronic collection.

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians collaborated to develop a web-based HIPAA training module for the medical center. Content was based on materials from an outside legal expert. Special attention was given to clinical scenarios illustrating key issues in HIPAA regulations. Librarians drafted the module which was then reviewed by legal consul, the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Graduate Medical Office. The final module was disseminated via the university's course management system. A corresponding module was developed for CME credit.

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians developed and taught "Introduction to Medical Informatics" to first-year medical students through the 2002/03 school year. In 2003/04, this course was restructured and integrated into the "Problem-Based Learning" (PBL) course taken by all first-year medical students. The goal was to improve resource selection and search skills, provide point-of-use learning and instruction, and to enhance the student experience. Librarians were assigned to individual PBL groups to act as advisors and guided the students through the informatics-related curriculum.

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians initiated an effort to increase awareness of alternative publishing venues which exist outside the commercial arena; to encourage faculty to investigate electronic publishing alternatives; and to provide a connection to open access initiatives. George Washington University now participates in four open access initiatives and interest is growing among GWU faculty.

At the same time, faculty, staff, and students are demanding access to more and more resources, and libraries are expected to support students in new and expanding programs in areas such as public health and genetics.
