The Spillover Effect: Fact Or Fiction, Madisen Reasonover, M. Ryan Nugent, Heather Barnes Truelove Phd Apr 2020

The Spillover Effect: Fact Or Fiction, Madisen Reasonover, M. Ryan Nugent, Heather Barnes Truelove Phd

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

In light of recent pro-environmental behavior (PEB) campaigns like banning plastic straws, some have raised concerns that performing small behaviors may undermine support for more difficult, and arguably more effective, political PEBs. Recent psychological research has focused on understanding how performing one PEB may spill over to increase (positive spillover) or decrease (negative spillover) the likelihood of performing additional PEB. We hypothesized that participants asked to perform a PEB due to identity reasons would display positive spillover and that participants asked to perform a PEB due to guilt reasons would display negative spillover. 120 student participants (93 women) were randomly …

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) studies have investigated gender (women versus men; Kim et al., 2018), race (Latinx and Black; Unfried et al., 2015), and culture differences (Asian versus American; Brown et al., 2018); however, few studies have looked at the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community (Stout & Wright, 2016). STEM has been stereotyped as a cis (same gender as birth) straight male field (Miller et al., 2020); STEM is viewed as an agentic (self-focused, achievement-oriented) field and lacking communal (other-oriented) opportunities (Diekman et al., 2010). When communal opportunities are integrated into fields that are stereotyped …

Ok, Boomers: Generational Differences In Pro-Environmental Behavior, Sarah Cline, Heather Barnes Truelove Phd, Jody Nicholson Phd Apr 2020

Ok, Boomers: Generational Differences In Pro-Environmental Behavior, Sarah Cline, Heather Barnes Truelove Phd, Jody Nicholson Phd

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Existing literature shows positive correlation between age and sustainability efforts, as well as the influence life experience has on generational differences. However, it is unclear how generational influences impact pro-environmental behavior (PEB). Using 244 MTurk participants (64% men, 69% White), the study participants were categorized by cohort; Millennials, ages 22-38 (74.4%), Gen X, ages 39-54 (17.4%), and Baby Boomers, ages 55-73 (8.2%). We predicted that Baby Boomers will show stronger support towards Reusable PEBs when compared to Gen X and Millennials. We also hypothesized that Gen X and Millennials will show stronger support towards Travel PEBs and Food PEBs when …

Using Fnirs To Measure Emotional Processing Following Mindful Meditation, Jesse Macyczko, Cassandra L. Rosenburg, Amber Wengert, Katherine C. Hooper Apr 2020

Using Fnirs To Measure Emotional Processing Following Mindful Meditation, Jesse Macyczko, Cassandra L. Rosenburg, Amber Wengert, Katherine C. Hooper

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Mindful meditation, an exercise which encourages its practitioners to be present in the moment and to be aware of their current emotions, thoughts, and sensations, has been shown to affect the processing of emotional information (Sobolewski et al., 2011) and to increase empathy (Tan, Lo, & Macrae, 2014). The prefrontal cortex has been implicated in these processes (Seitz, Nickel, & Azari, 2006). We sought to investigate the neural mechanisms which underlie how mindful meditation affects emotional processing and to determine whether any changes in brain activity could be linked to changes in empathy.

Participants in our experimental group practiced mindful …

Belief Consistency As A Mediator Of Mere Thought And Schema Tuning Effects On Attitude Polarization, Thanh Lu, Christoper Leone Apr 2020

Belief Consistency As A Mediator Of Mere Thought And Schema Tuning Effects On Attitude Polarization, Thanh Lu, Christoper Leone

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Given thought, favorable attitudes become more favorable and unfavorable attitudes become more unfavorable (Tesser, Martin, & Mendolia, 1995). Thought-induced polarization is moderated by “schema tuning”; polarization is more likely with well-developed (e.g., individuals) than less developed (e.g., groups) schemas (Leone & Ensley, 1985). We examined whether belief consistency mediates the interactive effects of mere thought and schemas on attitude polarization. Using a 15-point scale (-7 = extremely unfavorable, +7 = extremely favorable), 123 participants indicated their initial attitudes about 30 different sets of personality descriptions. For each of four descriptions (two for initially favorable attitudes, two for initially negative attitudes), …

Monsters Don't Eat Broccoli--A Pilot And Feasibility Study On Play And Food Acceptance In Preschoolers, Briana Lopez B.A., Kimberly Ciccone, Raul Ortiz, Ahna Parker, Anita Fuglestad Phd Apr 2020

Monsters Don't Eat Broccoli--A Pilot And Feasibility Study On Play And Food Acceptance In Preschoolers, Briana Lopez B.A., Kimberly Ciccone, Raul Ortiz, Ahna Parker, Anita Fuglestad Phd

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

It is common for preschool children to demonstrate neophobia, the fear of trying new foods, which can make them more reluctant to accept fruits and vegetables. As a result, many parents struggle to find adequate solutions to promote healthy eating. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of using pretend play in preschool children to improve food acceptance. Children from the UNF preschool were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: the control group with no pretend play (n= 15), and the experimental group with pretend play (n=12). Each group first participated in a play session …

Positive psychology is becoming of increasing interest in recent years and topics such as happiness, subjective well-being, life satisfaction are being examined in many areas of psychology (Quick et al, 2007; Simmons& Nelson, 2006). Many large scale studies are being conducted by survey researchers globally to understand these constructs. In addition there is also a lot of interest in examining positive dispositional variables such as Flow, Vigor and Engagement. In this study we looked at the positive experiences students have at UNF and the positive emotions associated with these experiences. We used an online survey on Qualtrics and studied the …

Did That Just Happen? Sex Differences, Protectiveness, And Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment, Kendall P. Dary, Jennifer M. Wolff, Christopher Leone Apr 2020

Did That Just Happen? Sex Differences, Protectiveness, And Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment, Kendall P. Dary, Jennifer M. Wolff, Christopher Leone

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Sexual harassment (SH) is any unwanted sexual advance, request, or verbal/physical sexual behavior. It must explicitly/implicitly affect employment, interfere with work performance, and create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive atmosphere (Quick & McFadyen, 2017). SH can happen to anyone, but more frequently occurs to females and is perpetrated by men (Gibson et al., 2016; Pryor, 1995). Having a good quality friend has been linked to decreased victimization (Kendrick et al., 2012).

The current study looks at the interpretation and identification of SH. Based on the literature, the hypotheses are participants will more likely identify SH when (H1) they are female …

Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy, Lori Ferguson, Ross Mcdonough Apr 2020

Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy, Lori Ferguson, Ross Mcdonough

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Beginning in the early 1900s, research into Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) showed promising results. After psychedelics were made illegal in the early 1970s they went largely underground. Psychedelic research resumed in the 1990s and the research shows great promise. Unlike traditional antidepressants that only manage symptoms and cause long term side effects, psychedelics could possibly be a cure with no side effects once the drug has worn off. Treatment often includes preparatory therapy sessions before, a session which includes the use of a psychedelic, and integrative therapy sessions after. Right now the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is the …

Blue Is Green And Red Is Too: The Political Divide On Environmental Policy Support, Cassandra Branham, M Ryan Nugent, Sarah Cline, Megan Kemp, Heather Barnes Truelove Phd Apr 2020

Blue Is Green And Red Is Too: The Political Divide On Environmental Policy Support, Cassandra Branham, M Ryan Nugent, Sarah Cline, Megan Kemp, Heather Barnes Truelove Phd

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

As political polarization has accelerated over the past decade, both Congress and the general population have become increasingly divided on policies for environmental protection. This division may be due to the recent trend of political affiliation being treated as a social identity from which to base ideological beliefs about the existence of climate change as well as the need for environmental programs targeting plastic consumption (Dunlap et al., 2016). We hypothesized that participants that classified themselves as Democrats would show more support for climate and plastic policies than participants that classified themselves as Republicans. We recruited a sample of 251 …

La Princesse Adrosis Fille De L'Empereur Hadrien: Sainte Et Martyre, Laila Fares Mar 2020

La Princesse Adrosis Fille De L'Empereur Hadrien: Sainte Et Martyre, Laila Fares

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

Interpreting As Ideologically-Structured Action: Collective Identity Between Activist Interpreters And Protesters, Mark A. Halley Phd, Nic Feb 2020

Interpreting As Ideologically-Structured Action: Collective Identity Between Activist Interpreters And Protesters, Mark A. Halley Phd, Nic

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

In this paper, I explore the work of the American Sign Language-English interpreters who volunteered in the 1988 Deaf President Now protest (DPN). Drawing from the construct of ideologically-structured action (Dalton 1994; Zald 2000), I frame the interpreters’ decisionmaking throughout the protest, showing how their beliefs about and relationships with deaf people shaped their actions. Further, I argue that the activist interpreters exhibited a collective identity (Polletta and Jasper 2001) with the deaf protesters, despite not being deaf themselves. I also discuss the integral role of interpreters to the protesters’ mission of challenging the existing power structure. To develop my …
