The association between trauma and personality disorders (PDs), while receiving much attention and debate, has not been comprehensively examined for multiple types of trauma and PDs. The authors examined data from a multisite study of four PD groups: schizotypal, borderline (BPD), avoidant, and obsessive-compulsive, and a major depression comparison group. Rates of traumatic exposure to specific types of trauma, age of first trauma onset, and rates of posttraumatic stress disorder are compared. Results indicate that BPD participants reported the highest rate of traumatic exposure (particularly to sexual traumas, including childhood sexual abuse), the highest rate of posttraumatic stress disorder, and …

Changes In Cell Wall Constituents And Mechanical Properties During Post-Harvest Hardening Of Trifoliate Yam Dioscorea Dumetorum (Kunth) Pax Tubers, Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Samuel Sefa-Dedeh
Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa
In an attempt to investigate the changes leading to the rapid post-harvest hardening of the white cultivars of Dioscorea dumetorum tubers, alterations in the plant cell wall constituents and mechanical properties of the tubers were monitored. A 4x2 factorial experiment with storage time (0, 24, 48 and 72 h) and storage conditions [cold room (4 _C, 85–100% RH) and tropical ambient (28 _C, 62–100% RH)] as variables were performed. Harvested tubers were stored for 24, 48 and 72 h under 4 and 28 _C. Changes in mechanical properties, acid and neutral detergent fibres, lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose contents were monitored. …

Hope From Hopelessness: Finding Contemporary Southern Literature Through Anne Tyler’S Use Of The Sound And The Fury, Amy M. Elliott
Hope From Hopelessness: Finding Contemporary Southern Literature Through Anne Tyler’S Use Of The Sound And The Fury, Amy M. Elliott
Amy M. Elliott
Critical debate focuses on the trend of Southern writers and the classification of their work within the tradition of Southern literature. One side of the argument supports contemporary writers as part of the Southern literary tradition. That is, it proposes that contemporary Southern writers continue to write Southern literature not by writing with the same style and magnitude as Faulkner and Warren, but by basing their writing on this tradition and modernizing it. An excellent example lies in Anne Tyler’s use of William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury as a foundation for her Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. Through …

Unemployment has remained at relatively high levels across most European countries for a generation now. There have been a number of suggested explanations for this, with correspondingly different policy implications. Two of the major hypotheses relate, first, to the impact on the European economies from increased international competition, and `globalisation’ more generally, and, secondly, to the effects of new technology and innovation. The effects of both globalisation and technology on growth and employment in Europe have been researched over the past two years through an EU-funded project, the results of which, relating in particular to innovation, are reported in this …

This interview i gave to the Vancouver Sun bring up some of the controversies surrounding the Shriner, a Masonic organization that is widely known for its hospitals for children and its sponsorship of circuses and parades. Although I "walked the hot sands", i.e. am a Shriner, I cannot say oi have been enthusiastic about some of its nuances. The article perhaps reflects that.

Using Biography In The Elementary Classroom, Dorothy Bowen
Dorothy N. Bowen
When biography first gained recognition as a genre for adults, it was not considered an appropriate form of literature for children. As it began to gain a place in children's literature, as was true of most books written for children at the time, biography was used as a tool for teaching children to emulate the hero.

In Washington my offices actually permit a glimpse of the offices of Phi Beta Kappa across the street. i would have to climb on the roof to see one of the Masonic temples in the city, but they are also close. So too both the Greek honor societies and Greek social fraternities are linked historically with Freemasonry, a connection little understood and little explored, and which this article helps to explain.

Changes In Rheological Properties And Amylase Activities Of Trifoliate Yam, Dioscorea Dumetorum, Starch After Harvest, Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Samuel Sefa-Dedeh
Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa
Changes in rheological properties and amylase activities occurring in trifoliate yam, Dioscorea dumetorum, starch after harvest were investigated. Trifoliate yam tubers were harvested and stored under tropical ambient (28 _C) and cold room conditions (4 _C) for 12, 24 and 36 h. The D. dumetorum starches were extracted from the tubers under study and samples were evaluated for changes in their rheological properties (paste characteristics) during storage and to study the action of amylases on D. dumetorum starch after harvesting. The post-harvest activities of a and b-amylases were also studied to evaluate their rate of action on D. dumetorum starch. …

Biochemical And Textural Changes In Trifoliate Yam Dioscorea Dumetorum Tubers After Harvest, Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Samuel Sefa-Dedeh
Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa
Biochemical and textural changes were investigated in trifoliate yam Dioscorea dumetorum tubers, after harvest, in an attempt to study the chemical and physical changes associated with the raw and cooked tubers and how these relate to the hardening phenomenon of the tubers after harvest. A 2x2x3x4 factorial experiment, with cultivar, storage condition, treatment and storage time as their respective variables, was done. Samples were analysed for moisture, starch, reducing sugars, alcohol-soluble sugars, acid and neutral detergent fibre, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The Warner–Bratzler test cell was used in a TA.XT2 Texture Analyser to measure the hardness of cooked tubers. The …

Adverse Juvenile Sex Ratio In Kerala By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Professor Vibhuti Patel
Census 2001 has revealed a deterioration in the juvenile malefemale sex ratio in Kerala. Hospital birth records can help establish sex ratios at birth and thus the prevalence of female foeticide. However, civil society and the state will need to pitch in to check the misuse of technology for female foeticide in Kerala

There has never been a satisfactory solution to the problem of handling / controlling political power, albeit the liberal claim that theirs is the best of the possible solutions known to human history. Notwithstanding the rhetoric justifying the creation and evolution of the modern nation-state, which focuses on its potential – through the ‘Rule of Law’ – to be more just and egalitarian than any other system of organised political power, there is overwhelming empirical evidence to show that things have not changed very much. States continue to repress their citizens in all manner of ways. The difference being that, …

Gifts For The Soul: A Guided Journey Of Discovery, Transformation, And Infinite Possibilities (Book Author, Dawn E. Clark; Book Reviewer, Carroy Ferguson)), Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
Dawn E. Clark's Gifts for the Soul is an intriguing self-help book, full of promise and hope for a new way to engage in self-healing and what the author calls soul healing through soul retrieval work. According to the author, the ancient healing tradition of soul retrieval to heal soul loss has been documented by many cultural anthropologists. The tradition apparently has been traced to a belief in the ancient concept of soul loss, embraced by many civilizations and diverse cultures in North America, Australia, Asia, South America and the shaman tradition as far back as 10,000 years ago. Soul …

The rural or urban setting helped to determine the Masonic rite which grew and prospered in the area, and this is illustrated with the growth of American cities. Jane Jacobs can be related to the Scottish Rite, surprising as the notion seems.
