Three (3) Learning Objectives:

• To demonstrate how to engage youth (grades 6-12) in the prevention planning process through student leadership councils in the school and community domains. Also, how to engage the community and students to be actively involved in the reduction of substance abuse and other adolescent problem behaviors.

• To demonstrate the connection between three prevention models, Communities That Care (CTC), 40 Developmental Assets, and Positive Community Social Norms. Focus will be placed on how the three prevention frameworks work together to support the Social Development Model of preventing substance abuse.

This session will introduce the process and effectiveness of holistic advising. We will discuss meeting the whole student, considering the student’s personal, emotional, cultural, financial, and familial issues before any can become a barrier, and negatively influence their educational success. Student support personnel, advisors, and counselors will take away a plan of action in holistic advising.

Due to increased tendency of children in foster care placements to perform poorly in school and to become involved with the juvenile justice system, there is a dire need for school districts to improve support systems for this vulnerable student group. Unlike ijmāʿ, which means consensus, jamʿ refers to mere collection, gathering or grouping. In other words, if ijmāʿ is grounded in reason, indicates a choice between two opposites, and represents a reified construction, jamʿ, on the contrary, avoids reason, (con) fuses opposites, and survives on ambiguity. Jamʿ neither dialectically integrates opposites, nor post-modernly juxtaposes them as collage. The secret of jamʿ is an epistemology of truth that is never complete, and always mixed with falsehood. The identity and overall well-being of African American girls tends to be influenced, both positively and negatively, by the following factors: mass media, gender roles, and environmental factors. Black Girlhood examines the identity development of African American girls utilizing the relational developmental systems theory framework. Black Girlhood also explores the role that mass media, gender roles, and environmental factors shape how African American girls view themselves, while providing interventions that can allow the reshaping of their identity and improvement in their overall well-being.

In Fall 2013, academic librarians at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) set out to develop their own instructional assessment test bank to evaluate library program effectiveness, improve the student learning experience and determine if library services were effectively developing information literacy skills in learners. Using the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (2000) adopted by ACRL in conjunction with their own information literacy plan, they focused on four critical competency areas: information access points, search tool selection, library website utilization, and classification schemes.

Whitworth University Library developed Library Instruction/ Information Literacy Objectives based on the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education that we have been using for the past decade. Endorsed, in 2008 by the Library & Information Resources Committee, comprised of teaching faculty, these objectives are aimed at specific learning outcomes for the First Year Seminar, writing composition, and discipline specific courses. The progression of information literacy skills reflected in these objectives begins at the basic introductory level, then moves on to basic research skills, and finally to complex discipline specific research skills.
