Of the many means for doing this, one of the more prominent is experiential learning or "planned opportunities for learning outside the classroom" (Hamilton 1980). This article focuses on the potential benefits of service-learning in aging to students, the university, and the community. We first discuss the concept of service-learning, clarify its parameters, and describe the types of projects that best exemplify its unique blend of service and learning. Opportunities for service-learning are examined using examples from the current Intergenerational Service-Learning Project of the National Council on Aging. The complexity of' initiating and gaining acceptance of service-learning in aging projects is explored, with particular attention given to supervisory and curriculum issues. This paper introduces the medium of cultural journalism as an effective means of intensified basic communication training and community involvement. Part one contains a report of a needs assessment and a subsequent pilot project on cultural journalism that was conducted at an Oklahoma high school. The needs assessment also reports on similar projects conducted in and around the Oklahoma region, the attitudes of community members toward such a project, the problems and possibilities associated with such curriculum development, and advice from other proponents of experience based education. This study measured selected changes in high school students as a result of community involvement and participation in order to realize the goal of responsible citizenship. It was designed to ascertain whether students who experienced community service displayed more positive attitudes toward learning than students who had not experienced community service.

Although field study is as ancient as the apprenticeship concept, field study programs have been recreated in recent years as innovative features of many colleges and universities. These programs are as diverse as the institutions that sponsor them. Some are part of cooperative education plans whereby students alternate between a term on campus in regular classwork and a term off-campus in paid employment. Others combine working and studying in the same term. Nearly all have as a primary objective exposing students to a world or perspective beyond the traditional classroom, usually for the purpose of advancing career planning.

Eliot Wigginton, after six weeks of classroom teaching at the Rabun-Gap Nacoochee School in rural north Georgia, was frustrated because he found that his students were not interested in the courses he was prepared to teach. He had graduated from Cornell University in May 1966 with a master's degree and had come to Rabun-Gap to instruct mountain children in English and geography. He realized, fortunately, that if his students were bored it was he who had bored them. He believed that it might be better him to seek another career (Wigginton, 1972).

In November 1965 and again in April 1974 the Census Bureau conducted a nationwide survey of volunteers. The first was funded by the Department of Labor,l and the second by ACTION, a Federal agency established in 1971 to coordinate federally-supported volunteerism, and to operate volunteer programs such as VISTA and the Peace Corps.

The general problem was to assess differences, if any, in selected areas of knowledge, attitudes and behavior among students exposed to a classroom model with students exposed to an experiential (community live-in} model in learning about health problems of the poor. This publication describes over 100 activity-oriented programs in which students learn through a combination of direct experience and associated instruction or reflection. Students are involved in cross-age tutoring, community services, on-the-job work experiences, foreign or domestic travel with an organized group, political campaigns, field trips, art show-productions, movie making, and still photography. A survey was undertaken in the summer of 1969, as part of the Interlude Research Program, among young people who had recently concluded service as Peace Corps Volunteers. The study's objectives were to (a) assess the impact of the Peace Corps interlude on subsequent formal education, (b) obtain respondent opinions on the educational value of the Peace Corps interlude itself, and (c) examine what steps, if any, the formal education system in the United States had taken toward :incorporating such an experience in formal academic programs.
