"The Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 signed into law by President Ford was a landmark piece of legistlation. It provided federal money for communities in block grants, with each local community making its own decisions as to the distrubution of these funds in areas such as housing, parks and community facilities."

Government Regulation And The Cost Of Housing, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Government Regulation And The Cost Of Housing, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
One of the important factors in the rising prices in the housing market is the array of government regulations facing land developers, homebuilders, and financial institutions. Not all government regulation is bad, but the costs are often simply passed along to the consumer, essentially as a "hidden tax." This paper examines the various effects of housing regulation and outlines the procedures for change.

Dying And The Social Responsibility Of Institutions, Roger A. Lohmann
Dying And The Social Responsibility Of Institutions, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Contemporary American society has established a comfortable reliance upon a large network of total and quasi-total institutions for dealing with certain life threatening events and socially disruptive conditions As a consequence these institutions have become primary locales for dying. It is the principal argument of this paper that although a large proportion of all deaths now occur in institutions, they are generally harsh and unsympathetic in their handling of dying, and particularly insensitive to the social and psychological needs of surviving significant others in the period immediately following a death. It is suggested that along with accepting the responsibility to …

Since the Spring of 1974, the Center for Applied Urban Research, with the support of the Economic Development Council of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, has monitored the demographic and economic development of the Omaha area. A major portion of . this development has now moved into areas peripheral to the Omaha City limits. In order to examine this expansion, CAUR has redefined its subareas to monitor more closely the growth trends in both the central and outlying portions of the Omaha …

Identification And Analysis Of Growth Occupations And Entry Level Positions In The Omaha Smsa With Special Attention To Minimal Training, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)
Publications
Manpower planning creates a special need for information that identifies growth occupations or positions and entry level and/or para-professional positions which require minimal training. Estimates and projections of employment by industries and by occupations have been presented and analyzed elsewhere with emphasis upon general trends in such employment in the Omaha SMSA. In order to have a more specific understanding of local developments, additional information as to recent past and current occupational developments is desirable. An attempt to obtain such information was made by means of a survey of employers in the Omaha SMSA in August-September, 1977. The specific objectives …

The Structure Of Employment In The Omaha Smsa: Estimates And Projections By Industry And Occupation, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar), Edward W. Hauswald
Publications
The structure of employment by industry and occupation in the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) 1 has been changing. Trends in various industries and occupations in the Omaha SMSA do not, however, differ ·significantly from national trends. Agricultural employment is increasing in absolute numbers, but represents a declining proportion of the Omaha SMSA labor force, as is true for the nation. Similarly, employment in the manufacturing sector has become less and less important as a proportion of all employment. State and local government and retail trade employers have all had continued long term upward increases in employees, both in …

Productivity, Mortality, And Population Trends Of Wolves In Northeastern Minnesota, L. David Mech
Productivity, Mortality, And Population Trends Of Wolves In Northeastern Minnesota, L. David Mech
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Population parameters, mortality causes, and mechanisms of a population decline were studied in wolves (Canis lupus lycaon) from 1968 to 1976 in the Superior National Forest. The main method was aerial radio-tracking of 129 wolves and their packmates. Due to a decline in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), the wolf population decreased during most of the study. Average annual productivity varied from 1.5 to 3.3 pups per litter, and annual mortality rates from 7 to 65 percent. Malnutrition and intraspecific strife accounted equally for 58 percent of the mortality; human causes accounted for the remainder. As wolf …

Wolf-Pack Buffer Zones As Prey Reservoirs, L. David Mech
Wolf-Pack Buffer Zones As Prey Reservoirs, L. David Mech
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Abstract. In a declining herd, surviving deer inhabited overlapping edges of wolf- pack territories. There, wolves hunted little until desperate, in order to avoid fatal encounters with neighbors. Such encounters reduce wolf numbers and predation pressure and apparently allow surviving deer along territory edges to repopulate the area through dispersal of their prime, less vulnerable offspring into territory cores.
